We were all up early. Winnie packed + ready to go. Dick off by 6:30. Took Winnie to the airport + saw her off a little before 8 o’clock. Came home + called Julia Mullen for an additional $20,000. $15 for the company + the rest to pay off the loans + get appliances for the house on Bonita. Dick home + the phone kept ringing – Mr. Steiner called to say Kent Felix hadn’t shown up for work (his second day – grand) Scotty Haven called to ask me to go down to Juvenile this afternoon + work on macramé. I said I couldn’t. Finally we took the phone off the hook + made love. Shortly afterwards Alice called to invite me over to Lucille’s for a swim. Just what I felt I needed + left when Dick did. Nice time at the pool + then went to the Landmark where I lost some money.
A fairly stupid day. Caught up diary Called the covered wagon re Bill no one there who knew or had heard anything. Paid American Express Co. $155. Sent money to Jim Brown for the garage door. Called Charles Banks to wake him. Went to the bank + deposited Dick’s paycheck + then on down to the Shop for interviews. We set up a card table behind the shelves + it was quite adequate. Kathy Freeman the first to show and we both liked her. Wants to work in a florist. No work available there. Willie Henry came in again with Larry Dehlin. Vicky Hall never [crossed out letters] showed + neither did Jackie Woods or Mary Miller. A frustrating + fruitless morning. Came home at 2. Called Charles Banks – nothing with Mrs. Johnson. Played spite and malice with Winnie + had a good time. She’d finished the refrigerator + was in a lovely mood I think she’s happy to be going home. We called Mather with flight time etc. I paid American express + the door on Lookout Mt. Russell called this am to ask a question about the deed + said they wanted to come out again in September. Ho Ho Called Dick to tell him + he just laughed a little hysterically Dick not home til about 7 – Waited a while for a call + then we went to the Landmark for dinner + had a very good time. Back home by 10:30 + all three to bed – Alarm set for 5:30 am.
Kent Felix got the job with Steiner – Whee.
Annabel called fairly early + I’d forgotten the Guild meeting. Bill + Dale + Jack over at 7 + took off for Des Vanion Lane D’Or I took Jack’s sunglasses over later when Joyce brought them by. I made a meatloaf + cleaned up dishes etc. Dick home at 8:40 – had been going to come back earlier to make love but Winnie now up + it was too late. He started with the complaints of “the constant parade” – Oh Hell. I called Dorothy Beagle to get Kent Felix’s name. Called Kent + asked him about the job with Steiner. He sounded enthusiastic so I gave him Steiner’s number. Called Steiner first to prepare him. Winnie made reservations for flight home Weds. at 8:02 am. She worked on cleaning up the refrigerator and I futzed about the house Did laundry etc. We played 2 games of spite and malice in between which was fun. I took her to the Guild meeting. Pretty dreary. Another lady called this A.M. with the suggestion the kids operate a melon stand – (she’d seen one in Pasadena) evidently my message on Eddie Hall’s show didn’t quite cut it. All they needed were melons, ice cream, chairs + tables etc. Half a melon (of any kind) a la’mode for 50¢. How lovely. After meeting went to Western Union. Money was there. Back to office. Bill Rehn out so waited for Charlie Banks who was late himself. He’s desperate now too. His girl friend is pregnant. Oh Christ. Gave him John Terry’s name + then thought of Lubeitha Johnson + gave him her number. He called + has an appt tomorrow am Bill in (may have sold 2 pools) + will go to the papers re Charles tomorrow. Stopped at Alice’s, bought groceries + came home. Put meatlaof in oven at 6:45. Dick called to say he’d be home in 15 min. Came back in over an hr. + smashed. Called me Laura which made me feel shitty – Dumb, unhappy evening. Played cards with Winnie for a while – Called Mary.
Most excruciating hangover in a long long time. I am too old to have a civilized dinner. Stick to one form of alcohol. Dick left at 9:30 to go pick up another refrigerator (which I do not want but let that pass.) At about 2:30 I called Joyce + could have killed her when she said that Dick was “in good shape” when he left their house. “He refused a drink for almost an hour + then I just made one + put it in front of him. Maybe I shouldn’t have.” I told her no she shouldn’t + I wouldn’t thank her for it. He + Jack came staggering back around three o’clock. Unloaded the refrigerator. I’d hidden the booze but when it became evident they were just going to go out to a bar I made them each a drink. Dick started picking (mildly but picking) on Winnie. Thank God Marlene invited her to the movies this evening. I think she’s had a thin time (not that we could have done things much better under the circumstances) Last night Dick told Stephanie that Winnie’s father was a millionaire which was awkward enough – then he told Winnie that Stephanie resented her which she hadn’t felt but which put the cap on her evening. Oh shit. Marlene came for Winnie about 5. Dick + I went to J + J’s at 5:30. Bill Muir came over + we had a very good rib dinner. I made a list of their plans for tomorrow + Dick + I left at 8:30 + came home + went to bed. The girls still out. There’s so much to get accomplished that Dick just cannot afford to get drunk. He does so damn well when he doesn’t.
