Up at 6:20 – Thanks to Dick would never have made it if it hadn’t been for him. Plane left at 7:20. Had coffee + then had breakfast at airport. Took a Ford Galaxce. + went out to Calabasses. George did my hair + I had 1/4 a manicure but she was so slow I had to leave. Met Daddy + Dick at airport at 12:20 + then into Hollywood. Several wrong turns + we got to Leon’s. Delay. Went to look for Restaurant – all closed on Saturdays Nuts! Finally wound up at Cock’n’Bull. Daddy said several times (as he’s said before) I’m so glad your Mother never lived to see me like this. I can’t walk I can’t see I can’t hear. We left Leon’s about 2:45 – with a box of cookies, bread cake etc. I was very unhappy about it. Drove downtown to Bunker hill towers + found them immediately Saw Rich An unhappy unhappy visit because he’s hard to understand + is not coordinated + Daddy can’t hear. It was awful + at one point Rich said “I wish I was dead” + Daddy concurred later – What really bugged + upset me though is that Dick went back on the sauce with a vengeance + here he was a young, healthy man – deliberately making himself – deaf, blind, unsteady + inarticulate. While in the company of two giants in medicine one who would give anything for his faculties. Had pleasant dinner with Mary + Les after – Edith Warner came over + we all went to airport
Wrote some thank you notes – Mom, Carl + Sue, Newcomb + Anne, Hil + Jim + the Keenans. Cards to David Kitchen, long one to Cordelia, George + Pat Garrett + Harvey Levinson. Paid phone bill, dog licenses, forwarded Annie’s card from Mary + wrote the Fresh Air fund that I am Michels not Hobbs. The rent check arrived + I wanted to go to the bank but Dick had my car keys + the VW battery was dead! Nelda here + I couldn’t get her home. Dick back at 4 so got to bank after all + returned Nelda, took laundry + cleaning, got M.O’s for Ana and bought groceries Home at 5:30. Mary called – James is getting married to Jean Waugh on Saturday at 2 in the afternoon. She’s 5 years older than he is + he’s only 21. Her parents names are Alga + Yandal (?!) Mary had called last night + talked with Dick who had relayed the message but it hadn’t penetrated. Bed early Annie called to say she’d gotten home safely. We watched “Lilies of the Field.”
Call at 5 – The coffee a godsend. Drove to the studio in pouring rain + pitch dark. Shared a trailer with Adele Claire My part infinitesimal but she had no lines at all. Wore blue chiffon. Bob Christianson the wardrobe man. Danced with John Howard + John Forsythe Stepped on all feet. Leon came over with Bob Kennealy. Leon + I went back to the Roosevelt, I packed + checked out. We went to his office + had lunch at Frascatti’s. Then I did a few cards in his office, changed reservation to 9:30 called Dick. Left at 4:45 for Mary’s. Got there about 5:45. Patsy + Abby there looking very tall + dear. Mary in great shape + Les too. Had a good, good time Lamb dinner. Left for airport at 8:20 + got lost. Then couldn’t find Avis return. Made the plane with only minutes to spare. Dick met me with the news Annie had had a fire in her house + is coming tomorrow night. Good God!
The situation in Jordan ghastly –
Les called around midnight to say Mary had come home. Woke up at quarter to 6 + got dressed for L.A. Bill + Jack + Dick + Armando moved all the furniture out of the den into the garage Dick took me to the airport. Rented a mustang in L.A. + drove to Calabasses. George’s shop is really nice + he did it all himself. Haircut cost $10 – the car cost $26 + the plane fare $44.00 that’s an $80 dollar haircut “But good.” Got to Leon’s office at 11:40. Waited there til 12:30 in case Les called + then went to Frascatti’s for lunch. Ate outside + had a lovely time. Leon on the front page of yesterday’s Variety Closed a deal with Martin Rackin for James Best’s script Not a great deal of money but great publicity + Best had had the script for 10 years. Leon gave me a large pkge of presents (all wrapped to mail) + I left about 2:20. Got to the airport in time for [crossed out word] an ice tea before taking the 4 o’clock plane home. Dick there to meet me. Dick Shaw + wife in town + told Dick he should go to the Master Pool Seminar in Reno. So I guess we’ll go, Oct. 8th + 9th Our phone out of order. Carl didn’t show but [crossed out letter] had left a message + I called him. He + Frank not working together but he’s got someone else + will be here tomorrow. [crossed out words] Clark + the boys came over for the wood. Made nice pile for Alice. Gifts from Leon cookies + bread + candy + another dress just like the first. I gave it to Anna as it’s too bright a red for my declining years. Watched the news – all so terrible. Had nice dinner. Early bed. Waked at one am by call from Les who had gotten Mary into the hospital + seemed to want to talk. He was thoroughly shaken + I guess it had been pretty hairy but thank God she’s in.
