Up at 6:20 – Thanks to Dick would never have made it if it hadn’t been for him. Plane left at 7:20. Had coffee + then had breakfast at airport. Took a Ford Galaxce. + went out to Calabasses. George did my hair + I had 1/4 a manicure but she was so slow I had to leave. Met Daddy + Dick at airport at 12:20 + then into Hollywood. Several wrong turns + we got to Leon’s. Delay. Went to look for Restaurant – all closed on Saturdays Nuts! Finally wound up at Cock’n’Bull. Daddy said several times (as he’s said before) I’m so glad your Mother never lived to see me like this. I can’t walk I can’t see I can’t hear. We left Leon’s about 2:45 – with a box of cookies, bread cake etc. I was very unhappy about it. Drove downtown to Bunker hill towers + found them immediately Saw Rich An unhappy unhappy visit because he’s hard to understand + is not coordinated + Daddy can’t hear. It was awful + at one point Rich said “I wish I was dead” + Daddy concurred later – What really bugged + upset me though is that Dick went back on the sauce with a vengeance + here he was a young, healthy man – deliberately making himself – deaf, blind, unsteady + inarticulate. While in the company of two giants in medicine one who would give anything for his faculties. Had pleasant dinner with Mary + Les after – Edith Warner came over + we all went to airport
Call at 5 – The coffee a godsend. Drove to the studio in pouring rain + pitch dark. Shared a trailer with Adele Claire My part infinitesimal but she had no lines at all. Wore blue chiffon. Bob Christianson the wardrobe man. Danced with John Howard + John Forsythe Stepped on all feet. Leon came over with Bob Kennealy. Leon + I went back to the Roosevelt, I packed + checked out. We went to his office + had lunch at Frascatti’s. Then I did a few cards in his office, changed reservation to 9:30 called Dick. Left at 4:45 for Mary’s. Got there about 5:45. Patsy + Abby there looking very tall + dear. Mary in great shape + Les too. Had a good, good time Lamb dinner. Left for airport at 8:20 + got lost. Then couldn’t find Avis return. Made the plane with only minutes to spare. Dick met me with the news Annie had had a fire in her house + is coming tomorrow night. Good God!
The situation in Jordan ghastly –
Les called around midnight to say Mary had come home. Woke up at quarter to 6 + got dressed for L.A. Bill + Jack + Dick + Armando moved all the furniture out of the den into the garage Dick took me to the airport. Rented a mustang in L.A. + drove to Calabasses. George’s shop is really nice + he did it all himself. Haircut cost $10 – the car cost $26 + the plane fare $44.00 that’s an $80 dollar haircut “But good.” Got to Leon’s office at 11:40. Waited there til 12:30 in case Les called + then went to Frascatti’s for lunch. Ate outside + had a lovely time. Leon on the front page of yesterday’s Variety Closed a deal with Martin Rackin for James Best’s script Not a great deal of money but great publicity + Best had had the script for 10 years. Leon gave me a large pkge of presents (all wrapped to mail) + I left about 2:20. Got to the airport in time for [crossed out word] an ice tea before taking the 4 o’clock plane home. Dick there to meet me. Dick Shaw + wife in town + told Dick he should go to the Master Pool Seminar in Reno. So I guess we’ll go, Oct. 8th + 9th Our phone out of order. Carl didn’t show but [crossed out letter] had left a message + I called him. He + Frank not working together but he’s got someone else + will be here tomorrow. [crossed out words] Clark + the boys came over for the wood. Made nice pile for Alice. Gifts from Leon cookies + bread + candy + another dress just like the first. I gave it to Anna as it’s too bright a red for my declining years. Watched the news – all so terrible. Had nice dinner. Early bed. Waked at one am by call from Les who had gotten Mary into the hospital + seemed to want to talk. He was thoroughly shaken + I guess it had been pretty hairy but thank God she’s in.
