Scotty called us in the morning – asked him to our party tonight. Spoke with Drue. We’d changed time til 9:00 Made more sense Drue + Dick are giving us the tickets last night for a wedding present. We went up to Chemical Bank (NO more N.Y. Trust in the name!) + met Lester + Julia + had a quick look around. Went over to Sardis for a very gay lunch with 3 bloody Mary’s for me + 3 martinis for Dick. Everything had gone so well that I told Lester to invite Julia I’d originally said no while we were still in Vegas + Dick was up tight about meeting people. Julia is handling my acct. now. She’s a gay pleasant person + seems extraordinarily with it. Lester’s dachshund [crossed out word] is named Herman + that clinched it with him + Dick. His dog is about to be a father + we’ve been offered a puppy. At the moment we’re taking it. Next stop Bank of N.Y. at 2:45 to cash a check Went to see Jim Fleming who promptly took us over to the Algonquin + bought us 2 more drinks. Then at 4:30 back to the Chelsea where we started inviting people. Co + Russell Eddy + Amelia, Drue + Dick. Mary Parker + friend (named Polly Ferguson). Mary + Saul. (They came although Mary was going into the hospital tomorrow for induced labor with second baby!) Scotty + Harriet. Harold couldn’t come. Nor Lester + I couldn’t reach Peggy Pope. Dick was helpfully pouring bourbon the while I called! We went out at 8:15 to get the liquor + snacks + glasses – etc. for the party. No time to eat dinner. Talk about dumb! All the above mentioned appeared. Dick was absent for an hour or so. Went to get the car + planned to drive to Philadelphia + “get that over with.” Thank God he changed his mind + “went into a bar to sober up.” Thank God They wouldn’t serve him so he came weaving back midway into the party. Having missed Russell in White Nehru Jacket + beads who’d been combing the local bars with Eddy as support in search of the missing guest of honor. Drue + Dick had taken a nap + almost missed the party. Arrived when Scotty did at midnight. Harriet there in plaid trimmed dark glasses upset by her face lifting but from what I remember she looked great. Mary Parker sat on Dick’s lap + I got furious. Scotty got very drunk + chased Polly F. into the closet. Mary + Polly left soon after. Dick dozing through alot. Eddy + Amelia, Dick + Drue + Scotty the last to leave but much of this is later information
Heat 99 – Paul in + out all day – packing + cleaning + putting out the garbage which was nice. A letter came for Mary from Shirley + Bill which I read her. They have room for her including a bed. Good news + I think she was much relieved. Her plane to Chicago leaving at midnight. Another day of knitting + reading. Seri Murad called to say he’d like the apartment but now I’m not sure. Told him had another prospect and I’d let him know by Saturday. Mary C. came over in the afternoon for her bridge table + we had a nice visit. Jane popped in + out to pick up her sunglasses. Mary suggested I post a notice about the apt. in County General. After she left I called Doug who goes in there on Wed + who said if I left the notice at the desk for him in the morning he’d see it was posted where the residents + interns gather. I drove over to Leon’s about 7:30. He submitted me today for a part that sounds just great – a salvation army worker. Will keep fingers crossed. We had cold chicken, cold artichoke hearts + cold asparagus for dinner – preceded by caviar. It was a funny evening but I left early – about 10 o’clock. Called Leon when I got home + then had a beer + knitted + read some more. I’m loving David Copperfield. Wept copiously this morning at the death of his Mother. I guess it brought back Mother reading it to me.
Called Bert today about Phil Paulson + made date to take my film script over on Friday
Up fairly early. Mary Parker called. Not leaving til tomorrow. Mail came at 9:30 but no word from Bill + Shirley for her. It was a hot day and I stayed home through all of it. Knit + read alot of the day. Had to tear out all I’d done + start again. In order to get [crossed out word] the large size Bill wants I have to use the medium direction as I seem to be knitting much too loosely. I paid some bills and mailed them out along with Mary’s package to Winnie. I’m in a continuing state of apathy but the knitting I guess is something. Jane came over + then Phil Paulson, Bert’s physical therapist friend. I really liked him however he has to spend 3 nights a week in the Valley so that wouldn’t really solve my problems. Took Jane home – she ran into Paul at the store + then went on with the dogs to Timmy’s. We watched the opening “Laugh-In” – had good dinner and maybe a little too much to drink as I went on + on at great length about the significance of the house + Mary + Paul’s moving blah blah blah. Nice for me – a bit much for Timmy but I do feel I’ve put up with alot too. Got annoyed at him then for not wanting to talk to Carey + his wife about it. Came home + Paul was here + Tony Cedillo who came up on business + was staying an extra day to help Paul move. I had a couple of beers with them + then came down + went to bed. Very hot.
