Was wakened by call from Liza at 9:15. She’d called at 7:30 but we hadn’t heard it + the service had picked up. She was on her way. Oh dear. I felt badly at having screwed up. I felt badly period – Slept a little longer + then woke to the music of lawn mower – rrrghchug – came wandering out to kitchen + found George + Phil + Leo sitting in the kitchen with Dick playing Mine Host + serving up drinks – at 11:00 am. I was a little irritated. Phil took the cherry pie + the cheesecake for his children + he + Leo left about noon. George stayed on a little + Dick poured him a really stiff drink despite his protests so I took half of it. George left at 1 o’clock. Lovely mail. A really beautiful letter from Margie + one from Sue. Both telling me “Don’t tell Mom where we are” – Sad. A card from Moose in Philadelphia. They’re closing there in 2 weeks. We decided to call Annie. Did + told her I’d get Cassie to get in touch with her. She said Fritz would be out here Sunday + Monday with script for “By Jupiter” She’s coming west as soon as show closes. Whee. We then tried to get Cassie but no answer. Tried her at Alma’s + spoke with Alma but Cassie not there. We called Drue + Dick to say Hello. They were off to Maine this Wednesday. We decided to lie down around 4:30 or so + slept about 5 hours. Dick woke up + asked me if I’d like some Chinese food. I said I’d love it + went back to sleep. Woke up at 1 am. Bed empty. No Dick. I panicked. Found him in the kitchen – really blotto. fooling with his transistor which has never worked. He’d gone back to the horseshoe to get his car + had gambled + lost. Had stopped at Frankie’s on the way back Oh dear – Oh dear. Tomorrow he said “he’s going on the wagon”
Up early. Dick off to work. I did laundry-type things, paid garbage bill, power bill + sent in S.A.G. ballot. Started a Halloween square Liza called at 8:30 and I went to meet her + John + Courtney at Bob’s Big Boy. Liza had 3 cats + Gundy in the back of the station wagon + was looking for a kennel so we took them to Pet Town. John’s Carmen Ghia wouldn’t start so I called Jimmy Judge who came over like a flash. They took the car to a friend of Jimmy’s who got it started in no time. Then Liza + John + baby came to the house. They made a few calls. Liza + I went off for the afternoon leaving John at the motel with Courtney. Had decided to do the next lap at night as the heat is unbearable. We went to Circus, Circus + then had lunch at the Purira [?]+ played a little Keno. Then over to Caesar’s Palace which as Liza said is pure “kitsch.” Paid for the Boy’s in the Band” tickets Dropped Liza off at the motel. Went to the bank + stopped by Vegas Village but prints still not ready. We showered + futzed about a bit + then went to pick Liza + John up + took them to the Villa d’Este for a really very good dinner. Dick treating. Then we drove them through Casino Center + back to the motel. John taking off. I made arrangement to meet Liza at 7:30. We decided to go gambling – alack – + went to the Horseshoe. Lost then to Fremont where I cashed a $200 N.Y. check + lost. (actually I was winning but not much + Dick was losing). Next stop Castaways – $300.00 check. Hacienda another $300.00. Worst was – no money in bank. Dick left the Hacienda + went to Frank’s. Borrowed a $130 + made about $90. We took a cab home at 5:30 am. Dick wanted to go by Frank’s but fell asleep so we came home. 6 am. I took a no-doz.
Dick left without waking me today. I woke at [crossed out letter] 6:40 + no Dick. Started the day off badly for me which was odd. I called Colby to wish her Happy Birthday + we had a nice chat + then I called Chuck Neighbors about xeroxing (that’s his idea) + he told me they have a lighter xerox paper now so it’s fine by me. It’s going to cost under $200 for 3 copies and that’s just great. He said he’d been seeing Mary Parker + that she’d changed – become very aggressive etc. Not all for the good. “Needs a man.” It’s too bad because I don’t think she’ll find one this way. (I’m in complete agreement from the little I saw). I wrote a birthday card to Anthony with $10 and I wrote a letter to Moose. Paid the rent Called Belle Davis at Tropicana pools + asked her to have Dick call home. At about that point I bogged down. Spent the morning reading + finishing the Shirley Jackson books that Annie sent. Really good + very interesting on the subject of writing. Dolores Quinlan called which was really a lovely surprise. Was in town seeing a friend + will be back within a month or so. I asked her to call the yarn dept for me at the May Co. + check on that order to finish Bill’s sweater. All I need to do is sew up the facings + knit the collar. I finished the first of a 2nd pair of socks. Dick called around 2 + I told him how unhappy I was when I woke up + he was gone. I went to the P.O. + mailed letters + Moose’s pke. Then went to the Panorama mkt + put $10 more in the slot machine Came back + took a nap. Was asleep less than 20 minutes when Dick arrived with flowers. Lovely white roses. It’s the first time he ever brought anyone flowers!!! They’re just beautiful. He worked on some plans for Gene Wright + then took them over but Gene was gone. I had a diet dinner + fixed him some beef stroganoff. I’ve been pretty good on the diet now for [crossed out letter] 14 days + am down to 124. About 7 lbs from the beginning. 7 more to go. Liza called after dinner – will be driving through with Courtney in early July. There’s some trouble between her + John. He’s gone on the Wagon after beating her up while drunk. Liquor can be such a menace. With us it’s just a huge waste + source of verbal disagreement + that’s bad enough. But at least we’re getting along better + better.
