Made alot of phone calls today – Called Pat Robeson + went to see Ed + Casey + Betty Isom to say I was on TV. Called Mom Michels + Cassie as soon as Dick was up – Strike there too – Las Vegas mailmen went out today. Called Co + Russell who are coming on the 29th – and Hilary who told me that Bill can’t be buried in Arlington after all. It was closed in 1967 to all but Congressional medal winners + Viet Nam dead and Presidents – She said Daddy is really doing beautifully + maybe he + she + Jim could come + visit us. How I’d love that. Called Tulsa + spoke with Larry + called M.J. + spoke with John. (Drue + Dick not home.) I washed two middle window curtains and the windows + panel – magicked the couch wall. Dick went shopping for me at 6 o’clock + I grabbed a fast nap. Jack + Joyce over about 7:00-7:30 Had drinks + watched the show. I thought I looked thin + my hair looked great but I felt as though I was a bit heavy-handed in the playing. As I exited, our TV set went out – Grand – we’d had too many drinks to want much dinner. Alice Turner called + said I was prettier in real life. (?) We played Poker + then J+J went home + Dick + I sat up + drank enough to float a pickup truck. Leon had told him over the phone to make sure he stayed in control of his business – Also that All Star could be improved on – (not in so many words of course) Oh well. I went through some sort of change of attitude today – Maybe because I’ve gotten alot of it off my chest.
Turned in hours C.H.
Called Alice Turner in the morning. Clesse is extremely ill + their daughter is here from Australia. Wish there were something I could do but don’t know what. Cleaned up kitchen. Called Lester about loan. Can be arranged. Left house about 11:30. Went to Wonder World – machine $1,160! Bought a paperback mystery + new yorker + had a sandwich at Kentucky Beef. Stopped by Child Haven with crochet hook + went to Guild meeting . Sat with Annabel Miller. Sent regards to Alice + Clesse. Home feeling depressed. Dick told me Henry Avery had called + Bill in critical condition in an intensive care unit. Has received 8 pints of blood in the last 2 hours. Spoke with Henry a little later. Bill had been wandering – was asking for me – In + out of awareness. Wants to be buried in Arlington cemetery. Called Hilary who said she believed that anyone who has served honorably in the Armed forces can be buried there but that if pull is needed Jimmy could + would help. Must find out rank serial number + date of discharge. Told me Daddy was fine and driving. Called Dr. Sullivan who’d just talked with the hospital + said Bill was indeed critical but he couldn’t (+ they couldn’t) make any predictions. He didn’t know anything about the mechanics of Arlington. Called Henry back + said Jimmy would help if necessary. He asked if I wanted to come to N.Y. I said I had to think about it a little but we’d talk in the morning unless something changed for the worse. Dick suddenly said about 11 o’clock he was going to come with me. I don’t feel he should leave at this point but I’m also afraid he doesn’t trust me in New York + that’s so depressing I can’t think about it.
We slept til about 10. Then Benny O’Bannion came over with plans for 3 pools. Had coffee + some coffee cake with us. I did a little sewing + finished off + bordered the hammer square. Dick put in a new threshold on the back door. I laid out the afghan and stacked up the sqs. in piles. We had lunch + Dick cleaned out the garage. Beautiful job. We called Daddy who had to call us back. He said he was feeling better today. I said he’d sounded pretty great yesterday. He said he’d been feeling “groggy and it wasn’t helped by several cocktails in the evening.” I said that was some kind of fancy hospital to serve cocktails + he said “They didn’t serve them, I brought it with me.” And then added morosely, “I surrendered it this morning.” I wrote Jim + Hilary + said we hoped they could visit. I wrote Colby + asked her to see the lawyer in New London (she’ll be there this weekend) about Alaria. I wrote Leon + typed a proposal for Dick. Called Jean Cahlan who said Sue Winn was going over tomorrow. Called Sue + then took the certificate from House of Stereo over to her. Stayed a while + then went to Wonder World + played the machine. Up to 420! The guy playing it yesterday played until 8:30!! Lost over $400. Oh dear. I came out about even after an hour. Bought groceries + a little booze + came home. Dick was napping. Had gone out for some wine + knew just where I was. Funny. I gave him a shave + we watched TV with dinner. I [crossed out words] crocheted 2 strips of squares together. Bed about 11:30.