Up at 6:30 – Jack + Bill Murby – had coffee Tree surgeons here at 7:30. No time at all + the two trees were down. Dick came back + had them cut it up. Then left stumps. price $150 (“a bargain”?? When I told Dick it was $150 – including stump removal We were “being had”?) Spoke with Alice – Made reservations for L.A. – called Hertz. Called Les – Mary hadn’t gone to work (thank God) Took Joyce to the airport via the bank + then the Safeway. Went back to the Safeway + put $50 in the dime machine – now over a thousand. Home to find a certified letter from Challenge Cook Bros saying they were going to sell the squeeze-crete. called Dave who said to send someone down there to bid on it. He scared the hell out of me. Anna, Nelda, Jeffrey + I went shopping. Then I took Nelda home + went to see Dave. He called Challenge Cook + by God + our good fortune the “F. Paterra” who had signed the letter was someone he knew from McKeesport, Pa!! Everything okay. Went back to the office + put poor Shirley’s mind at ease. Got my $200 back from Marty. Dick + I went to see Alice – Stella there – showed them the plans. Went home + had a very good dinner. I was on phone thru most of it with Les. Mary had disappeared. The police in Century City had called about her + he went to get her but she’d gotten away. Poor Les – it’s been really rough – But he’s got to get her in a hospital. He’s afraid it will “wreck” their marriage. I think any more of This business will. Told him I’d be at Leon’s at noon. Called Leon. Went to bed about eleven. Started to clear the den.
Wrote a letter to Timmy on the plane.
Going to L.A. Up early. Woke Daddy a little after 7 o’clock. Washed my hair + put Detective club books for Mary + Rembrand Etchings for Rich in a shopping bag. Dick took us to the airport. Newman ran a good mile after the car. Our plane on time. Evidently a tour was on it from Hawaii + it was crowded. Sat next to a nice Negro lady Mrs. Glover who mentioned rather casually having several bullets in her. Mary + Les met us. Mary looks + is great. Cool in L.A. Drove to Good Samaritan to see Rich + though his speech is most definitely affected + hard at times to understand he was alot better than we hoped. Mary + I gave him the Rembrandt book together After our visit (Daddy sat with him maybe 15 minutes) we went out to So. Babbette + had the tour of the house. It looks lovely and Mary’s garden is really impressive – every sort of flower + bush + quite a few small trees. Les + Mary took us to Charley Brown’s in the marina for lunch. The drink service was awful but Les took care of us + the food waitress was a very cute little girl who reminded both Mary + me of Debbie. We had 2 splits of champagne + drank to Mother – it would have been their 53rd anniversary. Then Les drove us all around the marina. Back to the house + then to the airport. Mary gave me a whole stack of mysteries. Our plane was late + Mary visited with us while poor Les “circled” the airport! Good good visit. Back to Vegas. Dick had bought a whole lot of patio furniture from Leisure World who went bankrupt for 730 – value $1500. Also some redwood for us. Whee. Letter from adoption people + phone bill. 2 pools sold – both good ones went to Hughes air terminal for dinner – long day. martinis!!!
11 1/2 hours – Child Haven
Impossible to get up. Dick not working. Wendy came over at 10 o’clock to visit and after one look at me said she’d come another time. I got some coffee going and by the time Mary + Les came was passably awake. We had coffee + called Daddy. Les called a local friend in Advertising – Bob Fenton. I spoke with him too + will go see him sometime. I took Mary + Les to the airport. Did a little shopping + came home. Jimmy Judge came over. He + Dick (who was just getting up) had some of Irene’s cake + we all had coffee. I left at 1:35 for Child Haven. Very quiet there + the older kids depressed as it was a holiday + their case workers weren’t working. Took my blanket for Dick to show them. Worked with Vanessa + Eartha + Sharon. Vanessa doing well. Home via Wonder World. Dick had finished a pint and a half of bourbon with John Carpenter + I was teed off. No mail today. Had asked Jimmy Judge for dinner but he couldn’t come (called at 6:15) I heated up the boeuf bourgignonne for dinner. Watched TV. Finished cap for the boy at Child Haven. Bed about 11.
Our Anniversary – Millie + Ike called at 8:30 + Dick said we’d call back. Slept another 4 hours. I got up + fixed coffee. Irene came over with a beautifully decorated Devil’s Food cake for us. Had coffee with me. Showed her Dick’s blanket. The children Sue + Chris went out to look for lizards. Dogs no trouble. Mary + Les called at 4:00. Dick up at 4:30. Called Howard Werner who asked Dick when we were going to take advantage of his invitation at Louigi’s. Dick asked if 4 of us could go tonight. Yes – a booth at 8:00. Called Millie + Ike. Nice chat. Mary + Les over to give us a bottle of champagne. We took it over to Jack + Joyce as a token for Jack’s birthday. They gave us one of those fancy table lighters as an anniversary gift. God. Met Mary + Les at Louigi’s. Nice dinner + nice time. Went over to the Aladdin after. My fault (if I have to blame someone) Dick left after a bit + Les + Mary brought me home. Dick up + drunk + angry at me for staying. I felt that to be with a brother-in-law who doesn’t drink + would bring me home was the very safest + best place he could leave me. Forget it. Bed at 3 am. (Dick doesn’t work tomorrow as it’s a legal holiday.) The Michels called us at 6 o’clock – just as we were going to call them.