Day began with a special delivery letter from Bill asking if the 18th St. Apt. was still mine (not since ’65) and could he stay there + wanted “constructive suggestions” What I think he really wants is more money but I’m going to stick at $350. That’s $85 a week without taxes. I wrote Sue a very long letter and I wrote Jack Underwood + sent him the legal descriptions of Leon’s Palm Springs property. I wrote Cotton + sent her $10.00 for her birthday + I wrote Jim Parker + Liza who wrote today to “Mrs Patience Cleveland Something.” Her mother + Dick were in a bad auto accident with concussions + fractured sculls etc. Liza was back there for a while + no sooner got back to L.A. than her mother had a stroke. Good God. Dick was home early + had a nap. Irene came over at 1:30 to get the key to the house and we had a very nice visit. She’s a really good woman. And I like her alot. Dick was back about 3:30 We took a nap + then I fixed the knockwurst that Leon gave me. We had 4 bottles of wine on the theory that we won’t be having any for a while?? Not too sure what sense it makes but we felt like it. We called Drue + asked her to make reservations at the Chelsea for us and for “Great White Hope.” She told us Scotty had been sick + had had a good job fall through simultaneously. There was a horrendous fight down the street with crashes + a child yelling + every dog in the neighborhood but ours adding to the din. I think it was the lady that reported the puppies to the pound. We’re leaving tomorrow night + it doesn’t seem possible. Lester called this morning to change our luncheon date.
Started on Christmas cards today. Didn’t get too far but at least I started. I picked up my sheets from Iva Wallich. The lamps not ready. Liza called + I invited her + John to dinner. I paid American Express including Peter’s dues. Paid John Roberts + sent some money to the St. Labre Indian School. Liza + John were bringing Aldo Ray but he got called out of town + couldn’t come. I was glad. They brought Courtney in large wicker basket. I called Dick before they came. Dogs a bit leery of baby. We didn’t eat til 10:20. Liza kept saying “I never get out. Let’s have another drink.” Really gay evening with fire. Gave Liza the rest of the Shepard’s pie. We made plans for Mexico which I didn’t remember. They left at midnight + I called Dick which I didn’t remember. I went to sleep on the couch. (Didn’t feel I ought to leave the fire – ho ho.)
[crossed out words] Courtney Elizabeth Terry born today – Diet
Up at 7. Winnie down at 7:30. Seventh day on diet. I took Winnie to Pat Walker’s at 8:30. Went to get Bess + had steam + massage. Picked up Winnie + came home. Sunny day. Rae here. Trouble with the machine + they’re bringing a new one tomorrow. Got things together to go to beach. Winnie came downstairs in her bathing suit complained that it was getting “baggy.” I told her it was because she was getting thin. She said but it looks awful it’s all baggy. I got very peeved. She has got to start looking at things a little more positively. I said so but was in a foul humor from then on. We picked up Annie tried to put the top down. Had to go to a VW place for help that didn’t improve my humor. Annie did (improve it) Drove out + doubled back thru Malibu Canyon. Too much sun for all. Winnie very red. Humbug miserable at beach. Wouldn’t go near the water this time. Left at 4. Didn’t look at script which added to my foul mood + nobody’s fault but mine of course. Came home + took nap from 4:20 to almost 7. No mail came. We had dinner and then I began to work on script. Copied it all down. Winnie cued me through a couple of times. Leon called with my call – 7 am tomorrow and shooting schedule. Mostly in + out shots. Winnie taking the bus to Pat Walker’s tomorrow. She went to bed about 11 o’clock I went up + saw Mary P + had a furtive beer. then came down + went to bed. Wakeup call for 5 am. Called Bob Iverson + changed appt. or rather, cancelled. Til next week. John Terry called + Liza had a little girl, Courtney Elizabeth – 6 lbs 14 oz at 3:35 this afternoon. How nice.