Christmas Eve. Slept til eleven. Dick so tired he couldn’t sleep. After lunch he went with Daddy to New-Port. I went to Barn View for stocking stuff. Then downtown with Mather + Winnie. Bookshelf for Ann Merrill + odds + Ends. Miniature Dept. Store. Stopped at Kidders – missed Bill. Stopped at Drugstore + Saw Marian. Saw Gen at the sport shop. Home + Mather, Winnie, Dick + I decorated the Xmas tree. Went to Barnview at 5:30. Couple of drinks + then lovely roast beef dinner. Down to church, the living creche + the candle light service – beautiful as always. Home + had a beer with Daddy + saw him nicely to bed at 9:30. Over to Barnview. Hilary wrapping. Jimmy on vacation + a bit tight – euphemism – Hilary a little annoyed Jimmy too conservative + dogmatic – but hell – compared to Las Vegas – Wow! Home + more to drink + wrapped stocking things – Bed about 1:30 or 2 –
Called Hilary – her Birthday tomorrow. Decided to give David the Beatles book. Daddy having his cataract operation in Feb. Hil thinks he might come out afterward. Wrote Carl + Sue, Sent $5 checks to Cotton, Jessie + Anth. (which I’d meant to send when they got back to school) wrote Luise + said I’d send money in January. Wrote Annie + The Enelow girls. Dale Isom over about noon + we worked for half an hour or so on his story. I gave him a point of view and a skeleton. He evidently told Dick after (‘She really knows What she’s talking about!” Dick + I went to Penney’s + picked up film. Disappointing + terribly expensive. Went to Italian restaurant + had clams (rubbery) + pizza + antipasto + were stuffed. Went to Bonita Rug in. looks nice. Don’t like black bar mirror but tough. Went to the Blvd + got last copy of the Beatles Little girls there putting on a show. Looked for a few other items but all gone – Went to Wonder World + saw nice microscope but too expensive (for Lincoln) Home + wrapped some gifts. 2 letters from Bill + mine to him returned!!! We went to Jack + Joyce’s for supper + had a good time. Got everything ironed out + had fun. Annabel Miller called today + invited Dick + me to a cocktail party tomorrow.
I started my exercises. Timmy called + sounded just great.
Dick up + off early. I called Millie to find when Bill + Gwen were coming + alas they left yesterday. Will be here til Sat. night so hope they’ll call. Called Hilary to ask her to get some wine for us for Daddy. (Vin Rosie!) Mather is ill again + she was about to leave for Boston to put him in the hospital. Winnie had come up 2 nights before on the 4 am bus after calling scared about midnight. Mather thinks there’s a conspiracy a foot to get him. It’s extremely sad. Reading the papers + magazines today is so unnerving to a balanced mind that it’s not hard to carry it a step further + think of the impact on an unbalanced mind. Eva called + we chatted briefly. Wendy Aneka arrived at 10. We had coffee + chatted for a while + then went through the house + outside. I’m going to like her very much I think. I mended the sheet + mattress pad + ran them through the washer + dryer. We made both beds. Dick had written Daddy last night. I wrote him a card today + sent another one to Hil with money for the wine to be given [crossed out word] with the card. I went shopping after taking the cards to Reno Lane P.O. Got us tuna fish sandwiches for lunch. Did alot of putting away + sorting. Wendy is extremely thorough + by the time she left our bedroom, the powder room + the guest + guest bath were spotless. [crossed out letters] Asked her back tomorrow. I called Mr. Hutson + straightened out about the utilities. He said he was “more than pleased” about the house on Cactus. I called the exchange + went through a big deal about new service. We’ll be without for 3 days. We called Leon + asked him for the weekend + he sounded pleased. Dick went over to see Jack + Joyce + was gone for about 2 hours. I called + he came back a little drunk + before I could even get annoyed he cut the grass on the left front lawn! Pork chops in cider for dinner. We watched TV + about 10:00 decided to go gamble – this after a hand of 21 on TV!! Called Melvin Jones + went to Castaways Lost $300 Went to Landmark + Lost another $300.00 Dick ahead at one point but wouldn’t stop. I was ahead + he got mad when I wouldn’t give him more than $500.00 He left + I stayed + got way ahead but lost it all. Home at 4 am.
