Up at 6:20 – Thanks to Dick would never have made it if it hadn’t been for him. Plane left at 7:20. Had coffee + then had breakfast at airport. Took a Ford Galaxce. + went out to Calabasses. George did my hair + I had 1/4 a manicure but she was so slow I had to leave. Met Daddy + Dick at airport at 12:20 + then into Hollywood. Several wrong turns + we got to Leon’s. Delay. Went to look for Restaurant – all closed on Saturdays Nuts! Finally wound up at Cock’n’Bull. Daddy said several times (as he’s said before) I’m so glad your Mother never lived to see me like this. I can’t walk I can’t see I can’t hear. We left Leon’s about 2:45 – with a box of cookies, bread cake etc. I was very unhappy about it. Drove downtown to Bunker hill towers + found them immediately Saw Rich An unhappy unhappy visit because he’s hard to understand + is not coordinated + Daddy can’t hear. It was awful + at one point Rich said “I wish I was dead” + Daddy concurred later – What really bugged + upset me though is that Dick went back on the sauce with a vengeance + here he was a young, healthy man – deliberately making himself – deaf, blind, unsteady + inarticulate. While in the company of two giants in medicine one who would give anything for his faculties. Had pleasant dinner with Mary + Les after – Edith Warner came over + we all went to airport
Daylight Saving over.
Timmy called Leon called – Shirley off about 10 – We lay around – Made love – ate cantelope – finally bathed + packed. Gave Scotty Leon’s cookies + said good bye about 11:30 – Got to Burbank at two + had a leisurely lunch. Lovely clear day + we both hated to leave. Met Shirley’s brother + sister-in-law – Quick flight back. Jerry + the girls there to meet Shirley. Jack came for us. A little smashed. We came home, changed + went over to J + J’s. Danny + Marge + baby Sue there. Climate a little drunk. Had some soup + came home. Ana Armando + Nelda here. Bed about 8:15 – Leon had called. Was out when we called back. My hand alot better. Letter from James Enelow – Message from Cassie House all clean. Tomorrow we diet.
Bagpipes at Burbank airport to welcome the new Irish consul.
Dick starving at 5 am – Room service at 7. Breakfast. Scott came to pick us all up at 10:20 – Went to Lookout Mt. They’re painting + the place looks great. Went over inventory with Scotty + Carolyn. Jim called with list from office. Went to Beverly Wilshire. Shirley’s appt with Helen Davis at noon Scott + Dick + I went shopping. Went to Kerr’s met Shirley in coffee shop. She has “a great Talent” – (singing, acting, speaking or writing or art) that’s frustrated! Her numbers are all 3’s – lots of money – all good. We went to Scotty’s for a book on numerology. Then to the hotel. Timmy + Nicky met us there + we went to Brown’s for a sundae then Pickwick’s. Nice afternoon. Hotel for short rest then Leon’s. Scotty, Shirley, Dick + me. Hysterically funny evening. Laughed ourselves sick. Hotel at 12:30 –
Paid Carl + Herb + Dick – they’re off Deer hunting for a few days – Will this ever be done? Went to bank + store – played machines + cleaners. Home + bathed + Packed – Ana gave me a manicure but only a little as no time. Called Anabel. Dick took me + Shirley to airport. We got to Burbank at 2:45 – Got car + drove in to town. Took Shirley to Farmer’s Market where we had coffee + shopped. Then drove in to 20th + looked at Hello Dolly set. Drove by County Museum + got out at the tar pits. Got to hotel + saw dear Scotty. Had coffee with him + then went to Leon’s for dinner. Nice, nice time. Hotel + Scotty + bar. Danced + drank + went up to some man’s room + had more to drink. He was some kind of engineer + what he made of Shirley + Scott + me I’ll never know.
Dick called from the office at 8 o’clock very drunk – hadn’t been home. I was very upset.
