Ross Linebaugh over early today. Went down to the office with Dick. Marty called to say the Michelburgers are very unhappy with the brickwork + won’t accept it. I wrote cards to Eddie Royce + Norman + Miriam. Sent in Profiles renewal for Browns Dick home around two – the worse for wear He went to bed and I lay down + read “Front Fishing in America” which I loved. Watched some TV. Mrs. Michelburger called + Dick after starting off reasonable started to yell at her. I got upset. Then Dick mad at me. He drove me over to her house to see the Brick work and with the exception of one join I don’t see anything wrong with it. Mailed letters and came home. Had a drink + watched TV with dinner. Dick went to meet his ‘friends’ plane which was over an hour late. Missed them. So came back + got me + we went to the Stardust to find them – A whole gang. Wimpy + June very nice. Brought them back here for some drinks + lent them the VW. They left about 2:30 am! Scotty called in the early evening Said he had the sudden feeling that I [crossed out word] am going to win an oscar!
Daylight Saving over.
Timmy called Leon called – Shirley off about 10 – We lay around – Made love – ate cantelope – finally bathed + packed. Gave Scotty Leon’s cookies + said good bye about 11:30 – Got to Burbank at two + had a leisurely lunch. Lovely clear day + we both hated to leave. Met Shirley’s brother + sister-in-law – Quick flight back. Jerry + the girls there to meet Shirley. Jack came for us. A little smashed. We came home, changed + went over to J + J’s. Danny + Marge + baby Sue there. Climate a little drunk. Had some soup + came home. Ana Armando + Nelda here. Bed about 8:15 – Leon had called. Was out when we called back. My hand alot better. Letter from James Enelow – Message from Cassie House all clean. Tomorrow we diet.
Bagpipes at Burbank airport to welcome the new Irish consul.
Dick starving at 5 am – Room service at 7. Breakfast. Scott came to pick us all up at 10:20 – Went to Lookout Mt. They’re painting + the place looks great. Went over inventory with Scotty + Carolyn. Jim called with list from office. Went to Beverly Wilshire. Shirley’s appt with Helen Davis at noon Scott + Dick + I went shopping. Went to Kerr’s met Shirley in coffee shop. She has “a great Talent” – (singing, acting, speaking or writing or art) that’s frustrated! Her numbers are all 3’s – lots of money – all good. We went to Scotty’s for a book on numerology. Then to the hotel. Timmy + Nicky met us there + we went to Brown’s for a sundae then Pickwick’s. Nice afternoon. Hotel for short rest then Leon’s. Scotty, Shirley, Dick + me. Hysterically funny evening. Laughed ourselves sick. Hotel at 12:30 –
Woke early – first at 5 – then at 7:30. Ordered coffee + made alot of calls. Called Mary Parker – slightly strained conversation. Called Mary Jean. Sorry not to see her again Called the Haases. Mary had a baby boy, Matthew + was coming home at 12 noon – too late for me to call. I called Aunt Hope who’s in the hospital. Learned Ema had had a hysterectomy last year. How awful. Called Colby + again assured her about Alaria. Then called Daddy + we had a really nice talk. He’s definitely decided against the A.O.A. meeting in Hot Springs for which I’m sorry but it’s up to him. I then spoke for a while with Julia Mullen + think we understand each other about my acct. I wrote last minute postcards to Jack + Joyce + George + Irene, Frank’s bar, the Valley Bar + Bettye + Bill Gardner. Got packed in a frantic swirl of activity. Only $13 owing on the bill which left me lots of cash. Scotty picked me up in a cab at 11:45 + we got to the Café St. Denis at the dot of 12 to meet Druscilla who came in at 15 after. Funny Funny lunch. Two drinks + then wine alternating with coffee and No-doz. Told Scotty that Dick said “I thought I was a flop in New York” to which Scotty said “Oh no he was a smashed hit.” He wrote Dick 2 matchbooks to that effect. We all split up a little drunk around 2:30 or so. I took a cab to the Chelsea + picked up my bags + then my driver, Sebastiano Rufino, waited for me on Wall St. I executed my will. gave $200 to Louis for John Lindsey, hugged him + told him Druscilla was scared of him + left. It took a good hour to get to Kennedy + I had just time to call Mrs. Davis. Then boarded the plane. Funny seat partner “Call me John Kelly or Adam Cain or Herbie Finch” We had several drinks + then after dinner we played cards so the time passed very quickly. Arrived and Dick came to meet me very drunk. As I’d been keeping myself going since lunch + making a real effort under more than ordinary temptation to stay sober I was both angry + hurt. After all it was only 8:15 his time. We got back to the house + had some wine. Scotty called to give me the name of Dotti’e scholarship fund. Then Dick + I had a very upsetting evening dwelling mostly on my money. Which seemed pretty damned unfair. Then I found out he’d been drunk last night + called Leon to discuss my money with him. It was too much + I went to bed in tears.