Went out early. Went to see Mr. Steiner at the cleaner’s + got more information on the jobs available (He’s got two! – looking for an 18 yr old boy right away) Went by the library but Mrs. Stringfellow is still out sick. Got groceries + had a small argument on “todays young people” with the sourold change lady. Home Called Cotton about books for graduation + asked her to please ask her Mother to get me the scholarship info for Colby Jr. for Debbie Miranda. Called Alice, Annabel, Mrs. Freeman and 6 kids for interviews + follow ups. Called B. Dalton’s + according to Madeline her Mother had called the shop. Went there with Winnie + ordered an Atlas, a roget’s thesaurus and a revised 2nd edition of Reader’s Encyclopedia. (Ordered 3 others for gifts) Had them sent to Cotton – Gave Winnie 7 dollars + took off. Wound up in the Land Mark where I won $125.00. Watch stopped. Must get new one + was late to get Winnie Home, changed + took her over to Stephanie’s to take them both to Macayo Vegas for dinner Gave Winnie a $20 to cover it – they had passes to “Patten” Came home + changed. We got to Shirley’s about 7:45. Dick had had a good day. $200 worth of sales at the shop. Alot of customers appeased, some money collected and 1 pool sold with strong possibility of a 2nd George + Pat Garret there + Bill Muir came soon after. Drinks first then wine with dinner and finally liqueurs before going back to plain drinks. The Galliano was my last really crystal clear memory. Bill + Dick went to pick up Steph + Winnie. Brought them back to rivera. George quietly passed out. talks of life + death – Happy kid sounds from the girls – home at 2:30.
A sort of depressing day. Didn’t get a lot done. Winnie up late. Wendy over at 11. Ironed a dress + robe. Left at eleven + took Winnie to Stephanie Freeman’s. I really liked Mrs. Mariantha Freeman. Funny lady. Took the girls to the Beef and Bottle for lunch. Liked Stephanie They’re going to see Patton tomorrow night. Went over to the shop. Talked with Dick. We’ve got a balance of $1800.00 in the business. Alot of money out but not enough. We have got to sell some pools and I just don’t see how. Annabel, Alice + John + Mary Anne Miller came by en masse. I gave Annabel some names to call. Introduced Alice to Shirley. Bill Rehn called + gave Charles Banks an appt. for Monday. After they left I talked with Shirley a little. We’ve got to start making money. She thinks things are going alot better since Dick has taken over. We called the Nevada Bank of Commerce – Harold Hansen – still on vacation. Called Del Wade who has a Doughboy pool in his backyard!! Davies’ pool has taken 4 weeks to dig. It’s no wonder that some of the people are screaming – went to the Safeway + bought stuff for Veal Parmiagian. Had a stomachache – undoubtedly nerves. We ate at 7. Dick made alot of calls. Can pick up some money tomorrow. Has 1 or 2 people who won’t pay + he’s going to take them to court. I called Leon about 9 and he turned down the 5 days for Tom Palmer because it was no part at all + Tom told him that. I’m so glad. And think it was beautiful of Leon to turn down some money for a better part. Went to bed still feeling achey but somehow less depressed.