The situation in Jordan ghastly –
Les called around midnight to say Mary had come home. Woke up at quarter to 6 + got dressed for L.A. Bill + Jack + Dick + Armando moved all the furniture out of the den into the garage Dick took me to the airport. Rented a mustang in L.A. + drove to Calabasses. George’s shop is really nice + he did it all himself. Haircut cost $10 – the car cost $26 + the plane fare $44.00 that’s an $80 dollar haircut “But good.” Got to Leon’s office at 11:40. Waited there til 12:30 in case Les called + then went to Frascatti’s for lunch. Ate outside + had a lovely time. Leon on the front page of yesterday’s Variety Closed a deal with Martin Rackin for James Best’s script Not a great deal of money but great publicity + Best had had the script for 10 years. Leon gave me a large pkge of presents (all wrapped to mail) + I left about 2:20. Got to the airport in time for [crossed out word] an ice tea before taking the 4 o’clock plane home. Dick there to meet me. Dick Shaw + wife in town + told Dick he should go to the Master Pool Seminar in Reno. So I guess we’ll go, Oct. 8th + 9th Our phone out of order. Carl didn’t show but [crossed out letter] had left a message + I called him. He + Frank not working together but he’s got someone else + will be here tomorrow. [crossed out words] Clark + the boys came over for the wood. Made nice pile for Alice. Gifts from Leon cookies + bread + candy + another dress just like the first. I gave it to Anna as it’s too bright a red for my declining years. Watched the news – all so terrible. Had nice dinner. Early bed. Waked at one am by call from Les who had gotten Mary into the hospital + seemed to want to talk. He was thoroughly shaken + I guess it had been pretty hairy but thank God she’s in.
Up about 8:30 or 9:00. We tried to call the house but couldn’t get through. I made reservations for us on Western at 1 o’clock. Finally called Jack + Joyce who said they’d notify the girls. Cleaned up Leon’s kitchen. Had coffee + grapefruit juice with him + filled a bag full of goodies – 3 boxes of cookies, a cherry pie, a bottle of wine – candies + god knows what all else. We left at 11:20. Glorious trip to the airport until we hit the last turn off – Bumper to bumper all the way. Sightseers which just didn’t seem possible. We made the plane with no time to spare Had a bloody Mary on the plane which I thought was a mistake but blah blah blah blah. Came home + found the car which Dick had left in a 15 minute zone last night still there with only a ticket to show for it Talk about luck. On the way to the house Dick talked again about my giving up my “outside projects + concentrating on the business.” It really doesn’t seem fair at all to me. Came home + Jessie + Marty here + full of all they’d been doing. Dick went out to get a bottle of vodka + didn’t return for an hour or so. Had stopped at the Airline Bar for 3 unnecessary drinks. I gave Jess + Marty $10 to go to Circus Circus + have dinner + I took a nap. Got up about 6 + fixed a little supper Dick up later + had some soup. We sat outside with several drinks – Cooled down to 90° and a very high wind. We moved the lounges out behind the library + sat there + talked. Bot got a little hot under the collar – Dick telling me to either work in the business full time or stay out of it completely. I telling him to stop drinking so much and get down to the business of running the show. All ironed out eventually. The girls home about 10 – had loved Circus Circus + had gone to see “Airport.” Bed about midnight –
Up at 7:00 – Room service – coffee, juice + toast – Packed + took off at 8:40 + up to Lookout Mt. The house looked just great I thought + I enjoyed Carolyn + Jim. I think it’s all going to go perfectly smoothly. $250 of the monthly $350 will apply to the [crossed out word] purchase price for the next 6 mos + at the end of that time we’ll go into escrow. Asking price $37,500 which will bring me out about even. I left them at 10:45 + headed out to Mary’s. Was there in half an hour. Debby + David + I piled into the back seat + Mary + Les drove us to the races. David very entertaining. I put about $24 on Daily Doubles + $6 on the first race. Leon’s horse in the 1st + in the 2nd. Daily Double paid $81. By the time the day was over at 6:30 I was $6 ahead + I had $19 for Leon. Didn’t get to his place until almost 8 o’clock after stopping for bourbon fresca + cigarettes. Dick called at 8:30 + was angry that I hadn’t called. Jess + Marty off to see “Z.” Dick sounded a little tight – said they wouldn’t be there when I got in tomorrow morning. They were going out to the lake I said first I thought they could wait til I got in then when Dick said it would be too late I said I’d take a later plane – He got annoyed + I passed him over to Leon. Next thing I knew Leon said Dick was going to call him back if he could get a plane to L.A. Leon told me to call my horoscope number + a voice said “Partner needs ego building, encouragement.” So when Dick called back + told Leon he didn’t have time to catch the plane I grabbed the phone + told him to come on and come on he did. Was with us two hours later. Leon gave him a bit of a talking to on the basis of behaving like the boss and demanding + getting the necessary respect. The only thing that upset me was that I’d been away 2 days + it was too much. I don’t think that’s quite fair but it’s something we’ll have to work out and right now I guess Dick needs alot of support in the business.