Up at 6:30 – Jack + Bill Murby – had coffee Tree surgeons here at 7:30. No time at all + the two trees were down. Dick came back + had them cut it up. Then left stumps. price $150 (“a bargain”?? When I told Dick it was $150 – including stump removal We were “being had”?) Spoke with Alice – Made reservations for L.A. – called Hertz. Called Les – Mary hadn’t gone to work (thank God) Took Joyce to the airport via the bank + then the Safeway. Went back to the Safeway + put $50 in the dime machine – now over a thousand. Home to find a certified letter from Challenge Cook Bros saying they were going to sell the squeeze-crete. called Dave who said to send someone down there to bid on it. He scared the hell out of me. Anna, Nelda, Jeffrey + I went shopping. Then I took Nelda home + went to see Dave. He called Challenge Cook + by God + our good fortune the “F. Paterra” who had signed the letter was someone he knew from McKeesport, Pa!! Everything okay. Went back to the office + put poor Shirley’s mind at ease. Got my $200 back from Marty. Dick + I went to see Alice – Stella there – showed them the plans. Went home + had a very good dinner. I was on phone thru most of it with Les. Mary had disappeared. The police in Century City had called about her + he went to get her but she’d gotten away. Poor Les – it’s been really rough – But he’s got to get her in a hospital. He’s afraid it will “wreck” their marriage. I think any more of This business will. Told him I’d be at Leon’s at noon. Called Leon. Went to bed about eleven. Started to clear the den.
Busy Busy Day. Dick off early. I wrote diary + made plane reservations. Paul Rogers by + talked with him about working by the hour. Later talked with Shirley. Told her to keep the $2,000.00 owed me but not to mention it. Called Alice to say I couldn’t make the “Breakfast Club” today. Called some of my interview kids. Called Jim Brown + Timmy [crossed out words] about L.A. Washed dishes. Did four or five loads of wash including yellow bedspread + green blanket. Paid Nevada Power, Mr. Mendoza + Florist bill – Mailed Alaria papers. Worked on lines all day long as I did chores. Lucky thing as the phone rang at 4 o’clock and a gay little voice said “Auntie P! Hi!? It was Jess + a friend, Marty McLeery in North Las Vegas. I was completely thrown + told her so. Had to go out + do shopping so told her not to come to the house til 5:30. Went to cleaners, Drugstore Safeway + got back by 5. Jess + friend sitting on porch swing. Told then they could stay in the den on the couches. Had to pack + get together wardrobe for L.A. Discovered my bone shoes were beyond repair + Dick who’d just come back raced me over to the B’way + bought me a new pair – perfect. Home + had a drink and a sandwich + got off somehow. As a matter of fact, felt a little better about leaving Dick with the two girls to keep him company. Met a pretty little girl on the plane named Luane Wallace. Ended up by giving her Leon’s phone number although I told her that he wasn’t taking anyone. Picked up my car – a mustang + drove to the Roosevelt. Talked to Leon + called Mary – Talked with Debby + then Mary who came in as I was about to hang up. Went down to the bar for a drink + got involved in bizarre conversations with an ex-producer, an ecologist and a merchant of sunglasses. 4 or 5 old fashioneds later, I went to bed at 1 a.m.
Wrote a letter to Timmy on the plane.
Going to L.A. Up early. Woke Daddy a little after 7 o’clock. Washed my hair + put Detective club books for Mary + Rembrand Etchings for Rich in a shopping bag. Dick took us to the airport. Newman ran a good mile after the car. Our plane on time. Evidently a tour was on it from Hawaii + it was crowded. Sat next to a nice Negro lady Mrs. Glover who mentioned rather casually having several bullets in her. Mary + Les met us. Mary looks + is great. Cool in L.A. Drove to Good Samaritan to see Rich + though his speech is most definitely affected + hard at times to understand he was alot better than we hoped. Mary + I gave him the Rembrandt book together After our visit (Daddy sat with him maybe 15 minutes) we went out to So. Babbette + had the tour of the house. It looks lovely and Mary’s garden is really impressive – every sort of flower + bush + quite a few small trees. Les + Mary took us to Charley Brown’s in the marina for lunch. The drink service was awful but Les took care of us + the food waitress was a very cute little girl who reminded both Mary + me of Debbie. We had 2 splits of champagne + drank to Mother – it would have been their 53rd anniversary. Then Les drove us all around the marina. Back to the house + then to the airport. Mary gave me a whole stack of mysteries. Our plane was late + Mary visited with us while poor Les “circled” the airport! Good good visit. Back to Vegas. Dick had bought a whole lot of patio furniture from Leisure World who went bankrupt for 730 – value $1500. Also some redwood for us. Whee. Letter from adoption people + phone bill. 2 pools sold – both good ones went to Hughes air terminal for dinner – long day. martinis!!!