Up about 10:30 – Scotty called Came down around 11:30 – brought coffee. I learned that Dick got locked out last night. Drue had fallen asleep + Dick was pounding on her door + Scotty phoning her before she woke up. Scotty got us a ham + cheese sandwich which we halved. He’d gotten his passport this a.m. + visa + leaves for Scotland + England on May 5th. For about 2 weeks. I really think that’s marvelous. I gave him a ride over to “the smallpox booth” + then went down to Wall St. to see Louis Auchincloss. Cashed a check first at the downtown branch of the Bank of N.Y. My signature not on file so they had to call Jim Fleming. Nice time as always with Louis Auchincloss who signed my copy of World of Profit. Showed him wedding pictures + talked too much. Have to go back tomorrow to execute it. Went to the Owl + Pussycat + bought 2 really great smocks. Pouring rain. Eddy + Amelia very funny about the party. I had some hot dogs + sauerkraut around the corner before going up to the opening at Staempfli. Good time there. Dick + Drue, Lucille Walker, Edna somebody, Lorna Livingston. Laura Goldman + Morton Kaish (sp.) whose painting I’d loved so at Drue’s. Luckily I remembered his name + could tell him so. The exhibit left me cold. Somebody named Steven Greene. I found the paintings very cold + agree with Drue that they were really horribly phallic. We closed the place at 10 of 8. (party 5-7) I went to Stark’s for dinner Drue had to eat with the painter + didn’t want to. Back to the Chelsea at 9 o’clock. Called Dick who wasn’t there. Then he called me. Turned out he’d been asleep. Went to get the dogs + then called me back. Scotty called + he + I + Drue are having dinner tomorrow at the Cafe St. Denis. Went to sleep about 1 am.
Slept rather late. Ordered coffee. Called Alice Maynards about yarn. They can order it but I have to come in. Called Drue at the gallery + finally when I didn’t hear called Dr. Richman. Given appt. at 4 o’clock. Called Eddy + Amelia + little by little The party began to emerge. Very funny. Drue told me that after Scotty dragged Polly into the closet she + Mary “ran giggling down the hall.” Eddy said, “you mean screaming.” Also while Dick was fortunately still sleeping Scotty was making announcements like “Let’s all suck Pussy!” I went up to Alice Maynard’s + ordered the yarn. Also bought a couple of pretty sock patterns + a lovely knitting bag. Then over to Dr. Richman’s for a periodontal treatment and cleaning. Don’t have to come back until the fall. All the old strange memories under the anesthetic that I can never place when I’m out of it. Asked Mrs. Gordon + she said she always saw a long hall with a door closing at one end + opening at another + saw her grandmother who was saying “one door closes + another opens.” Interesting. Had a hamburger plate at the drugstore on the corner of 56th + then went back to the hotel. Put all the fresca which had frozen + expanded the cans into bullet shapes, the two bottles of liquor, the snacks etc into a shopping bag + went over to Drue + Dick’s. Also taking an umbrella we all felt sure was Scotty’s. Learned that Scotty had run down the street + next knew where he was at 6 AM Saturday when he found himself in an East Indian restaurant eating a meat tart + surrounded by hippies who were telling him he was a flower child + who put him in a cab. Had very funny time with Drue + Dick. Called Dick at 8 o’clock. He was on his way over to Jack + Joyce’s. Hadn’t picked up the dogs yet. Both Drue + Dick talked to him. I told him I’d probably be back Weds. After I had more to drink + suddenly to my great surprise!! I was pretty drunk. Dick took me back to the Chelsea. We had a drink at the El Quixote + then he saw me to my room. God bless Dick Jennings. Dick read me letter from Putnam who’d turned down the book.