Wild Rainy day. Thunder + lightening _ heavy hail storm. I was up at 10:30 When the Florist came with a really beautiful arrangement of orchids from Cassie, Mom + George. Was very touched. Knitted + pottered around. Went over to meet Mary + Les about 3:30. Had a sandwich at the Hacienda – First Dick had taken me to Child Haven to drop off a crochet hook for Pam Notero (I thought her name was Pamela Ferrell!) Dick + Les went to look at the house on Bonita and Mary + I played the machines at Wonder World. I lost but Mary stayed absolutely even. They’re much looser than the machines at the Hacienda. Left + came back to the house. Had a drink + then went over to Zorba’s. Had a nice dinner and a really funny evening although we stayed for the first part of the show and it was too long to sit there. We left in separate cars at 11 o’clock. Dick was willing to stop for a night cap – We went to the Valley bar + with a roll of nickels I hit 777 and won $55.17. Bought the bar a drink. We played 3 games of pool + I played again with someone named Shirley? – While her husband talked with Dick. We left about 2:30 or 3:00 A.M. Because of jackpot told Dick we were even for the weekend.
Took CCA points over to Norma Lamb.
The Mets won Series score 2-1 now!
Windy day – or so it seemed. So Dick + George decided not to pour. We went to Waller Lumber (after I’d called in again at Gloria Marshall’s) We bought angle braces – hollow wall anchor molly screws, wood screws, corrugated fasteners, finishing nails + 3 sheets of plywood which we had them cut for us. Came home + went to bed. Made love, slept, made love + then about noon staggered up + had a little lunch then went to work. We finished the whole bottom part about 6 o’clock. I have a feeling I make Dick nervous but he doesn’t like to work by himself either. We watched some TV + once again had TV dinners. I’m so happy we’re working on the shelves – The only trouble is I don’t seem to manage to get one other single thing done + the house is a mess. Bed unmade, dishes piled up – laundry here + there + saw dust everywhere. The sprinklers all springing leaks too so I doubt if our lawn will ever come up. Oh dear + why aren’t there 45 hours per day?
Mary called – she + Les coming to Las Vegas the weekend after this coming one. He’s gone back into Advertising + they were “legally” married in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago. I said I’d let her know if we’d be here – We’d been thinking of an L.A. trip for Bill’s opening.
Felt pretty rotten all day. Didn’t get much done. [crossed out letter] Washed a few dishes + made bed blah Blah Blah. Read quite a bit of Dickens’ “Little Dorrit” Watered lawn. Nothing to tax the feeble or infirm. Got out to the market + bought a ham. Dick home earlyish – weather 110° – Dinner + quite a few drinks and some TV and then bed. Promises of tomorrow will be better – doubtful as Dick made triples all evening but peace reigns supreme Danny Henderson called + it seems Dick had promised to pour their pool deck tomorrow –
Mary called Dick today – said alot of things about how she’d read a letter he’d written + the spelling didn’t bother her (not true) – wasn’t it a pity that I was paying Peter’s alimony + child support – (based I guess on tax refund) that she didn’t think he’d married me for my money … etc. etc. covered alot of the mine field. Wanted him to call her at 7:00. He promised.