Up early. Went to get Bess + then had steam + massage. Home. Called Annie. Invited her + Joe + Moose + Fritz to dinner if the strike still on by this evening which it was. Lay in the sun a little + read more of Carry Nation. Called Liza with the Boeuf Bourgignon recipe + asked her more about her talk with Peter that time. And whether she’d talked about how unhappy she was. Which I remembered also Peter had told me. She hadn’t. But she said she probably had said something about my getting pregnant. I spoke with Mary C. who read me Margaret Harford’s review in the Times and told me it was a “rave.” As she read it out loud it became apparent that Margaret Harford didn’t say anything at all. Just recapped the plot that was some comfort. The four girls arrive Friday for the summer. Leon called + asked me to come to the office at 10:30 tomorrow. I bought 2 gorgeous steaks, string beans, salad making strawberries + sour cream. Annie + gang arrived about 8:20. Moose + Fritz put my license plates on the car. Mary Parker + Annie off to get some charcoal. We had drinks + sat in the kitchen – good time _ then had dinner. All very informal + very funny. I got started on storytelling again – as on Saturday. I miss the sort of N.Y. Theatre group evenings obviously. Everyone left at 11:30 or so. Mary P. up to bed and I retired too with wakeup call for 8 o’clock.
Up at 9. Left eye still sore. Made coffee – puttered called Daddy to wish him Happy Fathers Day – nice chat. He sounded pretty good. Jimmy was there + I talked with him too. Hilary expecting momentarily – earlier than we’d thought. Spoke with Timmy and Mary who was feeling a little depressed. Told her I’d be in all day if she wanted to come over. Called Bess Gray + told her what had happened yesterday. Went back to bed for a bit. Up again talked with Liza – Peter had told her after one of our dinners that he had a “mistress” – She asked if I knew – he said no. She asked if he paid her bills + he said no it was just someone he saw 2 or 3 times a week. She asked if he were really in love with her + he said NO. He told Liza that he was unable to get aroused with me and that he could with this girl but that it wasn’t all that good either. I remembered the night that Liza + he had talked so long outside by her car + I’d been furious with Liza. I looked it up in my diary and it was March 8th!! Peter had told me that Liza had asked why I wasn’t pregnant + I’d written “The Little Bitch” I wonder now if she did + will ask her. I also think that Peter must have wanted Liza to tell me about his “Mistress” or why take the trouble to tell her when he got so annoyed by her? If we could only have talked on some sort of straight human level + if we could have seen Dr. Brooks or Bob Iverson together maybe we could have had some kind of decent relationship. Mary Parker asked me later if I wouldn’t still have married Peter. [crossed out letters] even if I’d thought we were going to be divorced and I said and I think it’s true – NO. But maybe I felt pressured by the fact that I’d told everyone we were going to get married. I really don’t know. But re-reading that damn diary I think Peter put me through alot of unnecessary agony.
Mary Cleveland over in the afternoon with her tape recorder + knitting. Pleasant quiet visit. Leon called and Mary was right here when he asked if she’d like to come to the theatre tomorrow night. I asked her + she said yes. I have my qualms about family + business but Mary’s in good shape + I trust Leon. Mary Parker + I went to Timmy’s for dinner – he leaves at 7:30 tomorrow. We left early – home and had a beer + then bed
Millie came by bus which was great as I could sleep a little longer. Discovered from my check book I only have $690.00 at the moment in my N.Y. acct so will give Leon the money in 2 installments of $500.00. Left the house at 10 o’clock. Sat around Leon’s office for a bit. Then went to see Bob Palmer at [crossed out letters] MPO. good visit. Left a picture at Jessica Overweiss’s. Went by Leon’s liquor store Hazins and got a bottle of bourbon for tonight. We had lunch at the Gaiety. Peter had been called for a job + hadn’t returned Leon’s call. I got Leon to find out from S.A.G. the name of Peter’s new agent. It’s Alex Brewis. I left pictures and a note at Maxine Anderson’s and then came home. Stopped at Bonetell’s + paid for Mary’s corsage and at the bank to cash a check. Got out of my suit + into a shift. Millie washed the kitchen curtains. I took her home at 4:30. Came back + took a quick nap. Called Lyle and we’ll be starting work shortly on the U.C.L.A. program for Lake Arrowhead. He’s leaving the Music center in 2 weeks. Drove out to Liza + John’s new place. very nice – small + well laid out and a lovely garden. Tom Williams my date. I’d met him several times before + found him amusing but not much more. Changed my opinion. He’s a very bright guy. Georgia + Bob Miller there. Liza due in 2 weeks. Round as can be. But looking marvelous. Very pleasant evening. Liza at one point told me there had been another
girl woman in Peter’s life. I have to ask her about it again as it all very hazy. I spent the night there as did Tom – neither of us in a condition to drive.
