None too easy getting up. Dick had been on the phone at 6 and everyone doing what they should do. He left the house about 10:15 with Jessie to pick up the Carmen Ghia. Mardi packed. We called Mary + talked with Abby to say they were coming. Finally got them all packed + we went to the bank in two cars. I cashed a check + gave them $50 to help on their trip and Disneyland. Waved goodbye – They were alot of fun – and Winnie + I went grocery shopping. [crossed out letter] Had lunch at the Safeway + came home. Made a few calls. Went down to the shop. Took Leon’s painting and ordered a frame. Ready tomorrow. Bought some standard 8×10 frames + hung his picture in Dick’s office. Charles Banks + Bill Rehn got together + they’ll be meeting again tomorrow. Mr. Goldsworthy in + evidently he can use a few girls. Said I’d send them along. I went to Dwyers to pick up the Kalichi payment (Hah!) and the Gunite payment. They’re delighted with the job which is very nice. Pat + George Garrett took the Cadillac to lunch + then took it home. They want it. A few problems so it’s not 100% definite but it looks beautiful! Another $200.00 a month less. Cross fingers. Ritchie came in + talked to Dick. He wants to go to work for John Carpenter at a guaranteed $200 a week selling pool sweeps + chlorinators. I think it got to me even more than Dick. Dick just said “it’s up to you, Ritchie – We’ve got a place for you here -” But I felt + said to Dick + Bill Rehn that if Ritchie goes to work for John – there is no coming back to us. Dick talked to Paul Young about the car. Paul is desperate but in a way we’re getting a little desperate too. Dick Winnie + I came home at 7:00 – Winnie called Mather who sounded fine. We had a good dinner + went to bed very soon after.
Dick left early. I went by the Dwyers to pick up the excavation payment. Pleasant chat with Mrs. Dwyer. On to the office. Driving the little car. Annabel already at our office. The last day. We had 5 kids come in. Debbie Miranda seems like a likely prospect for Colby Jr. College. Said I’d write + find out about scholarships. Will also call Mrs. Stringfellow about her. Donald Ray Smith came with his Mother – sent him to the Fremont + a kid named John McCoy I referred to Hoffmeister. Michael Zeck + Frank Adams were interviewed by Annabel. We moved our stuff out + Annabel went to a hair appt. Bill Carlos came to the store + I was really terribly depressing. Had a sandwich with Bill Rehn – he’s going to see Charles Banks at 2 tomorrow. Went to the bank + cashed Newcomb’s check sent $400 to Leuse. Paid insurance bill. Went to Cleaners + stopped by library to see Mrs. Stringfellow who was out sick. Turned around + came back to store. No time to get home Called the house + suggested the kids go out for dinner. The company meeting I think was successful. The only trouble was the diggers weren’t there + they’ve been causing most of the trouble. But I do think alot got ironed out. A bit too much beer for yours truly. Went afterwards with George Jr + Dick to Tom Corcoran’s. Had another beer but I doubt if Tom noticed. We (Dick + I) had dinner at the Cockatoo. Ran into Timmy Philips + an inspector named Orland something. Home at 10 + drunk – Mardi + Winnie up. Jessie sacked out I stayed up with the girls for a bit they had a really good time at the Grand Canyon. Jess + Mardi leave tomorrow.
I stayed around the house all day. We called Shirley + told her the decision about Murray. She seemed to feel it was reasonable. Dick went to see a Mr. Chisholm about pools in a tract (learned from Marlene later that they had a bad record of paying.) The girls did grocery shopping for me and I fixed another batch of meat balls for dinner. I read + took a nap. A Mr. Corcoran called + has 2 pools for Dick but wants to see him. Dick raised Marlene to $2.00 an hour. He also told Richie + George Jr. that they can draw $100.00 a week against commission. I’m not too sure how I feel about that. I want Dick to run this business and I don’t like him talking over company policy with the kids. Blah, Blah, Blah. Jack + Joyce arrived at 5:30. Jack pretty smashed + Joyce pretty annoyed. She’d gone to the Valley bar + played the machine there + won $50.00. I’m afraid maybe they are in trouble with their marriage + I hate to see it. Repeat Blah Blah Blah and it’s none of my business. Dick not here til after 6. Jessie put red contact paper stars on “the Intrepid Traveler” + it looks very dashing. She was in rare form this afternoon + evening. Outlined for the gathering various methods of selling pools – the rich relative gambit the best. Also a hysterical tale of going to a March + getting out at the Rush Hour in Columbus. She’s a very funny girl. We played a little poker after dinner. Bed about 10 o’clock. We gave the girls $70 for their trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. Wendy brought over a sleeping bag for Winnie + gave them a big tarp to put in the ground. Winnie is worried about Mather. I wonder if she’s right. I set up about 7 interviews for Tuesday.