Tearful sort of day – Leon came over with somebody to look at the apartment (not interested) + while I was showing it to him Leon put a great big fish in my freezer. He also brought over some flowers. I was feeling pretty dreary + they left almost immediately. Jim Parker + a friend named Dan came over. Jim invited me to join them for dinner. I didn’t really say yes but I didn’t say no. Clifford. David, an actor in Ben’s play came over with a turkish friend named Siri Murad who wanted to see the apartment. He doesn’t have a car so it seems a little pointless. I made alot of calls today. Called Peggy Pope who said she had been thinking of calling me! As did Harold Stern. If true – how odd. Anyway both will do what they can for Mary Parker. I’ve spoken now with Eddie + Amela too + Scotty. Called David Kitchen and had very sad talk with Margaret. David has lost everything he has + Margaret is selling all their things to get enough to go back to England. She sounded so unhappy I was glad I’d called her. David has a job he couldn’t afford to turn down in a theatre in Virginia. He never should have left the theatre. I wrote notes to Dr + Mrs Sullivan, Norman + Miriam + Harriet. Mary’s mood was getting better + mine worse. Nancy Young came over + I decided not to have dinner with Mary + Jim. Called Jim but he sounded so unhappy I almost changed my mind. However I didn’t. Waved goodbye Mary in the gathering gloom + burst into tears. Bruce there + came in + had a beer with me + was very consoling. I gave him Leon’s fish + flowers. Went to bed about eleven/thirty. Started Bill’s sweater today + David Copperfield tonight.
Somewhat better day although no reason for it. I guess the panic has subsided a little. Spoke with Mary C. over the phone. Still haven’t bought her birthday present. Went to Leon’s office at 2 o’clock. Got a ticket en route for speeding. The policeman thanked me for my “courtesy” + wished me luck in my career!! Went with Leon to “Scream Gems.” Saw Lou Deuser + had a nice chat in the ante room. Met Ernest Losso – casting director for “Bewitched” + Here come the Brides.” Liked him. Ran into dear Wes Kenney. Next to Columbia. Saw Fred Breskin – nice secty’ – Barbara Williams (?) who complemented me on Time of the [crossed out letters] Cuckoo. Saw the name Dave Dwarski on a door + wondered if it’s the same David from “Take Her She’s Mine” Took a nap because I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Went to Timmy’s with Mary and Humbug Good dinner. On the way I thought of Annie Sullivan apt. + got all excited. When we got back we had some beer + I called Annie – got her about one. The place alas is sublet. Was sorry I’d talked so much about it. Went to bed around 2 am. Mary has been packing things + moving them out to Jim’s all day. Her mother called in the morning and told her to come home for a little which she’d planned to do.
Sen. Ed Muskie Vice presidential nominee.