Tallulah died early this a.m. –
Day of hanging around. No news about work. Check came from Daddy. Went shopping for wrapping paper + Christmas favors for Timmy, Rich, Les, Eve + Mary. Went to post office + bought stamps. Mailed all the checks out to the children. Went to lamp place. Still not ready. Home + fixed mashed potatos etc. for dinner. Spoke with Dick. Apologized for last night’s tirade about driving. Blah Blah. Nice talk. Mary + Les came at 7 – Eve + Rich shortly after. Timmy by cab as car had given out. Nice evening. Food good. Mary very amusing. She + Les took Timmy home. Called Mona at home + things are very bad. Told her I’d sent $500 from the Rita Fund tomorrow. We talked nearly an hour. I drank madeira as we talked. Scotty called then at midnight + we talked another hour. Told him he could stay here if he came out. Bed at 1:30 –
Picked up pictures at Film Fan Foto.
Called Scotty this morning about Mary. He sounded depressed + kept saying why’s she coming to New York. He’s thinking of cashing in his insurance + going around the world. Wants to go to Australia to live. Said that Drue doesn’t let anyone in the apartment except him because it’s such a mess! A little funny but I guess it couts out the little dinner parties for Mary that I’d fondly envisioned. I spoke with Annie again – no new ideas. Called Mitzi about anyone who might want to come to live here. Oh Lord it’s all so confusing and such a mess. I wrote a few days diary. Talked with Mary who’s at that strained withdrawn stage – Doesn’t want “to be a burden to-anyone” – etc. etc. Paul staying here tonight so I decided to go out to Henry’s one last time. Ben Wright was over at noon to show this years line of Christmas cards. I picked one of Jo Spiro’s Little Santas. Good to talk to Ben again. He’s been in Camino Real down at the Marc Taper Forum. Said he’d speak to one of the actors in the company about the apartment. Drove out to the Palisades to see Bob Iverson. Mildly tearful session as I’d foreseen. He asked about other places I’d lived and I enumerated. Actually the only ones I’ve loved are 18th St + here. Told him about Miss Buon giorno + the rats + he laughed so hard I was dying to tell him about “snake!” but I’m not really there to entertain. Told him Henry’s joke about the lady who said when FDR died “of all the people in the world this has to happen to me!” – apropos of how I feel about Mary + Paul. Oh dear. Drove to Henry’s – we played scrabble I lost – I have been for some time. Had a drink + then a very good sole dinner with white wine. Alot of talk – about the wrenchings of loss, departure, separation etc. , Henry good to talk to. I called Millie to say [crossed out letters] I’d be in around eleven + just to ring the front door bell – We went to bed around ten.
Left Harold’s about 10:30 – back to the hotel. Called Louis + made appt for tomorrow morning. Called Scotty + made lunch date for tomorrow. Made my reservations for tomorrow at 5:00 to Tulsa + Sunday afternoon Tulsa to L.A. Went to see Dr. Richman at 1:30. Had fairly long session He put in two porcelain fillings. Cut my lip quite badly + he was very upset. I on the other hand didn’t mind at all – sort of one-upman-ship I guess. Very bloody. Back to the hotel. Then over to Chemical N.Y. where I signed some papers. Mike Schwartz joined me + Lester for drinks at the Barclay. They were both very dear and I had a lovely time. Mike kissed my hand when he left and that made my day! Lester had to go to a bank party at 6:30 or so so we said goodbye + I went upstairs + lay down for a nap. Didn’t wake til 10 o’clock. Came downstairs for a late supper + went back up + read + wrote a letter to Bob Iverson. I’d wanted to before but this time I did. Had a beer brought up by room service. Finished Edith Wharton, four novellas “Old New York.” What a lovely writer. Bed about 1:30.