Dick off early – I tried to send a telegram to Susan Enelow for hours couldn’t do it as Western Union was busy. Finally got them at 9:30. Wrote Sue a birthday card with a $10 check. Jimmy Judge over + I asked him for dinner. I went to the Hacienda to pick up some keno tickets. Played 21 + lost – went to Safeway + got groceries. Home + fixed meatballs + garlic bread. Paid Vet’s bill. Took the girls to Circus Circus. Were there about 3 hours. Lost there too. Our keno ticket never won so much as a nickel Played all afternoon. Home. Called Mary + asked her to send Jessie’s letter on. Heard about Elizabeth’s funeral which sounded sad. Dear Elizabeth + Dear Henry. We had dinner out in the den (Jessie + Mardi’s bedroom) Jimmy in rare form + the two older girls were captivated. Not too certain how Winnie felt. Dick went to bed pretty soon after dinner. Jimmy played 21 with the ladies. Winnie went to bed pretty soon after Dick + the four of us stayed on + played til 11:30 Jessie very lucky. Funny evening. Jimmy had 3 or 4 drinks which seemed a sort of record for him. I think he was captivated in turn.
George Jr. over + told Dick that Murray has been seeing Bill Palmer every week. Dick is going to get rid of Murray + I think he’s right.
Dick very nice in A.M. (6 or so) the 4 am beef right out of his head. Guess he was asleep. Woke next at 8:45 when Jess was at the door + ready to go. Dick was in the John + had overslept too. He left immediately – Jess, Mardi + Winnie left with Newman at 9. Called from Boulder City at 9:45 – they had to pick him up this afternoon as the place is closed. Carol Whitmoyer said the dog is about 2 years old. I wrote out a command invitation to the Company meeting at the store on July 7th and right after Wendy came I left in the Carmen Ghia to meet Bill Rehn – Got there at 10:40. Talked with Bill. Xeroxed invitations to be given out with pay checks. We discussed Direct mailing project. Then went over the financial statement with Shirley Not too good. But them again, not as bad as it could have been. Dick + I went to the Golden Nugget for lunch + them over to Nevada national for lunch where we talked with Harold Hanson. Gave him our statement and my most recent one ($650,000 – market value). We may have done some business. He’s away for 3 days in early next week but will call on his return re a dealership. Back to the store briefly. Then to Bank of Nevada where I deposited check from Family Affair. Mailed commission to Leon + garbage bill. Went to Bank of Las Vegas to deposit $200 + chatted with Ralph Sheer – discovered George Jr. had taken all the papers away with him last night after trying to sell a pool to Ralph’s roommate. Called the office Safeway + shopped – home. Girls locked out with a very groggy Newman. Had loved Boulder Dam – I wrote Rich Ware. Jess wanted to try selling pools – I thought fine but Dick said No. We had barbecued hamburgers, corn on cob outside. Called Mary – Sue’s birthday tomorrow Dick not feeling well. Funny evening though. Paul Prokag [?] called. Wanted to bring film over + I said no. Got very on the defensive (I did.) Girls out for a ride down strip. Bed early.
Elizabeth’s funeral today. Was up early. Paid Exterminator bill – sent for dog tags. Woke Jess + Mardi to see if they wanted to go to “Breakfast at the Blvd.” They didn’t. Did some laundry. Put out garbage – blah blah blah. Had to wait around the house for a delivery of tile. Didn’t come til 12:30. Vic came by + then went + brought me a piece of 3/8″ rebar – the kind Paul fell on. am going to try to find a cap that will fit it. Had a call from Cornelia diBruin about the service guild (she’s Review Journal) Bill Muir + Denny were over. Jessie + Mardi went to meet Winnie while I washed my hair. [crossed out letter] Winnie looks wonderful – has lost weight and is becoming very pretty. I called Carol Whitmoyer in Boulder City about getting Newman fixed. The girls will drop him off tomorrow. Called Annabel after Bill Carlos called me with 2 girls to interview on Tuesday. [crossed out letter] Went down to the office for the meeting but Murray had had to go out to look at a pool with Paul Young so I went down to the R.J. and talked with Cornelia diBruin. Liked her told her to get in touch with Bill Fain for more details on the guild. Back to the office. Had meeting. It appears that Murray has been having his car paid by the company – drawn against his 1% of the gross. That was unknown to either Dick or me and It’s upsetting. We’re losing money at the rate of $10,000 a month. Murray Young on commission + I hope to hell he starts selling pools I came home + fixed the Roast – girls helped with salad. Dick back at 7:20. The girls very gay but Dick having none of it. Wants me down at the office. Later in the night he woke me up to tell me Newman (whom I’d left in) had knocked the garbage over + dragged it all around the kitchen. Wanted me to take him to the pound. I couldn’t get back to sleep + am writing this at 4 am. I feel very sorry for myself right now. Dick has his new teeth + they look awful.