Was over at Studio City at 7. Makeup man Dick Cobos liked him. Hairdresser Armiene- funny lady + the hair band worked marvelous. Thelma the wardrobe lady a bit of a pain kept telling me she’d never seen anyone perspire so much + that I really had a problem. She’d been supposed to put shine in + forgot. Therefore I was late getting on to the set + she made my day by telling the AD (Richard Learman) that I had “a bit of an accident.” (Christ!) Charles Barton, the director looks like Mr. Magoo + couldn’t have been nicer. I played the part a little fruity and I suppose he liked it as nothing was said to the contrary. Had free time between 11 and two. Went to Ed Hartman’s office + autographed the book for him and we sat + talked for about 20 minutes then I went over to the “three sons” set. Old home week. Barbara Morrison was working + we had brief chat. Fred de Cordova kissed me + so did Bill Demarest. Very supportive to be so well remembered. Went to the trailer for a bit + went over the 2 speeches for the afternoon + wrote in diary. Went to the commissary for lunch about 12:15 and was joined by Bill Demarest + then Ed Hartman. Bill had gotten upset with Fred who’d meant to be funny but was needling him about lines. Too bad. I went back to Bill’s trailer with him for a few minutes and he told me to put $1 on #17 when I got to Vegas. Oddly enough so did Timmy (Bill gave me the buck) He invited me to lunch tomorrow. Saw Virginia Martindale. Other AD on the show John Gaudioso. The kids very cute + “Buffy” a darling. Ken Tobey, Pepe Hern, Sue Casey other actors. Brian Keith pleasant although very withdrawn. Was finished my bit around 4:30 but they kept me til nearly 6. Raced to the Pairon [crossed out word] Restaurant at the music center for Moose’s birthday party. Annie not there as the onstage girl drummer had broken her wrist + Annie had gone to the hospital with her. Fritz, Joe, Phil (?) Moose, Vicky (?) + Allen(???) Pleasant group but very rushed + I wasn’t dressed or with present. Took Hummy to the store + bought dog food + hairbands + beer. Had 2 of the latter with Mary Parker – 9 am call tomorrow. The heat unbearable. Looked at tomorrow’s lines + put in 7 am wakeup. I guess professionally it was a very good day today.
Made a lot of calls today. Lunch tomorrow with Neil Burkhardt. Spoke with Henry who’s sounding better. Lee Garmes, Leon, Lee Hanna + Newcomb who said he’d written Daddy about his + Anne’s separation. I wrote Anne a long letter to accompany Mother’s journal. Janie came over at 2:30 to drive out to the Palisades with me to see Doug. I took Mother’s journal to Bob Iverson and he found it extremely touching. Said “your mother was a very sensitive woman.” We talked more then about anger and I told him about the time I’d hit Joan Crane and then years later – 16 months or so ago about hitting Peter. He asked me later about drinking now and I told him it had all changed + that there were no more arguments. However I neglected to tell him that there was physical frustration and that that has manifested itself when I’ve been drinking. I didn’t purposely omit that but there must be a strong subconscious inhibition about mentioning it or discussing sex. Will bring it up next time. Janie was late at Doug’s but she came back with me + helped fix dinner for Timmy, Erica the Erdmans + Mary Parker. Meatballs of course but the last of them. After we played bridge and I made a really horrendous goof playing in hearts went up later + had beer with Mary Parker. Spoke with Penny James today in New London about Doug’s offer to some young internist not really interested but good talking to her.
Russia invaded Czechoslovakia accompanied by East German, Bulgarian + Hungarian troops.
Busy Busy once again – up at 7:30 – washed blouse, shaved legs, made bed. Cleaned up more papers etc. Drove out to Flax + picked up Timmy’s water colors. They look lovely. Went to Neil Sloanes + George cut my hair really beautifully. Stopped to pick up the cake at Frieda Schroeders – Very Equine lion. Home + cleaned + puttered. Jane over at 1:00. We had a sandwich. I was going to take a nap all day but never got to it. We started in on the salad about 2:30 finished at 4:15. Janie went with me for ice. Mary made popcorn. Everything ready + set up by 7 o’clock. Lee + Ruth Garmes the first to arrive – Then Caro Jones + son Jack who’s a dear – After that it was fairly thick + fast. Dick + Sharon + Timmy. Bert + Barbara, Rae O’dell, Bill Tregoe + Dolores Quintar. Harry McDonald + Jan Hughes with Leon + Jenny Arness + a delightful guy from New Zealand named Andrew Stevens who had to leave early. Lane Allen arrived without date. Ed + May Brennan brought Dorothy Brisbois. Fran Turner + Dick Whitfield came with sister Dorothy Mc Cord + young English musician David Sharif (?) Murray McLeod + Jimmy Sullivan arrived with the incredible news that Russia had invaded Czechoslovakia. Too awful. Lee Hanna came with three guys – 2 young + a little difficult at first but after (as Mary P observed) realizing it wasn’t a very competitive party thawed out. Val de Vargas arrived after dinner + stayed late. We had about 36 of 38 people + everything went really extremely smoothly. The bitke was a great success + I sent bowls of it home with the Garmes, The Whitfields + Rae. Caro + Virginia Martindale made Leon open his presents which was very gay. Leon beaming. Everybody toured the house + made much of Mary’s painting. Think it may have been very good for her. I gave Lane a copy of my book for his children Scott + Laurie. Really felt it all went like a dream. Everyone helped + everyone had enough to eat + drink + had a good time Humbug was Mr. Perfect behavior. Party ended about 1 or 1:30. Cleared a little up + went to bed. Bill’s birthday is Sunday + David Lewis is having a party for him.