11 1/2 hours – Child Haven
Impossible to get up. Dick not working. Wendy came over at 10 o’clock to visit and after one look at me said she’d come another time. I got some coffee going and by the time Mary + Les came was passably awake. We had coffee + called Daddy. Les called a local friend in Advertising – Bob Fenton. I spoke with him too + will go see him sometime. I took Mary + Les to the airport. Did a little shopping + came home. Jimmy Judge came over. He + Dick (who was just getting up) had some of Irene’s cake + we all had coffee. I left at 1:35 for Child Haven. Very quiet there + the older kids depressed as it was a holiday + their case workers weren’t working. Took my blanket for Dick to show them. Worked with Vanessa + Eartha + Sharon. Vanessa doing well. Home via Wonder World. Dick had finished a pint and a half of bourbon with John Carpenter + I was teed off. No mail today. Had asked Jimmy Judge for dinner but he couldn’t come (called at 6:15) I heated up the boeuf bourgignonne for dinner. Watched TV. Finished cap for the boy at Child Haven. Bed about 11.
Our Anniversary – Millie + Ike called at 8:30 + Dick said we’d call back. Slept another 4 hours. I got up + fixed coffee. Irene came over with a beautifully decorated Devil’s Food cake for us. Had coffee with me. Showed her Dick’s blanket. The children Sue + Chris went out to look for lizards. Dogs no trouble. Mary + Les called at 4:00. Dick up at 4:30. Called Howard Werner who asked Dick when we were going to take advantage of his invitation at Louigi’s. Dick asked if 4 of us could go tonight. Yes – a booth at 8:00. Called Millie + Ike. Nice chat. Mary + Les over to give us a bottle of champagne. We took it over to Jack + Joyce as a token for Jack’s birthday. They gave us one of those fancy table lighters as an anniversary gift. God. Met Mary + Les at Louigi’s. Nice dinner + nice time. Went over to the Aladdin after. My fault (if I have to blame someone) Dick left after a bit + Les + Mary brought me home. Dick up + drunk + angry at me for staying. I felt that to be with a brother-in-law who doesn’t drink + would bring me home was the very safest + best place he could leave me. Forget it. Bed at 3 am. (Dick doesn’t work tomorrow as it’s a legal holiday.) The Michels called us at 6 o’clock – just as we were going to call them.
Wild Rainy day. Thunder + lightening _ heavy hail storm. I was up at 10:30 When the Florist came with a really beautiful arrangement of orchids from Cassie, Mom + George. Was very touched. Knitted + pottered around. Went over to meet Mary + Les about 3:30. Had a sandwich at the Hacienda – First Dick had taken me to Child Haven to drop off a crochet hook for Pam Notero (I thought her name was Pamela Ferrell!) Dick + Les went to look at the house on Bonita and Mary + I played the machines at Wonder World. I lost but Mary stayed absolutely even. They’re much looser than the machines at the Hacienda. Left + came back to the house. Had a drink + then went over to Zorba’s. Had a nice dinner and a really funny evening although we stayed for the first part of the show and it was too long to sit there. We left in separate cars at 11 o’clock. Dick was willing to stop for a night cap – We went to the Valley bar + with a roll of nickels I hit 777 and won $55.17. Bought the bar a drink. We played 3 games of pool + I played again with someone named Shirley? – While her husband talked with Dick. We left about 2:30 or 3:00 A.M. Because of jackpot told Dick we were even for the weekend.
Took CCA points over to Norma Lamb.
Woke when Leo called. Dick told him where the job was + then back to sleep. Both of us a little shaky. I didn’t go to Gloria’s. We went to Waller Lumber about 12:30 or so and bought some more molding, a new drill bit, a sander and a gallon of dark oak stain. Stopped + saw Jessie Emmett. I liked her + thought she was very encouraging about the house on Bonita. Dick heard of a deal from Brownie that I think really sounds good. A 40 acre parcel to be broken up in lots. We stopped by the house. Roy has finished it. Then to Lum’s for lunch. I deposited Carolyn’s rent check in the bank + had to go through the usual “there will be a 10 day wait” crap. Came home + made love. I was all for “a little nap” but my God – it was 4 o’clock! And so we started on the molding on the front of the shelves. We worked right through to ten o’clock at night then had dinner. Both of us ready to drop but all the top shelves finished. The sander was the very best buy in the world. As soon as Dick nailed on the strips I’d set the nails + putty the holes + then he’d sand the whole thing. It all looks so much better than I’d even dared to hope. I called Mary today + they’re coming next weekend on Saturday or Sunday. I told her they could use the VW. Tomorrow the staining begins. We watched the late news in bed + then to sleep.