David stopped by to say goodbye –
Sent off a package of stuff to Las Vegas that we won’t be needing plus presents. Daddy joined us for breakfast. Hilary told me yesterday that he was delighted with Dick + I was so happy. Hated to say good bye to Daddy. Dear, dear Daddy. His book incidentally is in its final stages + we saw the end papers + lay out + binding + I think it’s going to be lovely. We drove down the Vermont side. Pouring rain after we left N.H. We got to Simsbury at 1:10 + Cotton looking just darling was ready in minutes. Off to Farmington where Winnie was waiting outside Main. She looks awfully well + I’m delighted She’s so happy there. We went to The Corner House for a heavenly lunch. The girls so cute. They had shrimp cocktails + oysters (4 between them) while we had a couple of bloody Mary’s + then they had steaks + I had fish + I forget Dick’s choice. We gave them each $5 after lunch. Certainly 2 easier to please children would be hard to find. We left Winnie first as she had to be back by 3 + then took Cotton back to Ethel Walkers. The drive down to Riverdale was really hairy because of the rain. We got there about 6 o’clock (Had a couple of drinks + then Russell went out for Chinese food. Anthony wasn’t his usual sunny self + I was sorry as I wanted Dick to meet him at his best. Jessie going through all the agony of being accepted at College. Syracuse has accepted her but now she doesn’t want to go. Co + Russell as always welcoming + easy to be with. We played Poker + Dick + I lost as the evening waxed on. But it was alot gayer than when Colby was losing at the beginning. Late drunk evening.
Up + went to church. Bob Thurston gave us his blessing from the pulpit. After we went through the new Parish house. funny bit about putting 3 pikes on the wall (low) to keep the children from falling over. Dick suggested ground glass. Sherry after. Jimmy joined us. David over on the ski doo + Dick tried it. As he went hurtling across the field tie flying, Jimmy said “It was nice to have known him.” Good Sunday dinner. Then over to Barn View. First though Daddy gave Dick “The Tour.” Followed by a small tour of Barn View. We drove over to Alaria. Left the car on the hard top + went across the beach. The house all boarded up. We went in the kitchen and of course I’d forgotten that the electricity was off. We got sort of a look with candles but I didn’t think Dick liked it much. Came home + changed for Hilary + Jim’s party. Seth + Millie, Janice + Bob Wallace, Marian Towne, Easy + Fairfax Downey, The Balins, Henry Pogue. Norman Leger + Lansing Bailay, the Thurstons, The Jensens, The Woodmans and a few others. Okay at the outset but ended up drunk with Lansing + Norman + Marian. Jimmy had left for Washington. Came home (I presume as I was there in the morning) and Dick poured himself + me + Daddy all another.
Arrived Boston 10:13. Mather met us. 3 front teeth missing so he looked a little like Ron Moody We picked up a yellow chevrolet from Hertz + drove to Mather’s new apartment. Really a great place although not yet furnished. Lots of books though. To celebrate our recent marriage Mather had bought a 6 pack of Ballantyne ale + a bottle of Peach Brandy! Dear Mather. We had an ale, then went to the top of the Prudential building. Then back for a little Peach Brandy then to the Union Oyster house for lunch. We left Boston about 2:30 + got to New London after stopping for a no-doz about 5:30. Took the “Sarah Blanding Room.” Jimmy + Hilary invited for 6 but didn’t make it til 6:45. Daddy funny about J.C.C’s idea of time. Daddy called Dick Peter + then asked me if I’d heard from him. (I had) Dick said “No, that’s the other one” + he + Daddy seemed to get along famously. Ethel back + looking remarkably well. So good to see her. We had a really very pleasant evening. Quite early as we were exhausted.