Busy Busy Day. Dick off early. I wrote diary + made plane reservations. Paul Rogers by + talked with him about working by the hour. Later talked with Shirley. Told her to keep the $2,000.00 owed me but not to mention it. Called Alice to say I couldn’t make the “Breakfast Club” today. Called some of my interview kids. Called Jim Brown + Timmy [crossed out words] about L.A. Washed dishes. Did four or five loads of wash including yellow bedspread + green blanket. Paid Nevada Power, Mr. Mendoza + Florist bill – Mailed Alaria papers. Worked on lines all day long as I did chores. Lucky thing as the phone rang at 4 o’clock and a gay little voice said “Auntie P! Hi!? It was Jess + a friend, Marty McLeery in North Las Vegas. I was completely thrown + told her so. Had to go out + do shopping so told her not to come to the house til 5:30. Went to cleaners, Drugstore Safeway + got back by 5. Jess + friend sitting on porch swing. Told then they could stay in the den on the couches. Had to pack + get together wardrobe for L.A. Discovered my bone shoes were beyond repair + Dick who’d just come back raced me over to the B’way + bought me a new pair – perfect. Home + had a drink and a sandwich + got off somehow. As a matter of fact, felt a little better about leaving Dick with the two girls to keep him company. Met a pretty little girl on the plane named Luane Wallace. Ended up by giving her Leon’s phone number although I told her that he wasn’t taking anyone. Picked up my car – a mustang + drove to the Roosevelt. Talked to Leon + called Mary – Talked with Debby + then Mary who came in as I was about to hang up. Went down to the bar for a drink + got involved in bizarre conversations with an ex-producer, an ecologist and a merchant of sunglasses. 4 or 5 old fashioneds later, I went to bed at 1 a.m.
Wrote a letter to Timmy on the plane.
Going to L.A. Up early. Woke Daddy a little after 7 o’clock. Washed my hair + put Detective club books for Mary + Rembrand Etchings for Rich in a shopping bag. Dick took us to the airport. Newman ran a good mile after the car. Our plane on time. Evidently a tour was on it from Hawaii + it was crowded. Sat next to a nice Negro lady Mrs. Glover who mentioned rather casually having several bullets in her. Mary + Les met us. Mary looks + is great. Cool in L.A. Drove to Good Samaritan to see Rich + though his speech is most definitely affected + hard at times to understand he was alot better than we hoped. Mary + I gave him the Rembrandt book together After our visit (Daddy sat with him maybe 15 minutes) we went out to So. Babbette + had the tour of the house. It looks lovely and Mary’s garden is really impressive – every sort of flower + bush + quite a few small trees. Les + Mary took us to Charley Brown’s in the marina for lunch. The drink service was awful but Les took care of us + the food waitress was a very cute little girl who reminded both Mary + me of Debbie. We had 2 splits of champagne + drank to Mother – it would have been their 53rd anniversary. Then Les drove us all around the marina. Back to the house + then to the airport. Mary gave me a whole stack of mysteries. Our plane was late + Mary visited with us while poor Les “circled” the airport! Good good visit. Back to Vegas. Dick had bought a whole lot of patio furniture from Leisure World who went bankrupt for 730 – value $1500. Also some redwood for us. Whee. Letter from adoption people + phone bill. 2 pools sold – both good ones went to Hughes air terminal for dinner – long day. martinis!!!
