Dick called at 1:30 this morning to say he was driving down with the barstools. He’d had too much to drink at Jack + Joyce’s + gone to Frank’s bar where he’d fallen asleep. The place was held up by a man with a 38 who’d taken everyone’s wallet in the place except Dick’s who “looked like a bum.” He had a 600 dollars on him. I didn’t sleep very well after that kept waking. Dick arrived around ten. We made love + then he went to sleep and I went to get Leon for errands. Took him to his barber while I shopped + then we went to Ma Gordons on Fairfax + had a sandwich. Odd day – looked like snow. Stopped at Hugo’s + then Leon’s office + I took him home. Dick still asleep which wasn’t surprising. I’d tried to reach Timmy but couldn’t get him. He finally called + was a wee bit miffed but on the whole genial. He gave Dick the number of his dentist, Dr. Franks whom Dick will call from Las Vegas. I was in an edgy sort of mood. I’d blurted out in the morning that we had to talk as we had problems + he kept saying all right let’s talk + I couldn’t – I fixed dinner + then we did talk a little about drinking etc. We went over to Mary’s to pick up my Christmas tree. A lovely little living tree in a [crossed out word] rosewood box filed with cedar chips. We had 2 drinks and a funny visit with Mary + Les + then came home. Too late for Dick to be hungry which is something I’ll have to remember. We ate by the fire with wine + talked alot and I was glad he’d come.
Pain in rib really bad. Probably because the face was less so. Called Doug. More darvon. Henry drove me back in. We stopped for 15 minutes at St. John’s to see Mona. Henry met Brenda + Michael + then left. I napped. Called Peter again + left a message. Paul over around two. Lit the gas in the apartment ice box. We chatted. He left + I napped. Annie called. [crossed out letters] said I’d try to get up there next weekend. Talked with Rae O’dell + Doug Menville. Went to Timmy’s for dinner and had a nice time. Dogs with me. Then drove out to Mary’s. Got there about 10:30. Les [crossed out letters] there. Read some Erle Stanley Gardner + went to bed. Dogs with me on narrow bed.
Millie came at 9. I mailed letter + journal to Anne and a package of detective stories to Carl + Sue. Had lunch at the Cock’n’Bull with Neil Burkhardt. Gee he’s a nice guy and I’m really so delighted that he’s handling Rita’s writing. I think she would have liked him so much. After I went to visit Henry and we played a rather hurried game of anagrams – My first I don’t have the knack. Went shopping, took Millie home and came back + took a nap before getting things ready for Mary + Les, David + Debbie, Sue + Mike and the twins and a friend. Had the most enormous steak. Told Mary about Newcomb and Anne and she was of course distressed. Told her I was going to Vegas next weekend and she asked if she could come too. I said of course + she was actually able to get a reservation. It was a pleasant evening although Abby [crossed out letter] was a little left out by Patsy and her friend. Have so many things I’ve been meaning to do and just don’t seem to get around to them. Tired and bed fairly early.
Special delivery card from Nicky Korda asking if he could stay at the house tomorrow night thru tues.
R.F.K. Died at 1:44 AM.
Up around 10:30 or so. Gathered together some poems and things. “Come Home Bringing me Laughter” etc. to take to Bob Inverson. Got all dressed up to make rounds with Leon. Went to his office at 1:30. Listened to the radio en route. The plane taking Kennedy home left L.A. at around 1:30. Jackie + Ethel + Ted Kennedy + the 3 oldest children all aboard. Crowds + crowds of people there. Tribute yes. But oh the curiosity mongers – Leon + I went to the Stalmaster office. Nobody there. Then to see Marge Benson. Met Fred Roos + had the feeling I may have done a little business there. Saw Eddie Foy Jr. who’s moved over from Screen Gems. Took Leon back to the office + went out to the Palisades. Had a very encouraging session with Bob. First we talked about the events of the last few days + I told him about taking James over to Harvard + my feelings there. Also about the depression with the new car. Decided it was a “can’t go back” feeling I am finished with the $75.00 cars forever. I am a grownup woman with enough money to do as I please + I’d better get used to it. The encouraging part was when I showed him some of my early poems and he seemed to genuinely like them aside from finding them a source of “interest.” He asked to take them home. He also took “Come Home” – I told him it was like giving him homework but he said “I suggested it” – Somehow it made me feel like trying to write something again – I am so indebted to Bob – if I could get over my writing block it would be just incredibly wonderful. The Knight Beef or Crisp Moss – is fun but in fact it’s an utter abnegation of commitment. I saw Doug after + we had coffee + talked. Then over to Pelham for dinner with Mary + Jim. Millie had made fried chicken + lemon meringue pie. Mary in great shape. [crossed out word] Jim went out after dinner + we played cards. Les came over briefly. A long evening. but good until the end when Jim had come back + he managed to upset Mary. I think I stayed too late or it might not have happened. Came home + reread alot of my early stuff