Busy Busy Day. Dick off early. I wrote diary + made plane reservations. Paul Rogers by + talked with him about working by the hour. Later talked with Shirley. Told her to keep the $2,000.00 owed me but not to mention it. Called Alice to say I couldn’t make the “Breakfast Club” today. Called some of my interview kids. Called Jim Brown + Timmy [crossed out words] about L.A. Washed dishes. Did four or five loads of wash including yellow bedspread + green blanket. Paid Nevada Power, Mr. Mendoza + Florist bill – Mailed Alaria papers. Worked on lines all day long as I did chores. Lucky thing as the phone rang at 4 o’clock and a gay little voice said “Auntie P! Hi!? It was Jess + a friend, Marty McLeery in North Las Vegas. I was completely thrown + told her so. Had to go out + do shopping so told her not to come to the house til 5:30. Went to cleaners, Drugstore Safeway + got back by 5. Jess + friend sitting on porch swing. Told then they could stay in the den on the couches. Had to pack + get together wardrobe for L.A. Discovered my bone shoes were beyond repair + Dick who’d just come back raced me over to the B’way + bought me a new pair – perfect. Home + had a drink and a sandwich + got off somehow. As a matter of fact, felt a little better about leaving Dick with the two girls to keep him company. Met a pretty little girl on the plane named Luane Wallace. Ended up by giving her Leon’s phone number although I told her that he wasn’t taking anyone. Picked up my car – a mustang + drove to the Roosevelt. Talked to Leon + called Mary – Talked with Debby + then Mary who came in as I was about to hang up. Went down to the bar for a drink + got involved in bizarre conversations with an ex-producer, an ecologist and a merchant of sunglasses. 4 or 5 old fashioneds later, I went to bed at 1 a.m.
Woke around 8 to discover I’d gone to bed with my lenses. Took them out + went back to bed. Eyes sore as hell. Jessie came by to say goodbye + told us Mary Jean was coming to lunch. I took a shower hoping to be able to see a little better but couldn’t. Mary Jean looked wonderful + she + Dick got along famously. “Lunch” consisted of a couple of bloody Marys!! When I asked Colby did find some crackers. I asked Colby if she wanted Alaria + she was delighted. I put the price at $15,000.00 which I know is Way under but I’d like her to have it. After Mary Jean left, Dick + I drove in to the Chelsea Hotel. The first room was so god awful I asked for another. Not too lovely but at least Dick didn’t see the first as he was parking the car. The fuse was blown + the handy man took forever to repair it. When he finally did we made love + took a nap. Up at 7 + dressed for The Theatre. Picked up our tickets + had a bite at Howard Johnsons. Our seats were second row center!!! The play “The Great White Hope” Was absolutely Marvelous. James Earl Jones was brilliant. Lou Gilbert, Jimmy Pelham + Jane Alexander were all wonderful + nobody was bad. Gil Rogers played the exchamp + was remarkably good. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe it + Dick was completely engrossed. I wanted to stop by + tell James Jones how much I liked his performance but I got cold feet + couldn’t. We called Harold Stern + went up to see him. He has only one bird left. Things haven’t been going well for him but his sense of humor remains intact We left about two. Came back to the hotel. Called Scotty but after 5 rings decided he must be asleep so went to bed.
Dick called George tonight + Irene told him “he’s Drunk!” – Also that they hadn’t worked for 3 days because of weather.