The Mets won Series score 2-1 now!
Windy day – or so it seemed. So Dick + George decided not to pour. We went to Waller Lumber (after I’d called in again at Gloria Marshall’s) We bought angle braces – hollow wall anchor molly screws, wood screws, corrugated fasteners, finishing nails + 3 sheets of plywood which we had them cut for us. Came home + went to bed. Made love, slept, made love + then about noon staggered up + had a little lunch then went to work. We finished the whole bottom part about 6 o’clock. I have a feeling I make Dick nervous but he doesn’t like to work by himself either. We watched some TV + once again had TV dinners. I’m so happy we’re working on the shelves – The only trouble is I don’t seem to manage to get one other single thing done + the house is a mess. Bed unmade, dishes piled up – laundry here + there + saw dust everywhere. The sprinklers all springing leaks too so I doubt if our lawn will ever come up. Oh dear + why aren’t there 45 hours per day?
Mary called – she + Les coming to Las Vegas the weekend after this coming one. He’s gone back into Advertising + they were “legally” married in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago. I said I’d let her know if we’d be here – We’d been thinking of an L.A. trip for Bill’s opening.
Up around 10 or so. I called Carolyn Brown at 10:30. Woke her which I seem to do always. Told her I’d call back at 4:30 for the book shelf measurements which I do want. We went the the Stardust Golf Course for breakfast. Then to Von Tobelo where we looked for contact paper or wall paper for the sliding doors in library. Ended up with paint, Then to wonderworld. Got all sorts of things including a bathroom rug + king size blanket for $15 (together) Dick got more sprinkler stuff and I bought groceries etc. Home. Dick fixed up a really impressive system for the front section by the porch. Bubblers to the bushes all along the house + to both little rows of evergreens. With small semi-rainbirds for the lawn part. I made a fruit compote and a green bean caserole [casserole] for dinner with steak in wine sauce. Finally got measurements from Carolyn. We napped a bit before dinner. I am tired, tired, tired + can only assume it’s because of drinking again – Didn’t have much tonight. Leon called in the afternoon. And after dinner I called Mary to wish her Happy Birthday. Spoke with Les the first time + then Mary who’d been out to the store called back collect. Bed about 10:00.
Dick put out garbage. I packed the papers from my file cabinets, remaining pictures etc. and took small green chest of drawers with all my knitting in it out to Pecos. [crossed out word] Trunk door flew up on the way back + when I stopped on Tropicana road to fix it there was a yell + it was Dick who was at Tropicana pools across the street. Went to Panorama market + bought some towels etc. Vegas village for shelf paper + looked for curtains but they don’t have them. Shell station for exterminator strips. I wrote a letter for Dick + paid the gas bill. Called Mary who sounded in great shape. She + Les go East next Wednes. after the twins leave. Had meant to call Equitable Life in L.A. but didn’t get around to it. Dick home about two and we took a rather long nap + then packed alot more + drove out to Pecos about 6:30. I had the dogs as well as a car full of stuff + Dick had quite a bit on the truck. Dick decided he felt like a drink so after we’d unloaded + called Jack + Joyce + said we’d bring the bed over he went out to get a bottle. I took the bed apart + had it all on the front porch thinking it would be a lovely surprise. He was really annoyed + muttered something about looking like “god damned okies” – which made me laugh. Went to J + J’s. Jack + Dick unloaded + after a few drinks things lightened up a bit. Good dinner played poker + Dick won. Home at [crossed out letter] midnight + Dick wanted to go to the Castaways. We did + I lost what I had which wasn’t much + Dick won $1200 + we left with it. Stopped at Frank’s (so much frosting!) + came home at an undetermined hour.
I called Patsy + Abby at 7 o’clock to say goodbye to them –
A lot hungover – Called Elizabeth to get Mary’s unlisted number. Made date for Tuesday with Elizabeth. We went out to see Mary + stopped at a Norm’s along the way for lunch. It helped. Got out to Mary’s place + nobody there (we’d tried calling 4 times but the line was busy). Left a note. Dick said the whole project looked like a movie set of an English village. the house colors really pretty bleak. Back to Lookout Mt. and to bed. Dick changed his flight from 7:20 to 9:20. We ate dinner in the Burbank restaurant + I found a paperback mystery behind the table. Hated to see him go. Drove back to Lookout Mt. Took a few boxes upstairs to the Den. Mary called – their phone had been out of order. Dick called when he got back to Cactus Lane. Phone rang about three and it was a crank call. Couldn’t sleep for a long while after. Odd – I’m no longer used to being alone