A very full day. We were up at 5:30 + Dick was off by 6. I caught up diary, changed our bed. Did a load of laundry + washed my hair. Made up to look really nice. Winnie up at 8. Dick called from office + I went over to the job on Martingale to tell Jack + Bill Muir to go start up a pool someplace else. Winnie + I went to the Blvd for “Breakfast at the Blvd.” Sat with Barbara Nielson + two children + Elaine + Alice Turner. Elaine said she’d like the prospectus on Daddy’s book. Winnie missed coming from Furtherst away which was too bad. Eddie Hall said I could be on his show at 2:30 Went to B.Dalton + spoke with Rita Croxton – new asst. mgr. who is a good friend of Mr. Coombs + told her about John Carpenter’s back ground. She’s going to talk to Coombs before he ruins them. Elaine + I are having lunch with Mary Deane on Thursday of next week at noon. Took stuff to laundry + came home. Called Dick. Paid mortgage + subscription for TV guide. Made a couple of calls. Went to W.O.W. + won $5.00. Mailed letters. Went to bank + thence to Blvd. Gave Elaine the prospectus + had lunch. Was on Eddie Hall’s Show almost 20 minutes and he really gave a good pitch. We went downtown then got licenses for three dogs + went to Western Union – Money – not in yet Back to the office. Picked up the painting which looks beautiful. Office busy + I felt very extra + as though I was interrupting. (Got this mainly form Geo. Jr. + Dick.) Later was told he’d asked for a higher commission + been refused Pat + George Garret taking the car – they gave me a name of one of Georgia’s friends who’s Winnie’s age. Stephanie Truman We came home after shopping + I called her. Am going to take the girls to lunch tomorrow. Fixed Chinese dinner. Mr. Steiner of the cleaners called + is looking for a girl full time – through the year – Dick home at 7:20 After long + busy day. Mrs. Johnson never called. He’s got Joe digging for him now. Leon called + there’s a possiblility of a 5 day job coming up? I’d really like that because the salary should be big + its another new show. He won’t know until tomorrow. We went to bed about 9:30 or 10 but watched TV a bit –
None too easy getting up. Dick had been on the phone at 6 and everyone doing what they should do. He left the house about 10:15 with Jessie to pick up the Carmen Ghia. Mardi packed. We called Mary + talked with Abby to say they were coming. Finally got them all packed + we went to the bank in two cars. I cashed a check + gave them $50 to help on their trip and Disneyland. Waved goodbye – They were alot of fun – and Winnie + I went grocery shopping. [crossed out letter] Had lunch at the Safeway + came home. Made a few calls. Went down to the shop. Took Leon’s painting and ordered a frame. Ready tomorrow. Bought some standard 8×10 frames + hung his picture in Dick’s office. Charles Banks + Bill Rehn got together + they’ll be meeting again tomorrow. Mr. Goldsworthy in + evidently he can use a few girls. Said I’d send them along. I went to Dwyers to pick up the Kalichi payment (Hah!) and the Gunite payment. They’re delighted with the job which is very nice. Pat + George Garrett took the Cadillac to lunch + then took it home. They want it. A few problems so it’s not 100% definite but it looks beautiful! Another $200.00 a month less. Cross fingers. Ritchie came in + talked to Dick. He wants to go to work for John Carpenter at a guaranteed $200 a week selling pool sweeps + chlorinators. I think it got to me even more than Dick. Dick just said “it’s up to you, Ritchie – We’ve got a place for you here -” But I felt + said to Dick + Bill Rehn that if Ritchie goes to work for John – there is no coming back to us. Dick talked to Paul Young about the car. Paul is desperate but in a way we’re getting a little desperate too. Dick Winnie + I came home at 7:00 – Winnie called Mather who sounded fine. We had a good dinner + went to bed very soon after.
Dick left early. I went by the Dwyers to pick up the excavation payment. Pleasant chat with Mrs. Dwyer. On to the office. Driving the little car. Annabel already at our office. The last day. We had 5 kids come in. Debbie Miranda seems like a likely prospect for Colby Jr. College. Said I’d write + find out about scholarships. Will also call Mrs. Stringfellow about her. Donald Ray Smith came with his Mother – sent him to the Fremont + a kid named John McCoy I referred to Hoffmeister. Michael Zeck + Frank Adams were interviewed by Annabel. We moved our stuff out + Annabel went to a hair appt. Bill Carlos came to the store + I was really terribly depressing. Had a sandwich with Bill Rehn – he’s going to see Charles Banks at 2 tomorrow. Went to the bank + cashed Newcomb’s check sent $400 to Leuse. Paid insurance bill. Went to Cleaners + stopped by library to see Mrs. Stringfellow who was out sick. Turned around + came back to store. No time to get home Called the house + suggested the kids go out for dinner. The company meeting I think was successful. The only trouble was the diggers weren’t there + they’ve been causing most of the trouble. But I do think alot got ironed out. A bit too much beer for yours truly. Went afterwards with George Jr + Dick to Tom Corcoran’s. Had another beer but I doubt if Tom noticed. We (Dick + I) had dinner at the Cockatoo. Ran into Timmy Philips + an inspector named Orland something. Home at 10 + drunk – Mardi + Winnie up. Jessie sacked out I stayed up with the girls for a bit they had a really good time at the Grand Canyon. Jess + Mardi leave tomorrow.