Busy Busy Day and gray. Up at 9. Ordered the liquor. Went to pick up Bess + had steam bath, facial + massage. Over to Vine American to get more plates + gummed guest cards + paper flowers. Safeway Drug center for ice chest, tamer slotted spoon + a few personal items. Home at 1:30. Messages from Monique James office – Henry Jones in the hospital with six broken ribs and a broken wrist. Was thrown from his sulky when the tree broke + horse bolted. He called himself + sounded ghastly. Mary + I went over to see him though + he looked remarkably well though disheveled. I sent him flowers with note “of all the people in the world this has to happen to me.” We didn’t stay too long. Talked with Bert + Barbara – they’re coming. Called Ed Hartman + Cynthia Lyndsay about Henry Saturday night. Mary P + I shopped at the supermart + came home with seven bags of groceries. Total bill however about $36.00 not bad. Ordered flowers for the party. We hung paintings. Have “Red Interior” downstairs now. Spoke with Donigs – they can’t come. Called Jenny Arniss who can come. Leon called quite a bit + by the end I was getting a little frantic as Mary + I were up to our ass in bitke balls. Jim P. over today + left [crossed out words] Abernathy. Hummy a nervous wreck. A bit thick. Mary + I rolled nearly 200 meatballs + sauteed them + she got six huge loaves of garlic bread prepared. Not finished until [crossed out letters] after 1 am. Tired. Made list of stuff to do tomorrow. The worst I think is over + things seem under control. Janie coming to help in the afternoon. I finally found Mother’s journal + will send it off to Anne as soon as the party is over. Had pleasant chat with Mary + have invited her and the kids plus David + Deb + Les + Mike to dinner Friday night. She starts jury duty tomorrow – Put in wakeups for 7:30 and 8:00.
Up at 9:30 to plug in coffee + Annie gone – God knows how. Went back to sleep for another couple of hours. Fran Turner Whitfield called at 11:30 – nice chat. Looking forward to meeting her + getting started on the book. Spoke with Lee Hanna + she + Marc coming. Called Rae O’dell to tell her I’d given her name to Neil Burkhardt. Tried Penny + Bill James again without luck. Went upstairs + went over guest list and shopping lists with Mary Parker. I think things should be pretty well under control. Janie called + offered to help, also wants to spend Tuesday night here – fine. Mary Parker + I hung the paper garlands – “instant party” and made the Hallmark paper lion centerpiece. I knit hard on Leon’s sweater but discovered about 1 am that I’d divided wrong at the neck and the whole thing is off center Had to cut 8 inches off the front. Despair + it can’t possibly be ready [crossed out letters] for Tuesday night. Mary P + I went to Timmy’s for dinner. And then stopped by to see Leon who’s getting all excited + nervous about his party. I did alot of clearing away of papers and books etc but have so much left to do that it brings the Augean Stables unpleasantly to mind. That was all shit though + could be dealt with more easily! Bed about 1:45 Called Leon’s friend Rose Rose – “She’s cruel and she’s brutal but she’s a good friend. Do you see what I mean?”