Slept til almost eleven – . Went to the Erdmans + had coffee + croissant. Went over Sharon’s teaching material with her. Am going to go with her + two other women Wednesday morning for 3 hours to try it. Should be interesting. The house when I got back full of Paul’s relatives + he + Mary much the worse for wear. Fred Sterley (?) came over at 2 o’clock for coffee. A nice quiet man. Had been a Bobby in London during the war. Seems to miss his wife who died some 4 yers ago of heart trouble. He drove me over to the Good Samaritan to leave a book for Dr. Ware. Left about five thirty + asked if he might take me out to dinner sometime. As he’s going back to England fairly soon it didn’t seem too involving to say yes. I took a nap. Then ate some cottage cheese and read my brand new Agatha Christie – “Third Girl.” She certainly holds up well. During the day read more old letters. Strange to go over them. Bed about one.
Liza called with new address. Baby due in 5 weeks.
Up at 7:00 – Bess called + said her 9 o’clock was coming in later so I didn’t pick her up til 8:30 – steam + massage made appt. for Tuesday. Went to Boneshells + sent flowers to Bert + Barbara Remsen + Doug + Joan Forde. I’d called Doug yesterday and Mona told me he was out with the flu. I came home + did small futzy things. Paid Smith Club dues, Double day bookshop, packed mysteries for Carl + Sue and finally wrote a note to Jay Rhodebeck + sent a copy of “The Lion Is Busy.” Rita not feeling too well. Helen Davis, the psychic friend of Leon, called + was unable to suggest a healer. Did recommend a book called “Thunder in the Silence” – talked about life being a “crumb in in the bucket”?? Nice but very brusk. Tried to call “Rev. Robert and got a very peculiar woman who was also pretty damn rude. Finished by saying “Maybe she’s in the unknown.” I called Albert and he tried the number too with the same results. Said the voice was not Rev. Roberts + that he’d make inquiries. I took a nap and then went shopping. Liza arrived as I got back. Looks marvelous. very funny. Rita not feeling well enough to come downstairs. So I took her dinner up to her. Liza pretty overwhelming. She drank the most extraordinary amount. I tried to keep up and by the end of the evening was crocked. Tried to get Liza to spend the night rather than drive home but she said she was fine + took off. She must have a sort of miracle metabolism. Said I’m going to be the baby’s godmother which pleased me alot. She + John going to start a gallery in Colorado. Interesting idea + seems sound.
Up early – unemployment. Saw Harlan Wade – Picked up Bess + took her to work – Steam + massage. Went shopping afterward. Bought an eye of round + tuna etc for lunch. Came home + fixed lunch for Liza – very pleasant visit. She loved the Night Before Christmas which did alot for my ego – All excited about being pregnant which I would be too. The hour flew + she was off – We hardly touched on any difficulties which was just right. I invited Mary + Paul to join us for dinner – Didn’t know what to do with the eye round so made it a pot roast. I felt a definite touch of the pip or something in late afternoon – grinding stomach pains etc. etc. blah blah or – as Mary Parker says rap rap .. Made luncheon date with Timmy + appt for manicure. Zucchini Yellow summer squash casserole, baked potatos, mushrooms + roast. Was very irritated with Peter during dinner for some statements about Annie Sullivan + why she likes being a stage manager – “She enjoys the back biting atmosphere” – What presumptuous rot. I said so in slightly modified terms. Bed fairly early. Visited with Mary + Paul.