I stayed around the house all day. We called Shirley + told her the decision about Murray. She seemed to feel it was reasonable. Dick went to see a Mr. Chisholm about pools in a tract (learned from Marlene later that they had a bad record of paying.) The girls did grocery shopping for me and I fixed another batch of meat balls for dinner. I read + took a nap. A Mr. Corcoran called + has 2 pools for Dick but wants to see him. Dick raised Marlene to $2.00 an hour. He also told Richie + George Jr. that they can draw $100.00 a week against commission. I’m not too sure how I feel about that. I want Dick to run this business and I don’t like him talking over company policy with the kids. Blah, Blah, Blah. Jack + Joyce arrived at 5:30. Jack pretty smashed + Joyce pretty annoyed. She’d gone to the Valley bar + played the machine there + won $50.00. I’m afraid maybe they are in trouble with their marriage + I hate to see it. Repeat Blah Blah Blah and it’s none of my business. Dick not here til after 6. Jessie put red contact paper stars on “the Intrepid Traveler” + it looks very dashing. She was in rare form this afternoon + evening. Outlined for the gathering various methods of selling pools – the rich relative gambit the best. Also a hysterical tale of going to a March + getting out at the Rush Hour in Columbus. She’s a very funny girl. We played a little poker after dinner. Bed about 10 o’clock. We gave the girls $70 for their trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. Wendy brought over a sleeping bag for Winnie + gave them a big tarp to put in the ground. Winnie is worried about Mather. I wonder if she’s right. I set up about 7 interviews for Tuesday.
Dick off early – I tried to send a telegram to Susan Enelow for hours couldn’t do it as Western Union was busy. Finally got them at 9:30. Wrote Sue a birthday card with a $10 check. Jimmy Judge over + I asked him for dinner. I went to the Hacienda to pick up some keno tickets. Played 21 + lost – went to Safeway + got groceries. Home + fixed meatballs + garlic bread. Paid Vet’s bill. Took the girls to Circus Circus. Were there about 3 hours. Lost there too. Our keno ticket never won so much as a nickel Played all afternoon. Home. Called Mary + asked her to send Jessie’s letter on. Heard about Elizabeth’s funeral which sounded sad. Dear Elizabeth + Dear Henry. We had dinner out in the den (Jessie + Mardi’s bedroom) Jimmy in rare form + the two older girls were captivated. Not too certain how Winnie felt. Dick went to bed pretty soon after dinner. Jimmy played 21 with the ladies. Winnie went to bed pretty soon after Dick + the four of us stayed on + played til 11:30 Jessie very lucky. Funny evening. Jimmy had 3 or 4 drinks which seemed a sort of record for him. I think he was captivated in turn.
George Jr. over + told Dick that Murray has been seeing Bill Palmer every week. Dick is going to get rid of Murray + I think he’s right.
Dick very nice in A.M. (6 or so) the 4 am beef right out of his head. Guess he was asleep. Woke next at 8:45 when Jess was at the door + ready to go. Dick was in the John + had overslept too. He left immediately – Jess, Mardi + Winnie left with Newman at 9. Called from Boulder City at 9:45 – they had to pick him up this afternoon as the place is closed. Carol Whitmoyer said the dog is about 2 years old. I wrote out a command invitation to the Company meeting at the store on July 7th and right after Wendy came I left in the Carmen Ghia to meet Bill Rehn – Got there at 10:40. Talked with Bill. Xeroxed invitations to be given out with pay checks. We discussed Direct mailing project. Then went over the financial statement with Shirley Not too good. But them again, not as bad as it could have been. Dick + I went to the Golden Nugget for lunch + them over to Nevada national for lunch where we talked with Harold Hanson. Gave him our statement and my most recent one ($650,000 – market value). We may have done some business. He’s away for 3 days in early next week but will call on his return re a dealership. Back to the store briefly. Then to Bank of Nevada where I deposited check from Family Affair. Mailed commission to Leon + garbage bill. Went to Bank of Las Vegas to deposit $200 + chatted with Ralph Sheer – discovered George Jr. had taken all the papers away with him last night after trying to sell a pool to Ralph’s roommate. Called the office Safeway + shopped – home. Girls locked out with a very groggy Newman. Had loved Boulder Dam – I wrote Rich Ware. Jess wanted to try selling pools – I thought fine but Dick said No. We had barbecued hamburgers, corn on cob outside. Called Mary – Sue’s birthday tomorrow Dick not feeling well. Funny evening though. Paul Prokag [?] called. Wanted to bring film over + I said no. Got very on the defensive (I did.) Girls out for a ride down strip. Bed early.