Fourth of July – Whee! New York quiet + sunny + just about perfect. I wrote a letter to Peter + called Jenny + George in Westport. Will go up to see them next week. Jenny loved the blanket. So good to talk to her. Nancy was on her way up there when I called. Met Scott + Drue + Dick at the 85th St Trans lux to see Ulysses. Extraordinary film. Loved Milo O’Shea. Some of it extremely upsetting. The rank anti-semitism of parts. Some extremely moving + some extremely erotic. But I was always interested. Lady behind us kept saying tsk-tsk through Molly Bloom’s long soliloquy. Why did she go? After the movie we went down to an absolutely charmed Spanish restaurant called “La Bilbaina” or as Scotty translated, “The Bilbaina”. Had a couple of drinks with hors d’oevres and a heavenly lobster paiella. Ate so much I felt almost sick. Went to the John + somebody had been sick which didn’t help. But such a funny evening. Stingers after dinner. By the time we’d finished it was still light – only 8 o’clock. Much to early to go home. It was raining and we took the crosstown bus to third + then ran from 14th to 18th in the rain darting in + out of doorways. Scotty fixed us all gimlets and read our tarot cards. Only Dick’s came out at all. Druscilla’s next passable. Mine just awful + Scotty’s the bitter dregs. Drue + Dick went up about 10:30 and Scotty + I sat + had some beer + talked + talked. I decided about midnight that I would be alot smarter to stay at Scotts than to try to find a cab in the downpour outside. He gave me the bed + slept on the couch. It was such a gay day + evening. Happy throughout + so much laughing. Not a cross word from anybody to anyone. I called Jenny about 10 o’clock as I’d asked her to have Nancy call me at Annie’s. Nancy evidently deeply engrossed in a young man she met there tonight + not available so I gave Jenny all the necessary information about tomorrow night.
Woke with heavy heavy feeling. Wrote in diary + then discovered I was all wrong. Bit by bit after several conversations with Scotty the evening all took shape. The really worst was my getting plotzed at the Sullivans. I kept saying “Gimme another” + my parting statement was “You gotta have me back to dinner again this week.” It took some time to get up the strength to apologize. When I called Dr. Sullivan just laughed through the whole conversation. I called Mother + Daddy – who just got back today after a really nice time in Hot Springs. Mother asked me if there has been any word about Mary + I said only that I knew Newcomb had written her an unfortunate letter. I went out shopping + had a nice lunch at Tibbs. Came back + pottered about, showered + washed hair. Bought some lemons + Fresca and went down to Drue’s about 7:15. Knocked at Scott’s on the way up. Drue + I had brief – very funny visit She told me a hysterical story about yelling help + the police coming. Drue doesn’t have a chest of drawers in the place which seems just terrible. I think maybe a large linen closet for the living room would be a good present as I understand Dick has a dresser. Scotty came up + Dick came shortly after we put in a call to Peter who returned it in an hour. He’d been out working on the car with Jim. He’s been avoiding Mary like the plague. She’s had Patsy + Abby calling him. Also at one o’clock Saturday morning a message was left at the service [crossed out letters] from Charles Schultz saying “Mary Enelow’s technical problem has been taken care of.” Oh Lord. Drue fixed boeuf bourgignon for dinner + it was just great. Great contre temps after dinner. Dick tried to talk to me confidentially about getting after Drue to lose weight. I told him the first time to talk to her himself. The 2nd time I called Drue who was in the John + said “Dicks been trying to get me to tell you to lose weight + I don’t think that’s fair.” Dick was furious but I really didn’t care as I would do the same thing again immediately. Scotty lightened the situation by talking about his sister who’s 5’3″ + wears a 22 1/2. Scotty + I left around midnight, had a couple of beers + I came home.
Up earlyish – wrote Peter and wrote Annie. Sent postcards to Elizabeth, Mrs. Gray, Timmy, Mary Parker, Paul, Diane + Mary. Mrs. Sullivan called + invited me to dinner. Scotty called + Drue called + I agreed to meet her + Dick at “Sound of Music” Mailed the letters + cards + went to the Sullivans. The city very quiet which is nice. Had a good time at the Sullivans – lovely dinner but too much to drink. Had 3 drinks before dinner and alot of brandy after. I left about 11 + took a cab to the Academy but it was closed (then 11:30) went to 18th Street nobody there so I went to Pete’s to wait. Found out Callaghan died. Oh dear. Had alot of beer there. [crossed out letters] Called Drue who called Scotty + he came + put me in a cab. I so rarely seem to know when I’ve had enough. As of this writing I am going to make a real effort.
↑ This it develops (The details not my stated intention) is quite innacurate. I went over to Scotty’s after Pete’s closed. He was up + had 2 guests Wally Ryan + a girl. I slept briefly at Scotts + then said I wanted to go home + he took me out to 3rd Ave + got me a cab.