Utterly last but pleasant day – I worked on christmas verses a la Timmy + got quite carried away. May make it a whole project “Trusty knight beef or crispies/ end altruist hows/ no decree churlish sterling/ no tea venom mouse/.” Did lots of them but have decided to do the whole night before Christmas. Mary Parker decided to take Emma to Akron and I went with them + found one or 2 gifts plus a book of xmas carols + the N. Before C. Next stop Safeway where I got some hamburger. Came home + stewed tomatos for dinner. Unfroze onion [crossed out word] rings – pretty uck [crossed out letters] went for a short walk after with Emma, Paul + Humbug + came home just in time to talk to Liza who called. She is coming for lunch on Tuesday + told me she was worried about Peter. “He sounded as if he were at death’s door” etc. etc. I told her I didn’t want to discuss it and that I wouldn’t discuss it on Tuesday either which stopped her a little but it may get a bit thick nonetheless. I told Peter. Liza said she didn’t think his analyst was helping him + [crossed out letter] He said “Fuck Liza” which doesn’t really belie her charge – Had coffee upstairs + then came down + bathed + watched Mission Impossible” – Bed at 11:20
Up early – about 7:30 – unpacked one of the boxes I’d sent from New London, went to the store to shop. Called Elizabeth – must be away. I read a New Yorker profile on Joe Levine because Peter gave it to me to read. Turned out he hadn’t read it himself but the effort wasn’t wasted as I found out that George Gonneau is the Paris Representative (Embassy pictures) + in charge of all dubbing. How great! I didn’t take any equanil today + got by all right – in a dumb, numb way. Can’t believe [crossed out letter] we’re living this way. I paid Hayes, deposited $300 in our [crossed out word] household acct + $500 in my checking acct. Sent money to Carl + wrote notes to Norman + Miriam + Rosemary Stubbs. Went up + visited briefly with Mary + Paul. Paul gave me a god-awful script called “The Wolf Pack” to read. Did out in the patio in the sun. Peter out at 2:30 – I made a large pile of clothes for Goodwill, unpacked my gray suitcase, made a pkge of detective stories for Carl + Sue, fixed a meatloaf for dinner + pottered about trying to make dents in my office and among my clothes. Appalling amount to be done. Called Don Schwartz + woke him so told him I’d call him again tomorrow. From his tone it sounds as though Peter’s little scenes with him may have queered my relationship with him. At the moment I couldn’t care less. It all seems so incredibly stupid. Peter home at 7:40 – Dinner at 8 – He told a joke. I wrote Daddy a letter + then I guess Peter did too. I went to bed at 10:00. Oh yes – Liza called. She’s married again + is now Mrs. John Lerry. If she’s glad, I’m glad + she did sound glad.
Really busy day. Went to MPO on Seward for another “Cheek to Cheek” commercial. Saw Marge Benson-told her about Izzy’s good fortune. Read well but not brilliantly + came home. Peter asleep. Fixed bitke. Called Timmy to invite him tonight. Called Arthur to tell him we were having other guests. Called George Spicer for a hair appt. Called Izzy to say crossed out writing] Peter’d pick her up around 7 o’clock. Peter’s appointment at 2:30-also at MPO-went to the club after. I fixed the Bitke sauce, the salad, made the beef + cleaned up the house. Sent for the Campbell’s cookbook “Cooking with Soup”-only 50¢. Emptied the garbage + got pretty well tired out. Called Mother + Daddy to say we’d be down either tomorrow or Friday + would telegraph tomorrow. Went out for a few minutes to the store + checked the service on returning. Of all people Paul Glidewell-the legendary-had called Leon Lance + left a number. When Peter came in he called it-Peter in Rancho Santa Fe but coming in town tonight with Italian girlfriend. Leaving tomorrow so no choice but ask him over. At this point things got hectic beyond control. I took a Miltown-Peter went to get Izzy who came back prepared to spend the night. Timmy came next + then Arthur unbelievably once again (only twice even + Arthur there both times) I burned the bitke. Emptied pot. Washed + scraped it + put Bitke back-unnoticeable altho Arthur discovered me in the process. Liza called + asked if she could come over as Hugh was out. Told her we had guests + were just about to sit down to dinner. She said she hadn’t eaten + was there enough? What the hell could I say. So she came too + proceeded to monopolize the conversation + then to sing-As Arthur said a little bleakly “she’s very stiff competition.” Arthur + Timmy left as the Glidewell party of four drew up around midnight. Paul, his girlfriend Gabriella who speaks not one word of English, his son Ernie + Ernie’s wife Sherry. I tried to cope with Gabriella + we did surprisingly (over) [continued on March 9, 1967…]
