Up very early. Called Irene who’s off to L.A. today with the children. Told her to go to Pirates of the Caribbean when they go to Disneyland. Dick told Timmy to stay over + leave with me last night which I was a little annoyed at as I have alot to do. I went to the bank in the early morning + deposited some money from my N.Y. Acct. Came back to the house. Timmy’s friend didn’ t call. At noon he called him + made a date for 2:30. We went to Panorama to “feed the monster” – + then to the Castaways for lunch + to cash a check. Timmy liked it as it appealed to him by being comparatively quiet. He won a jackpot in the “Double Jackpot” period + that made his day. I played a little keno + won a little + lost a little. Absolutely even. I left Timmy at Sasha’s + went over to the house. Dick there. He’ in a [crossed out word] rotten mood lately + so am I because of it. I left in tears. Went to the East Charleston Safeway and Elliott gave me a lovely leg of lamb – boned it et al. Went to pick up Timmy + met Sasha + Ida who seem very pleasant. In the midst of fixing up their house. 3 huge tanks of lovely tropical fish. They invited Timmy to dinner tomorrow night + then to see the show at the Dunes. Will bring him home. Went back to the house + fixed the lamb + potatos + made eggplant casserole. Good dinner really. Bed almost immediately after. I tried George Spicer but won’t be in til late so said I’d call in the morning.
Dick up + off to Jack + Joyce’s about 6:30. In exchange for stuccoing there Jack’s helping with the electricity. I couldn’t sleep so stayed up + worked on puzzle. A woman called mid-morning. Somebody Dick had asked to call about doing housework. Had seen her husband in Frank’s yesterday. I was annoyed as he could have told me. Told the woman he must have been drunk + we’d talk it over + let her know. George called. Dick not at the house. By that time he should have been. Told him he was at J + J’s. Getting smashed all over again. I called Daddy to wish him Happy Father’s Day. Nice chat – Timmy + I went to Panorama. did some shopping + fed the Machine. Then to Lums for lunch but I couldn’t find it so we went to Denny’s on the strip + then over to the Sahara where we spent the afternoon playing Keno + Timmy played the slots. I never won but never lost anything beside the price of the game. So it was a pleasant + inexpensive afternoon. Timmy was up about $5 when we left at 4:45!! (3 1/2 hours.) Dick in bed when we got home. Timmy fixed a pork curry + I did the cutting + chopping side of things. The he went out on the patio + read + I vacuumed + swept the house. Washed the kitchen floor + cleaned the bathroom. Woke Dick about 8:00. High wild wind. Sort of exciting. After very good dinner we watched a silly new show called “Hee Haw” + then Mission Impossible. I went to bed. Couldn’t keep my eyes open. Dick told strange tale of a Mexican hitting him at the Valley Bar. Don’t know if it’s true or not. Timmy’s friend Sasha called this eve + we’re going over in the morning.
Up about 8 or so. We called Mother Michels + Cassie about the show. Dick off to the house. They were supposed to put up the sheetrock today. (they didn’t.) Timmy + I played the tapes, worked on puzzle. Went to Safeway + bought pork loin + veggies. Drove over to the house to give a little moral support but Dick not there. Sparks there texturing the stucco. We drove over to the international to look at it and then went to the mall. Had lunch in the cafeteria + browsed a bit. Came home + I set up the pork + prepared a zucchini casserole. Put it in at 4:30 + lay down for a nap. Dick had gone to Jack + Joyces so was smashed + never got back to the house. He slept til about 8:15 Woke him + we all watched the show. Leon called right before. I had wanted to keep the phone off the hook (one-half hour) but Dick said NO. I was really angry but nobody called – so least said soonest mended. We had a good dinner + then watched TV. N.Y.P.D. We were all drowsing in our seats when a really rotten movie came on with Hedy Lamar + Jane Powell. So awful we revived + watched it through. Bed about midnight. Dick “going to give up smoking.”