Sam Best died today.
Mr. Best died in the early morning. Eva is in the hospital + didn’t really encompass the news. Odd how 2 years ago everyone thought she’d go momentarily + so glad Mother didn’t have to go through that. Daddy + I drove over to Woodstock Vermont + had a lovely lunch at the Woodstock Inn then went to Morgan Ballou’s where I tried on about 20 dresses + found nothing I liked. But lovely trip. Daddy had stayed at the inn with Mother + the Colgates in [crossed out word] 1913. Mrs. Merrill this morning called to tell me that the colors of the painting in the daylight looked “just terrible” – “hard + awful” – “Carl Cochran is wasting his time.” Hilary called to say she liked it. After Daddy + I got back I went to Cricenti’s to shop and then t0 the College Sport Shop where I bought a dress, 2 pairs of slacks and two tops. Also a sweater for [crossed out letters] Dick, a shirt for Daddy + a tie + a pair of gloves. Also two very attractive little wooden bottle openers that are also carpenter’s levels. Home + fixed dinner. After dinner sat + talked with Daddy. He kept saying He’d given Mother a bad time + we talked alot about it + I said I thought Mother was a very happy woman. Also that I believed in Life after death very strongly. I think I helped a little although the tears were pouring down my face but, Daddy couldn’t see them. Went over to Hilary + Jim’s later + sat + talked with Hil + Cotton + finally just Hilary. Told her I was going to marry Dick. Came home + called him up. He said he’d been thinking about going to school. I think we’ll have a lovely life together if we keep in mind how lucky we are to have each other.
Cotton sent me a card which killed me. She said “Dear Auntie Payshe, I’m so glad you’re here for Christmas, you make us all so happy.”
Woke up in “Sarah Blandings” room + wondered where the hell I was. Evidently I’d gotten up to go to the John in the wee hours + stumbled back into the wrong bed. Made it up + repaired to my own bed. Down about 10 o’clock. Read alot more of the Yoga book. Really interesting. We went to Inn for lunch, saw Grace Dean + Eleanor Lovely. Drove to Claremont to see Ethel who was operated on Monday. Looked amazingly well for so recent an operation. Being fed intraveinously. She thought the 2 bed story was very funny. We only stayed a little while. On the way back we stopped at Pine craft + I bought a small nest of tables and 2 lamps and a nice large pine chest. Thought about a dining room table but will wait to make up my mind. Came home. Cotton over + we went out to ride on the Ski-doo. I loved it. Drove myself once but seem to have all the wrong reflexes. Back home + read more yoga. Tried a few exercises. Daddy + I over to Barn View for dinner. Susan cute as a bug. Landslide Turner stopped by with Jim. Glorious steak dinner. Took Daddy home. Decided to have Christmas dinner here. Jim + Hilary off to Lebanon around 9 o’clock (Hilary very grudgingly as I would be) to Jean Woods 25th Anniversary. Cotton + I decided to get a painting from Carl for over the mantlepiece. Called the Cochrans + said I’d be over. First I called Dick + he sounded so pleased to hear me that I was delighted. I am really very lucky to have met someone like him + I think maybe we’re good for each other. Cotton + I went to the Cochrans. We selected about 8 paintings + Carl + Eleanor came back with us to try them. We chose “Border Incident” which looked marvelous. Left it up + paid Carl. Cotton + I sat + made Xmas decoration waiting for the discovery which didn’t come! Hil looked + said good night. Jimmy the same. When pointed out he said Oh my God!