Up at 7. Winnie off to Pat Walkers at 8:20. I started in on preparing things for tonight. slicing + paring + washing the raw vegetables and marinating the steaks etc. Rae in at 9:30. Had coffee with me + got started on my signs etc. Said she hoped I was closer to the 22nd + the 24th as I had very strong FAMILY things on latter that would interfere with my career. Well I guess that’s proof that it’s the 24th. Blah Blah Blah. Astrology does allow for “transmutation” which is the essence of analysis. Odd that that’s what I’m working on now with Bob. I cleared the dining room Table of Ritas mss. and papers. When Winnie came back she helped me set it + I wrapped the gifts I have for her and the stationary for the Enelows. I left messages for Henry Jones and for Peggy Pope. Spoke with Mary. We had a low calorie plate at Al’s again + I called Leon. Went to the beach at 1:30. Got there at 2:20. Pleasant time sunning. 910 Via de la Paz at 4:30. I left a card for Bob Iverson. Talked some with Doug. He said that Winnie had odd skin – “doughy” and that’s very often a sign of thyroid imbalance. He felt that it was extremely likely that there was something off as she should have lost weight. Was impressed that she’d stuck to the diet never the less + also with the 7 inch loss. Winnie told me Doug was the “greatest” and that she wished he was her Doctor. So he’s done it again. Came home via Carl’s. Bought cottage cheese, a few diet things + sone ice. Rae + Doug (her friend) stayed for a drink + I asked him tomorrow night. Winnie upset. Mary + the kids arrived at 7 o’clock. Had drinks while the fire got going. Pleasant dinner after which Sue + Marg ran around the block. Invited Winnie who wouldn’t go. They gave her a lovely scarf and a bead set. The kids all left about 9:30 or so. We went upstairs to see Mary Parker. Jim arrived. We had beer. Winnie unhappy about everything – Rae’s friend Doug, Margie, Erica, blah blah blah! She’s an extremely negative child + I find it wearing + was discussing later with Mary Parker who said she’d thought she was going to get sick of my family. I was annoyed + left in a huff. Did a little work on one of Rita’s plays. Think I’ll forget about arrangements with Mary P. for next week.
Up at 7 am. Diary. fixed grapefruits for the day. looked over script. Called Bess to change appt. to Sat. Woke Winnie at 7:30. She came down + had breakfast but had painful back sunburn so we decided to change her appt. too + she went back to bed. I called Peggy Pope to see about coming to lunch at Studio City with Winnie on Monday. She’s going to be in San Francisco alas and then is going back to New York in ten days. Rae arrived just as I was leaving and I gave her some more poems and the first half of the novella. Forgot to say goodbye to Winnie as I was late starting. Got to Studio City at 11:00. Ready to go at 11:45. Lunch at 1:30. Ate with Sarah Selby + were joined by Joan Thomkins and then Fred de Cordova. (Gee I like him). So glad to get to know Joan T. at long last. We have an enormous list of mutual friends from Hal Gould to Ben Wright to Lyle to Florida Trubus + on + on. Teary unexpected moment at lunch about divorce. Afternoon dragged on. Two makeup brushups but didn’t work. At 4:30 they told Bill Demarest + me to go home – they decided to cut that scene. (I have no lines in it) Saw Ed Hartman + Virginia Martindale + both said yesterdays rushes look good. Betty Lamm stopped by + I promised to call her. Came home by way of Safeway, bought lovely steak. Timmy had called – he’s back – Oh dear oh dear. Tried to tell him how busy I am. Winnie getting Tonsillitis again. She’s been supposed to have a tonsillectomy + wants to have it here. Called Doug + have appt for tomorrow. We wrote Mather letters + I showed Winnie mine so it wouldn’t be in conflict. Then discovered after we’d mailed them that she’d told Mather she had tonsillitis again + wanted a tonsillectomy while I’d written she was fine. I was pretty annoyed. Mary Parker went with us to see Rosemary’s Baby – good film. Discovered while waiting inline in Westwood that Winnie had left front door unlocked. Oh Lord – Nobody robbed the house + this too shall pass.