Up very early. Wrote a letter for Dick about responsibility for a deck which has contracted + cracked – or something. After he left I called Jimmy. Spoke first with Hilary who asked if I’d been up all night + then Jimmy who asked the same! Hard to change the old image I guess. I called Leon + I guess I’ll stay with him. I did a large load of laundry + called Newcomb + Anne about the show tomorrow. Called Waller Lumber for Dick + Don’s Overhead doors. We listened to more of Timmy’s tapes Eva over early with cookies + then later with a map of the route to Mt. Charleston. But was in a rush to get off. Timmy + I went to Panorama Market “to feed the Monster” – Thence to Wonder World where we played a few more machines + then home. We started the puzzle. Difficult. Dick back about 4:30 or so. We all took short nap. Went to the El Cortez for dinner. Very good lobster – drinks 50¢ + dinner bill came to $9.58! I won $130.00 at Keno and Dick won $280.00 but before the evening was out we’d lost it all back. However no checks cashed. We should have left about 3 hours before we did but Dick wanted to stay. Home at 2:30. Timmy weary. Bed at 2:45 I called Lido to say I was on tomorrow night. (not at 2:45 but earlier.)
Dick off at 5:30. I slept in – til almost 8:00. Wrote cards to Mrs. Davis, Aunt Hope, Lyle, Celeste, Mother Michels, The Erdmans, Remsens, + Joan Korda about the My 3 sons Sat. night. Called Leon who wants me to take out another ad. Timmy up about 9:30. Most of the morning spent listening to his cassettes. I think he’s got a very good possibility of doing something with them. A weekly program – the poet’s corner. If it did sell – a record might be the outcome. Nice to talk about poetry etc. for a change. I made a chocolate pie for Dick. We went shopping at Panorama fed the machines- + then went over to Vegas Village where we bought a card table. It will come in handy. Back to the house. Leon called + told me to call Virginia Martindale. I did + have a job – one day – on My 3 sons – This next Thursday. We took naps + then Timmy fixed his chicken dish while I fixed salad etc. Dick home + he took a nap. Told me when he got up he was happy I’d gotten a job that made me happy. Walt + Eva Jenkins came over at 6 o’clock. We had drinks for an hour + then Dinner which was a great success. Dick was delightful + I think everyone had a good time. Then Walt left for his school meeting and we all adjourned to the living room to watch TV. Very pleasant evening. Bed a bit after eleven.
Early up. Finished setting pattern in sock. Paid electric bill. Called Lester + asked for more money. Not earning anything makes it difficult. Mr. Windham came + took the couch around 9:30. Went to the Florist + had flowers sent to the Dodges with card “The First 50 years is the hardest.” Paid our bill there + went to Panorama to the terrible Slot machine. Then went to the Hacienda to cash a New York check. Gave them my change of info + told them I’d gotten married. The man asked if I’d married Newcomb Cleveland. I laughed + said No he’s my brother to which the man replied grimly – “we’re looking for him.” I’d forgotten the whole episode of course. I gambled there for a while without any luck + then came home + cleaned up the house. Met Timmy at 4:01. Took him along the Strip + then we went into the mint + played a little Keno. Came back via Panorama + Timmy played the dime slot machine + won $3. We bought filet mignon + gourds. I called Dick who’d said he was coming home at 6 but instead had been home since 4. Not too happy as nobody had showed at the house. We fixed a nice meal – had several drinks before. After dinner we drove along the strip to look at the lights + then went + looked at the house. Then we went to the Fremont where none of us did well. Home at 1:00 – Bed at 1:30. Dick did win about $30
Hard to get up at 5:30. Dick pushing. I resisting. Said I’d take a cab to the airport. He was understandably irked + stormed out of the house to get some doughnuts. I was ready by the time he came back + he apologized which was awfully nice as it was mostly my fault. He took me to the airport where I had coffee + cottage cheese for breakfast!!! Plane arrived at 8:45. I got a mustang from Avis after a few problems. Drove to Neil Sloane’s where George gave me a great hair cut. He may buy his own place in the Valley. Couldn’t start car. Asked help. Kindly passerby suggested I put it in neutral. Started car. Went to 9000 Sunset to bank. Closed out savings acct. Took $500 in cash + put $574 in checking. Closed out old 6th + Alvarado acct + deposited that too. Went upstairs + saw Tony Melia who said I looked great. He laughed about my 3rd D.W.I. He’s going to arrange for more insurance on my house. It won’t