So after shopping, I called her. – In a state – hysterical + I think Drunk. The words not coming – very chaotic + confused. Les on the phone a while sounded so tired. Mary going to change her will. Cut the children out. Blah Blah – triple blah
Up pretty early. Paid some bills. Wrote a letter to Bill Welborne with check for $350.00. Called Harold Stern + we had a good chat – Things are going very badly and he’s had to sell off a few of his possessions here + there. Not of course his records. How I wish I could do something for him but I don’t know what as he won’t borrow money. Made a sleeve chart for Bill’s sweater. Dick was home at 10 o’clock. Unable to eat until after the Dr’s appt. Bathed + dressed + napped. Mail came with 2 varieties and I was shocked to see that Elizabeth York Sapinsley died of lung cancer on the 24th of this month. Felt badly that I’d never called them. Alvin left now with 2 small children – Greg 5 1/2 and Anne 3 1/2. Dick off to Dr’s at 2:30. I napped until he got back. He’d had blood test, EKG + [crossed out letters] urinalysis. Appt. with Dr tomorrow. He lay down for a bit and I wrote Alvin + Les Sholty + Pat Sholty. Then finally started my letter to June which I’d put off so long. Sympathy letters so damn difficult. We went to Denny’s for dinner and then to see Shoes of the Fisherman. Anthony Quinn marvelous + Olivier + Oskar Werner but the movie despite it’s panoply and sweep was oddly lacking we both felt. Went to Village Pub after + had a beer + Dick had a hamburger. Told me he was a little worried about seeing the Dr. tomorrow which I’d suspected. We made a list of things to ask him – Blood pressure, the lump, cholesterol, headaches, nosebleeds, sleeping + eating habits etc. The lump of course is what scares us both I guess. We were home at midnight. The puppies had torn up the bedroom a little but could have been worse.
Dick up at 7:30 + when I got up I found him in the kitchen cleaning up the last sq. foot of kitchen floor. Everything spic and span. My wedding present . We called Newcomb around 9:30. He’d won $400 last night! Said we’d be there around 11. Gave Dick wedding breakfast of meat balls + garlic bread. Opened Susie + Paul’s present. Susie gave us 6 of those lovely silver rimmed glasses + Paul gave us the beautiful decanter + 6 liqueur glasses that he’d sent home last summer from Czechoslovakia. Was very touched. We took the bar back to the rental agency + then to the Mint where we found Newcomb, Leon, Magda, Jane + Jim in a group! – All getting along famously. Susie + Paul not yet down. Janie won $39.00 last night. Jane, Jim, Sue + Paul left a little after twelve. Janie with $200, Jim with 2 new pairs of shoes and a hundred and thirty, Paul exactly even + Susan looking happy if not noticeably richer. Newcomb the next to leave at 12:45. Dick drove him to the airport. Am so glad he came as everyone loved him + he really made the occasion. Leon thought he was “great“. So do I. Dick back about 2:00. I’d won $40 at 21 + gave Leon $20. The four of us had a little lunch + then I called Mary + Les at the Flamingo. They were together so I didn’t feel too much responsibility towards them. Long pleasant chat with each of them. At about 4 sent Dick home for a nap while Magda + I played 21 and Leon remained glued to his slot machine. Magda + I had alot of fun. First a funny pit boss + then a nutty table with a middle aged nonstop talking couple, 2 crazy cowboys, an old man who blamed everything on Magda + so on. At one point when she went to the John I gave Leon some more money + then played no. 14 on roulette twice. The 2nd time it came up. with 1 25¢ chip in the middle of all four corners. I lost probably a total of about $50 but had given away that much while ahead + we were there all day. Dick came to get us at 8 o’clock + we went to the Algiers for dinner. Funny, Funny meal. Magda’s being here was [crossed out letter] really as blessed an event as Newcomb. We took them to the airport at 10:10 + then came home after stopping at Frank’s. Dick spoke to him about Helen but he hadn’t been aware. Met bartender named Gerry + met Elliot Thomas of Safeway Meat cutting fame. Came home around midnight. Raining + rain predicted
Wire’s from Woelzes – David + Debbie N. Clevelands. Wedding Day.