Up at 5:30 – two alarm clocks set 15 min apart + a wakeup at 6. Washed hair + took off for Paramount Desilu Gower – whatever. Was there early. Nice makeup people + nice hair dresser. Martine Bartlett there playing the mother. No coffee until 7:15. On stage at 7:30 + dressed + on set by 7:45 or so. Harry Townes playing the father. All went very smoothly. Mike Caffey the director. Scenes very low key. Shared dressing room with young black actress who’s very appealing personality. Said New York is dead right now. Was finished at 10:30. Went to see Jimmy Merrick when I was through + had really nice visit with him. Showed him the article on Annie + he took her number again. Went over to the office (Leon’s) Called Annie – not there. Called Jim Brown unreachable Leon + I went to lunch at the Gaiety. I got an earlier flight home on the 4:10. Cancelled my reservation for 5:40. Hugged Leon goodbye + left with a cherry pie, a loaf of bread + candy + [crossed out letters] almond rolls. Got to the airport at 3:20. Checked in + went upstairs. At 4:40 the 4:10 flight was cancelled. Not delayed cancelled. We were given “standby” on the 5:40 but no help held out. The 5:40 didn’t leave until 8:10 however + many had dropped out so got on. Met very nice jolly lady named Anne Letty. She made the [crossed out word] wait bearable. Dick drove her to her friends on Auderella Lane. They’d (All Star) built the pool (Ming) next door! We went out to the Rockinghorse ranch for some drinks after – Strange Stories about the Diggers wanting to buy a tractor charged to Allstar (!!!) Charlene has worked out well + I guess that’s the only good news. A strike of operating engineers expected on Monday – no concrete – Oh Lord.
Wakeup at 7:00 – ordered coffee + melon for Dick. I ate his strawberries. Left at 8:20. Got to Burbank at 9 checked in the car + waited for our plane. Dick suddenly noticed he’d been charged twice for the Roosevelt garage + went to call them. While gone they announced our plane “First + Final call” – Dick no where to be seen – Everyone boarded. I had Dick paged twice they told me they couldn’t “hold the plane, madam.” Still 4 or 5 minutes before scheduled departure but I was fit to be tied by the time Dick appeared. I guess I thought too that he’d been in the bar. Which he hadn’t. Anyway I calmed down + it was an all right flight. I read Ellery Queen’s mystery magazine. Home at 10:40. House clean. Dogs happy to see us. No digging We went to bed, made love + slept til nearly four. Dick shopped for dinner. I called Magda and gave her a list of names + numbers in New York. Jimmy Judge stopped by for a while + ate most of Dick’s cookies. We pottered about the place picking up a few things here + there. Had nice steak dinner and went to be watching the Pink Jungle. Quiet recuperative day. Which is just what we both need.
Up at 5:45. Bathed dressed, coffeed + off to airport. I took makeup and book with me in overnight bag (prophetic?) Picked up Herz car in L.A. + went in to Beverly Hills to drug store for coffee and a few items. Bought appetite control wafers – Dick took me to Neil Sloane’s + drove on to El Monte. Good to see George. Nice haircut and got manicure. Took cab to Leons (funny Indian driver who’d just taken a couple to Las Vegas on Tuesday for $130.00!) Went to bank + deposited $100. Dorothy let me in office. Leon arrived a little later and had a 4:30 reading for me for a film. I said I couldn’t do it. Our plane left at 4:00. Got very depressed and said it was time I “faced” the fact I had to forget about acting blah blah. Leon upset. He called + got the appt changed to 3:00 which wasn’t any better. Dick arrived Thank God + Leon told him about the reading + he said “Great – We’ll stay overnight.” So that was that. Lunch at Frascati’s back to office + called Wendy to feed dogs. Over to Goldwyn Studios to meet Dick Berg – writer Producer of “Sheila” – Well written very contemporary film. I felt I was not “right” for the part but I did give a very good reading. (an “on the nose” reading to be sure but good.) Felt great after even though I shouldn’t get the part – We took Leon to the office + then checked in at the Roosevelt. Napped + went to Leon’s for dinner. Home to Hotel about midnight Room had refrigerator – whee. Both tired + bed immediately. (Lyn Stalmaster casting incidentally for film. Ran into Howard Morton in outer office. Magda Harout going to N.Y. for a show and I called her)