cost much and he’ll deduct it from the return on my automobile insurance. Gave me an addressed envelope to send back the policy. Got to Leon’s at 12:15. Ed Brennan, his little girl Linda + Jim O’Hara there. Leon so pleased to see me. Took me to Frascati’s for lunch. We talked about working and I told him I’d like 5 or 6 good jobs in a year if I could get them. That it was all right with Dick. I also told him that if I had a baby I’d be very happy. We went to his apartment where he gave me a bar case for Dick and a cake and some cabbage soup to give Timmy. And then he gave me a shawl that has been in his family for 200 years. “From the Heart.” Dear Leon. Took him back to the office. Bob Gravitch there. He’s gotten married to someone he met one evening + is bitterly unhappy. We didn’t talk about it. Saw Dorothy. Used Leon’s phone to call tax collector. Big mess. Leon gave me the legal description of property in Palm Springs. I went to house. Paul not there. He’d taken down my portrait + put it in closet upstairs. It’s my house + I felt both hurt + angry. My feeling was he’d had enough notice to put it back up. Left nasty note to that effect. Got scrapbooks + warm clothes. My mail not out either. Went to Timmy’s + called tax collector again. The Title Co. didn’t pay my 1st installment of taxes due Dec. 8th until March 25th!! Called Beth Mortimer who was furious with them + said she’d give them hell. Had lovely visit with Timmy. Took a no-doz after dinner with coffee. Paul came by with my mail as I was leaving + said my portrait dominated him. Was glad he’d come. Turned in car, bought a present for Dick. Timmy had lent me a suit case for my scrapbooks. Had drink on plane. In at 10:45. Dick met me. We went to Valley Bar. Home + sat up + talked + drank til 2 am!
Got my period this a.m. If I’d waited a day I could have forgotten the stupid test. Blah Blah. Was up at 6 – the dogs very noisy. Washed our bedding + the machine started buzzing. Never realized how many noises there are – kept wondering how Sue could sleep. I wrote Leon + sent him a check for $4,000. I wrote Mary + Gen, Betty Nichols + Marian Towne to pave the way for our visit to New London. Then I wrote Daddy. I started on the Quick Weight Loss diet today + stuck to it religiously – Sue up about 11 o’clock. We went shopping and I took her to Decatur Center, Charleston Heights + Vegas Village. Came home + gave her the keys to the car. Dick here then gone again. Timmy called in the a.m. + it was good to talk to him. He has a chance to get a tape recorder from Bruce Barker at a huge discount + I told him I thought he should. In the afternoon I read some of a book called La Belle Otero a grand figure of “La Belle Epoque.” Sue out with the car. She called about 4 + had had trouble with the car – the points went out. She’d run into 2 boys from L.A. One of whom used to work at Judy’s. Talk about luck for all considered. A huge Easter Lily arrived from Newcomb + Anne How nice. I napped for a while – til six. Fixed bitke for Dick. I had lobster meat. A little cold roast beef + some cottage cheese. Sue did not eat. She went out with her friends who seemed like nice boys around 8:30. Dick + I watched “Seven Days In May” on TV. I was really exhausted by the time we went to bed at 11. Hadn’t had a drink to create the illusion of not being tired. However was pleased with myself. Sue took the record player out with her.
Dick off to court. Once more put off going for the car as I felt poorly. Hangover (not that we drank a great deal)? or Morning sickness? or not enough sleep? Think it’s the 1st + 3rd I read “World of Profit” – utterly engrossing. Dick home at 10:30 court postponed til afternoon. We had breakfast at a Denny’s and then got the car. Went to Vegas Village + bought groceries and hose + sprinkler. Dick bought me some shirts and I got some little towels to make into a bureau scarf for Sue’s room. Phil came over with Dick’s truck and had a couple of beers. He’s an awfully nice guy. Dick back to court + I started work on the office + Sue’s room. Hung pictures + did alot of cleaning Swept Patio etc. Dick home at 4:30. After losing two days over this stupid court thing it had been settled in the judges chambers. He took me to the MVD and I applied for a license + then promptly flunked the eye test. I should have worn my contacts. I knew my glasses were bad but not how bad. Felt awful about it. We had an ice cream + came home. I fixed Roast beef + gravy and rolls + artichokes for dinner Had only two drinks all evening + we went to bed at ten o’clock. Was so exhausted. Dear note from Timmy. Mary had called him the other morning at 7 am to tell him about Les’ father. I’ve lost Annie’s itinerary + can’t find it anywhere.