Up about 8:30 – Went out to the airport to meet Newcomb’s plane which was about an hour late so we had a nice breakfast. Newcomb looking great. Funny interchange when Dick said something about the Hacienda being the “scroungiest place on the strip” + Newcomb said “Well, that’s where we met you Dick.” Dick was won over. We stopped + picked up the bar + brought it back to the house + set it up. I told Newcomb we were already married. I couldn’t lie to him. As Dick said later, it didn’t go down too well at first but he came to see our point of view more + more + finally began to think we’d been very wise. We called Mary + Les + Mary said she was all dressed for the wedding. As I was in slacks with all the salad yet to make another plane to meet etc + everything left to be done it sounded a bit jarring. Dick took Newcomb to the hotel + I washed lettuce + sliced onions + cucumbers + was just starting in on the tomatoes when Dick got back. Jane + Jim + Susie + Paul arrived as we were getting ready to leave + I barely said Hello – just asked Janie + Susie to finish the tomatoes! We went to meet Magda + Leon + oh boy was Magda ever a gift from God. She’d gotten Leon packed + had him in charge + was thoroughly enjoying him. We took them to the hotel + went to Leon’s room where he opened his suitcase + brought out a bottle of wine, a loaf of homemade bread, a shaker of salt and a cherry pie. Then we put Magda in Janie’s room and left them downstairs en route to lunch. We came home + finished what preparation we could for the party. More flowers from George + Irene came We got dressed. I wore Mothers light gray suit + Dick wore his new suit. He had to have the belt up under his arms as the legs were too long! We went to the flower shop and picked up the corsages + the lady pinned my orchids on me. We got to the courthouse. Mary there carrying a white bound new testament + wearing an orchid which she gave to Joyce when Dick gave her her roses. Newcomb gave me a lovely gold pin this morning which I wore. The Justice was an hour late + as Dick said later it was an hour of sheer hell. Magda + Leon came, Les + Mary, Newcomb, Jack + Joyce + Jimmy Judge showed up again. Thank God we’d done it before or I would have gone beserk. Ralph Clarkson our bartender was waiting for us when we got back. Barely had a chance to change into slacks before the first guests arrived. So many new faces. My friends all a great asset and Newcomb was marvelous. The meatballs + food were a big success as was the party. Bill + Bettye Gardner, Wes + Betty Poole, Phil Sandoval, Jack Anderwood, Jim Daniels, Stan Beck + new wife etc. etc – Only sour note was Frank’s wife Helen. Party over by midnight. Jack + Joyce the last to leave + after that a blank.
Busy Day – Up at 8:30 – Bank at 10:00 – arranged for telegraph transfer of money to Vegas. Went to Motor Vehicle dept. on Cole St. Got license [crossed out letters] name + address changed + paid for 1969 registration – $43!! which seemed excessive. Went to Burlington Avenue + picked up turtle, [crossed out words] Bill Downey’s “L.A.”, my tiffany lamp and old vase. Went down into cellar + rescued “Tallahassee”. The Rubys have the most incredible amount of stuff. Never realized those rooms could seem tiny! But in the clutter they assuredly do. My clutter seems like nothing now. Brief glimpse of Jim Parker. Went to Miller’s stationary + bought some note paper and this diary – Came home + caught it up. Harry finished the upstairs shelves today. Starts in the living room tomorrow. I tried to clean the tree stains on rug + Leon’s leather chair without much success on either alas. Paid a few bills + sent in Players’ Guide entry. Spoke with Leon + it looks all right for tomorrow. Dick called at 4:15 + money hadn’t arrived. Called bank + it had gone out. Called him back. He checked with his bank who’d made a mistake. It had been sitting there since one o’clock. Mary called + sounded distracted + tight + reminiscent of old unhappier days. Wanted to meet me at Timmy’s for the turtle. Les couldn’t have the privilege of marrying her. Blah Blah Blah. She called back later. Margie had called Les up + told him to come back “Mom needs you.” So the three of them will be there. Also what’s really disturbing – she’d called Newcomb + Daddy. Oh Hell – Poor Newcomb must think California is sliding into the ocean! Spoke with Iverson + cancelled Friday. Spoke with Mona who’s going to stay here over the weekend. Went to Timmy’s with Humbug + Barkis. Stopped for Brandy + a bottle of bourbon for him. We had pleasant evening. Watched “Bunny Lake is Missing.” Home by 11:30 – Called Leon. Still not definite about tomorrow night. It’s 12 now – I’ve put in a wakeup call for 8:00 + am off to bed.
Tallulah died early this a.m. –
Day of hanging around. No news about work. Check came from Daddy. Went shopping for wrapping paper + Christmas favors for Timmy, Rich, Les, Eve + Mary. Went to post office + bought stamps. Mailed all the checks out to the children. Went to lamp place. Still not ready. Home + fixed mashed potatos etc. for dinner. Spoke with Dick. Apologized for last night’s tirade about driving. Blah Blah. Nice talk. Mary + Les came at 7 – Eve + Rich shortly after. Timmy by cab as car had given out. Nice evening. Food good. Mary very amusing. She + Les took Timmy home. Called Mona at home + things are very bad. Told her I’d sent $500 from the Rita Fund tomorrow. We talked nearly an hour. I drank madeira as we talked. Scotty called then at midnight + we talked another hour. Told him he could stay here if he came out. Bed at 1:30 –
Picked up pictures at Film Fan Foto.