Woke with well deserved hangover today. Nice letter from Lyle. He’s going on vacation from the 9th of September to October 2nd so he won’t be there when I get back. No more word from Peter. Oh Lord I’m so miserable + frightened about our situation. Our anniversary is Monday + I don’t know whether to notice it or let it go. Went over to the Condicts to apologize. Went to see Penny who wasn’t there. Went shopping for lunch + dinner. After lunch lay in the sun. Read. Planned to nap but never got to it. Had a day off from Anthony. Dura Crockett’s funeral was today + Hilary + Colby went but Daddy + I didn’t. Russell + I putted this afternoon with Daddy + Mr. Best and lost $2.10 – 21 points. Somehow couldn’t seem to do anything right. Came home + had a drink. Co + Russell joining us. Then a delicious dinner. Daddy very unhappy tonight. Left the table in tears. It kills me. I see the days ahead + wonder what the hell is going to happen + feel sick for him. Oh Lord – We all have some crosses I guess. I went with Jessie + Hilary to the Barn Players to see “Night of the Iguana”. Odd play + not really too good as a play but really beautifully done. Charlie superb as Nonno and Bob Morea excellent + Virginia Irwin very good. So was Rita Barnes. We took Jessie back to Alaria + came home. Daddy still up watching the tennis at Longwood on TV. I had half a beer + went to bed. No word from Mather who supposedly has tickets for the finals. He may not want to go or may not be emotionally able to. Tomorrow Daddy’s going to call. Went to bed [crossed out word] at twelve.
Woke at 2 o’clock-went downstairs in nightgown-coffee + solitaire with Colby-started looking for my contact lenses + spent the rest of day off + on doing same. Went through every room in the house. [crossed out writing] Went out for a bit + took some pictures of the house + the snow + Jessie but the light was fading and they’re going to be gloomy. Went back in + told Jess I’d owe her a dollar if she found them. No luck. Colby looked. I thought Russell might know where they were but when he got home he said I’d still had them on at 4 am when he went upstairs + I went up after him. Colby asked me at one point if I was sure I’d brought the case which planted great doubt-went back upstairs + found one lone lens on table by bed. I remembered then I hadn’t brought case. Was certain I’d lost the other lens forever as I’d bumbled around the area. and then Colby found it in a drawer. Miracle. Appt tomorrow possible. Luckier than I deserve. Russell made a payela (sp?) for dinner. Delicious. We called Mother + Daddy had gotten home safely. We watched the Wizard of Oz while we ate + I got so engrossed I didn’t leave when Co went for rehearsal but sat through til the end-Marvelous in color-Jessie has a cold. Hugged her + Anthony goodbye. Such nice children and Russell took me to 231st St. to subway. Rode in to 96th St. + took cab home as I didn’t want to walk the four blocks with my suitcase late at night. Peter called just after I got in-I was horrid over the phone about California + how I hated it-Ended up in tears. Poor darling Peter as though any of it was his fault-He’d seen Mary + Allen on Allen’s birthday-dinner at Jacks on the Beach-He was going to see Stuart + Phemy for dinner tonight-I went to bed after the call + finished the Wapshot Scandal-almost 2 am! Silly-but I couldn’t put it down. Annie didn’t come by.
Up about 8:30 or so-Snow skirling about the roofs-and a good two inches or so already down. Made coffee + called Annie-woke her alas-but had good talk. Her plans indefinite so I told her I’d put fresh sheets on the bed and pile her mail on the table + go out to Riverdale where if she came in she could call me. Called Colby. Spoke with Scotty. Took laundry out-huge negro girl in elevator who asked if anyone in the bldg needed some one to clean. I told her to come by on Monday which was stupid as I have an appt. and Annie has a woman but she looked so big + forlorn. [crossed out writing] Went shopping-bought cleaning things-bitter cold, snowy, marvelous day. I cleaned up the house a little-changed sheets-scrubbed tub. Washed underwear-Paid Hages, Laurias, Motor Vehicles, Smith dues + Phone Bill. Packed carton for Los Angeles. Put new bulbs in lights etc. etc. Wrote note to Annie + finally about 3:30 took off for Riverdale-Emergency snow conditions prevailing-Found intrepid cabbie who didn’t even have snow tires (I learned later) and we went sliding up the West Side highway. I walked from 261st + Riverdale. We had tea on arrival. Took pictures of Jessie. Anthony home soon after sporting a black eye. Russell next bringing the provender. (First time in my life I’ve written that word!) We had drinks + Colby fixed a marvelous eggplant dish + Russell a stake-we ate in the TV room. Russell delighted with his “cork pop”-Whee! After dinner children + I + Russell playing ping pong-Russell’s very good + beat us all except Anthony with whom he didn’t play quite as hard. Anthony, Colby, Russell + I played a little poker + then when the children went to bed we settled in to play for real. Michigan + then Poker. Russell the big winner + I the big loser-Colby went up + I sat by the fire with Rex + was joined by Russell-we talked about Mother + Peter + life + death more or less til about 4 am.