Busy Day – Up at 8:30 – Bank at 10:00 – arranged for telegraph transfer of money to Vegas. Went to Motor Vehicle dept. on Cole St. Got license [crossed out letters] name + address changed + paid for 1969 registration – $43!! which seemed excessive. Went to Burlington Avenue + picked up turtle, [crossed out words] Bill Downey’s “L.A.”, my tiffany lamp and old vase. Went down into cellar + rescued “Tallahassee”. The Rubys have the most incredible amount of stuff. Never realized those rooms could seem tiny! But in the clutter they assuredly do. My clutter seems like nothing now. Brief glimpse of Jim Parker. Went to Miller’s stationary + bought some note paper and this diary – Came home + caught it up. Harry finished the upstairs shelves today. Starts in the living room tomorrow. I tried to clean the tree stains on rug + Leon’s leather chair without much success on either alas. Paid a few bills + sent in Players’ Guide entry. Spoke with Leon + it looks all right for tomorrow. Dick called at 4:15 + money hadn’t arrived. Called bank + it had gone out. Called him back. He checked with his bank who’d made a mistake. It had been sitting there since one o’clock. Mary called + sounded distracted + tight + reminiscent of old unhappier days. Wanted to meet me at Timmy’s for the turtle. Les couldn’t have the privilege of marrying her. Blah Blah Blah. She called back later. Margie had called Les up + told him to come back “Mom needs you.” So the three of them will be there. Also what’s really disturbing – she’d called Newcomb + Daddy. Oh Hell – Poor Newcomb must think California is sliding into the ocean! Spoke with Iverson + cancelled Friday. Spoke with Mona who’s going to stay here over the weekend. Went to Timmy’s with Humbug + Barkis. Stopped for Brandy + a bottle of bourbon for him. We had pleasant evening. Watched “Bunny Lake is Missing.” Home by 11:30 – Called Leon. Still not definite about tomorrow night. It’s 12 now – I’ve put in a wakeup call for 8:00 + am off to bed.
Tallulah died early this a.m. –
Day of hanging around. No news about work. Check came from Daddy. Went shopping for wrapping paper + Christmas favors for Timmy, Rich, Les, Eve + Mary. Went to post office + bought stamps. Mailed all the checks out to the children. Went to lamp place. Still not ready. Home + fixed mashed potatos etc. for dinner. Spoke with Dick. Apologized for last night’s tirade about driving. Blah Blah. Nice talk. Mary + Les came at 7 – Eve + Rich shortly after. Timmy by cab as car had given out. Nice evening. Food good. Mary very amusing. She + Les took Timmy home. Called Mona at home + things are very bad. Told her I’d sent $500 from the Rita Fund tomorrow. We talked nearly an hour. I drank madeira as we talked. Scotty called then at midnight + we talked another hour. Told him he could stay here if he came out. Bed at 1:30 –
Picked up pictures at Film Fan Foto.
Worked on cards – Got call for commercial – coca cola at Century City – at 5 – Bathed, dressed, made up etc. “demure prissy, New England D.A.R. – went + saw Margaret Wheeler, Ann Seymour + Jean Arnold. I + Margaret + nice English girl held over 2 of the 3” would get it. Felt they were both righter. Came home + called Dick (7 o’clock) Learned I’d called him a 2nd time last night. Went to Timmy’s for dinner. Nice Evening though Timmy bleak about Christmas. Coca Cola working Thurs. or Fri. So – supposedly is “Anderson + Co.” – ???