Up + called Rm Service for breakfast. Eyedrops + facial mask + washed hair. Dick a little cranky Got to the studio in plenty of time. The wig a great success. Wore new orange dress which was my favorite anyway. Nice girl playing the other secretary. Her first “acting” part – all mildly depressing but I had a good time. Dear prop man – Bob McLaughlin. Camera man Dave – Makeup Gene. Wasn’t through til 3:30. Saw Caro Jones who won’t ever use me for anything – that was my impression – the 2 lines were a sop to Leon! Took a cab back to the hotel. Cute young driver – faintly hippie who kept saying “that’s wild” re the studio, my being in theatrical makeup etc. Dick had gone out to U.I. with Leon today to lunch + all over. We napped, made love + went to Leons for a snack before catching our 8:30 plane which was an hour late. Hated to leave Leon tonight he seemed more vulnerable than usual. Also we’d crowded too much into too little time. Got into Vegas at 10:30 + went to the Safeway. Saw Elliot as we shopped for the party. Bought all the meatball + salad ingredients + bread etc. Left the mix + chips for tomorrow. Home by 11:30. Had a nightcap + went to bed.
Took 2:05 flight to Burbank. Called [crossed out word] General Service + don’t have to go in til tomorrow. Checked in at Roosevelt Hotel Made a few calls – The Browns who still don’t have a stove, Bill + Leon. We called Room service + had some fruit + cheese + coffee + a split of wine sent up. napped + dressed + took off for Leons for dinner. Picked him up at his office. Cold cuts which was perfect. Two loaves of bread, a blueberry pie, a sweater + a box of cookies went with us to the theatre “Blythe Spirit” a disappointment but very hard to say where the fault lay. Was very disappointed in Howard Morton who can be so brilliant. Zsa-Zsa looked lovely but of course she’s the Main problem #1! The play is dated + the proscenium is in the way. We had drinks with Bill after + talked a little about how one’s theatrical perspective changes without one’s even noticing. odd. Went back to the hotel + had 2 more drinks + danced. Bed at two which wasn’t too bright with an 8:15 call.
Paid a few bills –
Oh dear – what a day. Stiff from floor! Called Timmy to say goodbye + Dick made a few calls about the appliances – or parts. We drove down to East Olympic (almost Anaheim) and got a new mercury shut off valve at the Tappan warehouse. (Had taken old one with us). Came home + Dick installed it. No luck. Nothing happened. Bad moment. Then Dick decided it had to be the electric thermostat. No telephone by then so we looked up a nearer appliance parts place where he thought he could test it. Took it out making diagrams of the wires – went to place. No help but they thought he was right in theory. Back to Tappan warehouse. Very hot day. Back to lookout Mt. Almost 120 miles for parts! Dick put in new thermostat + also new glass panel. No luck. Hideous moment + then suddenly on came the gas! We tried it over + over + after a few false starts it began to light with some semblance of regularity. Meanwhile I was packing the car + last minute cleaning. We left at 4:15. Almost to the bottom of the canyon when [crossed out letters] Dick couldn’t remember whether or not he’d left the oven on!!! Horrendous moment. Turned around + went back. Oven off. Up Laurel Canyon at 4:40 – just fractions ahead of the rush hour mainstream. Got a map on Ventura Blvd + went the Northern route. I drove from near New Hall to Barstow while Dick slept alot of the time. We ate in Beautiful Barstow at the Holiday Inn nothing to recommend it. Dick drove the rest of the way home + I dozed. Stopped at the State line to call Jack + Joyce but the dial was off the phone!!! Got to Vegas at 10:15 + went by their place but all lights out so came home. Place a mess. Dick had never made the bed since I left 10 days ago. He told me this morning which bugged me – Had a letter from Seth with check for 240.00. Now the roof leaking!! Letters from Annie (funny) Judy Mullen. Cotton, a few bills – We had a night cap + went to bed –