Up around 11-snowing out. So pretty. I pottered about not doing too much of anything. Called the Paperts + Diane asked me over for dinner tonight + then changed it to tomorrow when I said I was going out to Riverdale. Called Colby who said the snow looked pretty bad + also that she had rehearsal but I said I had letters to write etc. + could do it out there. Found a cab + got to Sigma place without much trouble. Lovely ride up West side highway. Started right out looking at Colby’s stamps and spent thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. She has a plate block album but Peter’s gone to so much trouble with his set up that I don’t think he’d like one. Jessie + Nancy Duff were both there when I arrived + I think Jessie’s a delight. She’s a very pretty little girl and a very dear one. It’s so long since I’ve seen her and the last time for any length was that wretched Christmas visit in New London. She’s 14 now and quite the young lady. She + Nancy took Johnny Taylor’s children Cathe + Beth for an hours baby sitting. [crossed out writing] I went over to the Taylors later + Co + Russell came after. Had a drink + nice visit. Saw John + Carol + their three including Tommy-they left soon after I got there. Mrs. Taylor looks remarkably well + I was so glad to see both her + Dr. T. Back to the house-[crossed out writing] scallops + salad for dinner. Snow still falling + Anth unable to get home, Jessie’s school + Colby’s rehearsal both called off so we had the evening to play. [crossed out writing] Chester Kerr’s son John is boarding with Co + Russell so he joined us for a game of Oh Shit-Only played to 8 however + the three of us carried on from there-changing to Poker later on. What I won I lost + then some. Not enough change. Said I was saving Buffalo nickels + Colby gave me six and then gave me [crossed out writing] her collection of Indian head pennies-156 in all! That same box from which 25 years ago I’d helped myself only ‘d never dreamed there were any left-Of course probably it was another box + belonged to Jimmy. But still. My cup ran over. So also did all our glasses + we went up to bed quite late + giddy.
Wake up call at 8:30-Had thought I’d wake up before but not at all. Dressed + went down to coffee Colby there-Jessie had already eaten. Had eggs + coffee went back to room. Called Jimmy + made loose arrangement to see him after tour was over. Called Miriam + said I’d try to be out by six but would call again. Shaved legs + packed up things. Left suitcase in Co’s room-went down + paid bill-$10 for the night plus calls. We’d decided on the $6.50 tour for four hours so paid at the desk + were picked up five minutes later by the bus. Very nice guide-intelligent + quite funny (as was the second one who replaced him.) We picked up some others along the way (Jess + I were the first tourists on the tour) + went to the Whitehouse-through the East Wing. All very impressive-next a tour of Congress + the Senate + the Capitol Bldg. I bought 2 books one on each (capitol + White House) for both Jessie + me. Lunch next + then out to Arlington cemetery. We saw Pres. Kennedy’s grave + the eternal flame + the tiny graves on either side of Patrick Bowier + “Baby Girl Kennedy.” Poor Jackie. Choking feeling. We watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Jessie very good company really and not uninterested. Saw the Iwo Jima memorial + then went to the [crossed out writing] new Building of History + Technology of the the Smithsonian-I’d never realized how much the Smithsonian covers. The Bus was late picking us up but as it turned out we’d been given the $9.50 tour by mistake so had nothing to complain about. As we drove about the town we circled the Lincoln Memorial very slowly and all the other points of interest were indicated although we didn’t stop. Still + all it was quite a day-Washington is a beautiful city and everywhere trees-the forsythia + the magnolia are beginning to bloom. We got back to the motel about 5:00-Colby wanted to call Ema but didn’t while I was there I’m glad to say. We called Jim who said he’d come over for a drink in an hour. I’m going to have lunch with him tomorrow. Called Miriam to say I’d be late + she told me to call Norman which I did + he came over just as Jim did-we all had a drink + a heated political discussion started which actually was more of a Colby-Jimmy argument than anything else. Jessie told me she’d had a nice time today + I was glad-bade them all goodbye + drove out with Norman to 35th St. N.W. Stopped en route for bottle of wine (Almaden Rose) Sammy had just gone to bed when we got there but saw Susan in her crib. Beautiful baby. We had a delicious dinner + sate + talked + listened to records til about midnight. I was glad to get to bed after today’s touring about.