Up at 5 am. Went over script. Washed hair, bathed + pottered a bit. Drove out to Studio City at 6:35. Took H’wood F’wy + kept on it – had to turn back but some how made it in time. Nice makeup men. Bob somone + Tom Case. Lilian – hairdresser. Mort Singer + Sid Sidman Asst. Directors. Met Charlie Robinson inthe morning. pleasant. My stuff went well. Fred de Cordova told me several times in front of everyone it was “fine” “perfect” – and once off the set told me I was very good. Busy day so it meant alot to me. Had lunch with Joan Thompkins + a script girl. Hot as hell outside. Called Bonestell’s + had flowers sent to Liza. Called Bess + made appt for Friday which I may have to cancel becasue of Millie. Was given some extra lines (and good ones) in last scene. Also a closeup I hadn’t expected. I didn’t leave til 6:15 – Close to a 12 hour day! but felt very good about it – though exhausted. Picked up a few groceries + came home. Note from Bank of N.Y. that the $6,000 had arrived. Note from Newcomb – He + Busy come next Thursday. Triple A bill for Peter. Winnie fixed me a salad for dinner Didn’t feel hungry enough to eat any more. Mary P + I had a drink. She + Winnie had gone to Annie’s pool + lain about in the sun. They went for a walk after dinner and I took a nap. Got up + was just considering a game of spite and malice when Jim Parker came + took Winnie + Mary for a ride. I sent Leon a check for $4,000 Special Delivery. I deposited $1,000.00 in my Cal. acct. I wrote Newcomb – and I wrote Peter, enclosing the Triple A bill + copy of my tax letter and told him I’d like to see him sometime + talk. Winnie + Mary back. Mailed all letters + went to bed about 12:30 – wakeup for 7. Timmy called from Miami today but no message “would call back” – Rae has finished all Rita’s Mss that I ‘ve proofread. Help. Have done some of novel
[crossed out words] Courtney Elizabeth Terry born today – Diet
Up at 7. Winnie down at 7:30. Seventh day on diet. I took Winnie to Pat Walker’s at 8:30. Went to get Bess + had steam + massage. Picked up Winnie + came home. Sunny day. Rae here. Trouble with the machine + they’re bringing a new one tomorrow. Got things together to go to beach. Winnie came downstairs in her bathing suit complained that it was getting “baggy.” I told her it was because she was getting thin. She said but it looks awful it’s all baggy. I got very peeved. She has got to start looking at things a little more positively. I said so but was in a foul humor from then on. We picked up Annie tried to put the top down. Had to go to a VW place for help that didn’t improve my humor. Annie did (improve it) Drove out + doubled back thru Malibu Canyon. Too much sun for all. Winnie very red. Humbug miserable at beach. Wouldn’t go near the water this time. Left at 4. Didn’t look at script which added to my foul mood + nobody’s fault but mine of course. Came home + took nap from 4:20 to almost 7. No mail came. We had dinner and then I began to work on script. Copied it all down. Winnie cued me through a couple of times. Leon called with my call – 7 am tomorrow and shooting schedule. Mostly in + out shots. Winnie taking the bus to Pat Walker’s tomorrow. She went to bed about 11 o’clock I went up + saw Mary P + had a furtive beer. then came down + went to bed. Wakeup call for 5 am. Called Bob Iverson + changed appt. or rather, cancelled. Til next week. John Terry called + Liza had a little girl, Courtney Elizabeth – 6 lbs 14 oz at 3:35 this afternoon. How nice.
Up about 8. Wrote diary. Called Pat Walker + will have to arrange a new contract there for Winnie – minimum of 40 hours but I can take the left over sessions. Rae here at 10:30. Gave her Lyle’s paper to type. She’s free for a while. This is her vacation!! Went shopping. Got Winnie an earplug for her radio. Bought steak + chicken + vegetables at Safeway. Had Fruit Salad (“nothing else”) for lunch. Went to Pat Walkers at one. Made arrangements. Went to May Co. + bought wool + moth stuff. Came back. Winnie through at 2:30. Will be going 5 days a week for an hour session each day. Seemed to like it + seemed enthusiastic. Went to post-office in Held bldg + mailed Mss to Celeste. Went to second hand book store + bought “The Robe” for Winnie. Also found copy of “Saturday Island” – Whee! + “The Lost Prince,” “Peter Abelard” and a couple of others I wanted + a couple on Winnie’s list. Home at 4 and took nap. Slept like a log. Letters from Dick Kneeland + Scotty and Social Security info from Mary re Millie. Fixed steak for Mary P, Winnie + me. Winnie fixed salad. Good meal. Music Center at 8:30 – good seats + liked Cabaret even better. Mary P liked it + so did Winnie. After Annie, Moose + Fritz came to the house + so did Signe. (I left Mary Parker to ride with her + pilot.) In Signe’s [crossed out word] Dressing room an incredibly dreary lady appeared. Had been Sig’s stand in in a Demille movie “Of course I never made a name for myself” – (that was the clue) she brought up Signe’s husband, her son (“You lost him, didn’t you”) Couldn’t believe I was hearing it. Poor Signe – We had a good time at the house + Signe stayed until 2 am. Talked about a “debt to a talent” – I dig that.