Up + downstairs by 7 am. Humbug hacking away. Paid bills – Bonestells, Westwood VW, + Hayes. Returned contracts 20th. Wrote S.A.G. about change of address called aftra, Equity, Variety, Automobile Club + John L. Roberts about new lens. Spoke with Leon, Timmy + Pet Academy who said they’d feed Humbug his cough medicine. Gathered more Eucalyptus pods + branches. Took long nap around one o’clock. Took Hummy at four to Pet Academy. His delight at seeing Dick Showalter – great testimonial. Dick gave me a Hypo to feed the charcoal. Bought pan for tree + more gold spray. Home + sprayed new string + branches. Called Dick who may not come til Saturday. Pray for good pool weather. Leon called. They want me back for Anderson + Co. new scenes written in. Good news. Tried to give Hummy charcoal. complete frustration + frazzled nerves. Took both dogs to Timmy’s. Pleasant evening. Although another showdown with Humbug but got a full teaspoon down between us. Home at 11:30. Put out garbage + so to bed.
Up at 5 – Moved furniture, paid bills – John L. Roberts, Leslie Spicer (!) sent Xmas cash to telephone Secretaries, change of address to Aftra + Sag. Dick called at 5:45. Bathed + washed hair. Broke contact lens, tidied up a bit. Called Barker Bros. Not there. Called Timmy. Left house for Warner’s at 8:30. Was in hair styling for over an hour – I’d taken my fall + the lady, Larraine Rolands did a heavenly piece of work. Shared trailer with Susan Sullivan + Shirty (?) Makeup men Leo Lotito + Tim McNally – Assistant Directors Wally Someone + Joe Ellis. Didn’t work til almost 5 – Simulated sunshine – Darkness at noon Abbie Dalton + Fred Gwynn the leads. Stillman took some shots for me. Stopped for gas + dog food. Didn’t get home til 5:45. Thought I’d smelled smoke on the way up Lookout but didn’t give it 2nd thought. Couches + bed + chair all look lovely. Timmy had called Dr. Smith who said Hummy has “Kennel Cough” + to give him charcoal. Only had terpin Hydrate + not too appealing. Got dinner all ready. Glorious Timmy had peeled + parboiled little onions + started the pot going. We had a drink + about 8 o’clock Doug called to say he + Joan had been turned away at base of Lookout by fire trucks. Road closed. Radio cars there + TV. Big fire. We could smell smoke but couldn’t see a thing. Called fire dept who said it was a big fire but under control. Had called Leon for Val’s number who turned out to be there. Invited them as Val knows the back way but they couldn’t come. Timmy + I ate heavenly dinner + I gave him a large bowl to take home + froze enough for 2 dinners myself. Timmy left at 11. I fell asleep on new couch. Bed at 3 after waking up.
Friday Nov. 29th
Sunday 1 December 1968
Picked up Millie in front of Schwab’s – she’d gotten a ride + was early. We had coffee at home before I left for the Palisades. Saw Doug + invited him + Joan to dinner on Tuesday. Chatted with Mona + asked her over during the weekend. Said I’d call her but then never did. Interesting session with Iverson. Talked about Dick – told him he’d asked me to marry him + said that it would be a complete change of life for me. He told me that I have to face all the things for which Dick might be criticized by the people I like and that that way I’d be equipped to cope and furthermore by honestly facing them I’d probably end up caring alot more for Dick. We talked about Mother and “Our Town” and my violent allergy to unpleasantness of any sort etc. etc. Alot of food for thought. Went shopping. Came home. Spoke with Bill Tregoe + asked him over to see the house. Had hung up + 5 minutes later got costume call from 20th for – Anderson + Co. – I work Monday. Called Bill but missed him. He arrived just as I was leaving. Had a 2 hour wait at 20th – Marge Fletcher the wardrobe head. Funny girl named Susan Sullivan there – going to play a maid. Saw Bill Fuka. Didn’t get home til 6 o’clock. Gave poor Millie a ride home after calling Dick who’d called twice from Las Vegas. Dropped Millie + went on to Timmy’s with the dogs. Pleasant evening. Made tentative sort of date for tomorrow with him + Larry at my house. home by eleven – bed.