Newcomb up pretty early. I fixed us breakfast. Jim Parker came over and the three of us went down to see The Watts Towers. Am so glad we did as Newcomb was fascinated. Jim on the way back told Newcomb he was basically a hippie which Newcomb didn’t realize was a great compliment. Got back to the house. Mary had called earlier + was drunk + hung up on Newcomb. Then called again + [crossed out word] spoke with me. Still sounded pretty bad but slightly more sober. I’d had a message from Benito to call Eddie Weston + did. We are lucky not to all be drummed out of Equity with the number of infractions. Benito incidentally is not even a member. Newcomb brought us hamburgers for lunch. Then he went out + drove around to look at some of the construction going on + pick up a few extra groceries. Mary called while he was gone about a letter from James. Then Les called + I told him I’d like to get the car when I came back from trip (which I still don’t know when it will be!) Told him to use his judgement on bringing Mary to the party and not to feel it was necessary to come. Felt better about the situation after speaking to him. Newcomb came home + called her then went out + bought me 3 more bottles of booze. We both got changed + washed up. I’d ordered flowers from Bonestells and they looked lovely. Liza + John the first to arrive – bringing a giant bundle of flowers from their garden which had to be arranged Liza thank god did it. Henry Jones came + Bill Tregoe + Lyle and the Erdmans + Mary + Paul and we all had drinks. Mary + Les arrived after 8 + somehow Mary was held together + even looked pretty nice. Henry Jones’ son arrived back from Vietnam in the midst of the party + called from Oakland. So exciting. Mary made an exit by reading her Martin Luther King poem + Dick Erdman stopped her. Was glad not to have been in the room. Sharon may be able to use me in a reading teaching program which sounds fascinating – Dick also said he might have a part for me in a film. Liza + John + Bill stayed until 4:30 – Mary + Paul up at 2:30 – Mary helped me clean. Party seemed very successful.
Up early. Picked up Bess + took her to work. Went to unemployment + then to The Big Party. Bought plates + napkins + cups + some pretty paper trees for the table tonight. Also some flower garlands for Hilary. Had a massage + steam + then went shopping. Bought Bitke + salad fixings + ice cream + cake + french bread + some perfume for the six girls. Came home and made the bitke + got everything ready. Mary Parker helped me set up the table + clean up a bit. Raining. The children with Sue driving were late. Loren the original cause of their lateness arrived before Sue who was driving + got lost a friend brought her. Mary + Les came right after. The dinner was a great success but I felt a terrible strain as though everyone were trying not to let it be at all emotional. Loren + Lisa were outside of that aspect of course + I think had an uncomplicatedly nice time. But I was in tears when they’d left. Stood on the porch to wave them off + heard Patsy say to Mary, “we’ll write” and it seemed too awful to bear. Peter home a half hour later, had eaten + went straight to bed after calling his broker Jerry Dale. Jerry Dale had called earlier + when he asked for Peter Hobbes + I said he wasn’t in he said “Is he staying out tonight or do you expect him in?” which seemed very strange. Paul in a foul mood because of two bad appointments + Mary + he were addressing cards for her show’s opening Sunday night. Peggy Pope called I’m going to see her play Saturday afternoon – invited her to dinner afterward

Up early – went to pick up Bess + then had steam, massage and a facial. Must say I loved the latter + may become addicted. Did a little shopping. Tom Larson who seems a very humorless type came + picked up a copy of Lion – It could have been my mood. Three letters from Rita – one with a letter to be sent on to S.J. Haught + lots of advice to me + one with poems + questions about an osterizer + one to say she couldn’t come after all! I washed my hair + shaved my legs etc, + got all dressed up + made up + went out to Mary’s at 5:30 for Thanksgiving dinner. Les there + seems very attractive – Liz Warner + Edith + Debbie + David + the four girls. Margie was delighted with her watch. Don’t think I could have found a better present if I’d tried. We’d just sat down to dinner when the phone rang + it was Peter for me – I took it in the other room + he said he didn’t feel well + had decided not to come tonight. [crossed out letters] When I said that made me very unhappy he said Why. Aw hell. I came back to the table very upset but I think I hid it + then told Mary privately I had to pick up Peter as his car had broken down. I came home to see if I could get Peter to change his mind. He wasn’t here. I took a miltown. Had thought of not going myself + then decided that would be just plain dumb. Got to the Director’s Guild about 8:20 – At first didn’t see anyone I knew then saw Lew + Jill + Karen + Jason. Glimpse of Norman Stuart + his mother + Nelson Olmstead + Mike Moschella Was terribly disappointed personally as anything I did was cut to ribbons + I might just as well not have been in it. Had coffee with Lew + Jill afterward. Came home. Peter asleep. I went upstairs + had beer with Mary + Paul. Bed about 3 am – So unhappy.