Up at 6:15 – made sweet rolls Dick up pretty painfully Jack over + I asked him about John Carpenter – He’d never gone near Highlander’s pool. But he’s working for Paradise Pools now + they’d called the office about Poolbrite equipment Oh Hell. They left (Dick + Jack) at 7:00) I did dishes + futzed about. Called Dorothy Beagle about Bill Brown + her son has a group who’s looking for a guitarist. I called Juvenile + spoke with Donetta Webb, Donald Jones + Mr. Crawford all of whom promised to get one of their kids to an interview on Tuesday. I called Penney’s about Charlie Banks + Mr. Dwiggens is away. His secretary, Mrs. Dougherty is handling the interviews. Dick home + we made love. Later I called Mrs. Dougherty + talked with her about Charles. She said she’d see him + asked if I could get him there at 3:00. I said I’d try + called his home. Got his sister who said she’d tell him. I left for Dave’s office at 11:40. Got there at noon plus. He notarized the Alaria quit claim deed and we talked about the situation. If John does make trouble we can make trouble. I talked with Mary about jobs for kids + she said she’d keep an eye out. She can use a gardener once a week. I went to meet Dick at Duffy’s at 1:30. He + Murray there + had been since 1 o’clock. Paul not there + the guy they were supposed to meet they didn’t know. Finally got straightened out – a Fred Doyle who’d eaten + was about to go home – Paul showed about 2:15 having over slept! liked Doyle. I left + went to the mint where after gambling all afternoon I came out $4.00 ahead. This after going way down. Went to office for meeting. Dick had forgotten to tell Shirley + Murray had to take his daughter to the hospital. Talked with Bill Rehn about advertising. Went home + fed the dogs. letter from Rae O’Dell with chart. More adoption papers. We went to Cecil’s palace – Came home + Dick cued me through my lines over + over. Talked with Charlie Banks + he’s going to see Mrs. Dougherty at 11 tomorrow. I’d called her + changed the appt. Winnie called + is arriving on July 2nd. Alot to get done..
All slept in a bit – Dick off in a huff (?) without vitamin at 7. Daddy up at 9:00. I wrote diary, paid phone bill. Dorothy Beagle called + I said I’d stop by this afternoon. I called the adoption people + said we were still interested – Our case worker Janet Owens is now Janet Bubnis – she got married. Wendy came over for her check + said goodbye to Daddy. I called Alice Turner + spoke with Clesse. Got their son-in-laws name + had Daddy sign his book for him. While Daddy packed I made some calls – tried to get Mrs. Bradley at probation couldn’t get her. Called Joni Marie – not working. Called Mike McShea + spoke with his Father who’s got him going to school for programmed learning which sounds good. Daddy wanted to get a couple of bottles for Dick so we went to the store + got vodka bourbon and some gin for Daddy’s trip to Denver (“Uncle Alston is a little strict. Maybe strict isn’t the word so much as parsimonious!”) Came home + Druscilla called from the office – Scott back – London + England a fiasco. Drue + M.J. had sent flowers hoping I’d hate them as they were sick of getting them!! Funny. She said hello to Daddy. I fixed sandwiches for lunch + a final martini for Daddy. Dick back at 2 Winnie called! To wish me Happy Birthday a month late + to ask me how to fix steak!!! She leaves for San Antonio tomorrow + I suggested she might come in for a few days after. We went to the airport + put Daddy on his plane. The first unhappy moment of his whole visit. Just hated to say goodbye to him. Dick off to the office + I went to Dorothy Beagles – got a whole batch of new applications + discovered a new probation officer – George Bubnis!!! If that’s Janet’s husband it will help a great deal. Pleasant time with Dorothy – home – called J + J. made calls for interviews. Early bed – Ed Kulick over + Dick out of bed + into the vodka. I got a little frosty.
Left Vegas at 9:30 – in alot of confusion. Dick left his glasses. Jimmy Judge drove us to airport. Had [crossed out word] breakfast on plane – snowstorm in Chicago – 2 1/2 hours circling 2 1/2 hours on the ground for repairs – 11 1/2 hrs in plane. Got to Boston 10:40 instead of 6:30. Mather + Winnie waiting – took wrong turn + drove to Salem, Mass. Snowing. “There’s never any snow on the roads in New Hampshire” I’d said. Hah! Got to New London 3: am. Bed at 3:30. Mather + Winnie over at Barn View.