Didn’t go to bed which was dumb I guess but I really had too much to do. Plugged in the coffee at 5 – emptied garbage – made bed etc. Dick called at 6 + we had poor conversation. I’d said I’d call him tomorrow meaning tonight. Because of not sleeping, Today still seemed removed – Blah Blah. Anyway he told me to get some more coffee + I was hurt. Idiotic. [crossed out letter] Cab driver appeared promptly at 7:15. Got to the airport at 8:15. Bought insurance for Bill Wellborne, Timmy, Dick + Leon. Bought a book on yoga by Jess Stearn + read til it was time to board. Then went to sleep instantly. Don’t even remember taking off. Slept through the drinks + woke only in time for dinner. Arrived on time + Duke Rowe was there to meet me. Beautiful drive up with the headlights on the snow laden trees. Got to Jim’s at 7:10. Duke in for a drink. Susan Slater still up + as cute as can be. Boys in grand shape Hil looking well. We had spaghetti dinner + then came here for the Colby girls to carol. Fire + cocoa + cookies “Miss Bossy” – Jimmy over around 9:30. So good to see him. Daddy asked me about my boyfriend – Mary had told him over the phone. I said I’d met him on Labor Day weekend in Vegas + Daddy said “Newcomb said you didn’t go to bed” – Ho Hum. Went upstairs around 12:30. Very tired.
Nixon elected 34th President in very close election about 100,000 votes –
Mary called at 7 am to tell me that Marilou died [crossed out letters] yesterday. It didn’t really penetrate + I went back to sleep. Got up around 10 o’clock + had coffee. Mary called again + it came back like a shock wave. Colby had sent her a telegram + said also she was still waiting for the round robin letter. Incredible. Mary was sent 2 copies of the wire + I asked her for one to show Iverson. I called Barnview + left a message for Hilary. Went + voted for Nixon Cranston + the L.A. Times reccommendations except for Rapid Transit. Went to Carl’s for food + the bank for $200 check for Luise. I finished the R.R. letter and called Mather. He sounded remarkably possessed + was glad to talk to me altho his minister was there + we didn’t talk long – Mary had just called. I talked at some length with Winnie. She’d written a story abut Burlington Ave + I’d moved at the end to Laurel Canyon! Come to think of it I suddenly remembered her dream about me being attacked in the house! She’s very happy at Farmington and I’m so glad she’d gotten started there before this happened. Poor Marilou. The cause of death I suppose is accute + chronic alcoholism. None of us knew her very well. Mather will have a difficult time I think but who knows. Hilary called shortly after I’d spoken to him + Winnie + we had quite a long talk. I told her about my incident + moving + Co’s wire. She said Co + Jim had had a knockdown dragout fight about the R. Robin. I said I’d try to come home for Christmas, Mary came over at 2- We had coffee and I ordered flowers to be sent to the funeral home in Boston. We went up to see my house around 3 and Mary was really ecstatic about it. Loved it. Her enthusiasm contagious + I began to get more excited myself. We came home + she called Harley Greene for me about shelves. Mary left around 5. I took a brief [crossed out word] nap. Had been worrying all day beneath my concern for Mather + Winnie about last night’s conversation with Dick and it suddenly occurred to me that the simplest thing to do was call + apologize. So I did Was glad although the call was a trifle strained at the outset. He said he’d call tomorrow. I went + picked up Leon + we drove to Bill’s. A delightful little pixie-Peter Pan type elderly lady there named Peggy – Little Lord Fauntleroy suit. Jack Weller made a glorious dinner. The election, was a real cliff-hanger – extraordinarily close. I took Peggy + Leon home + settled on Leon’s couch for the night. Rafferty lost – Thank God + Nixon was inching ahead when I fell asleep at 2 o’clock.
Did alot today. Up early. Wrote postcards to Leon, Paul Wilkins, Dorothy + Scott Renney. Also the Erdmans, Bill Tregoe + Lyle + Miss Gray Sent get well card to Dr. Ware – Birthday card to Anne Merrill. Wrote Bill Wellborne with $40 cash, Jimmy with Isabell’s new address + details about her improved fortunes + Signe Hasso to thank her for lovely wire now over a month ago. ([crossed out word] almost 6)weeks) I mailed a package of my old letters, clothes I won’t be needing + a few of the things I picked up in Denver. Mailed it, bought stamps + talked briefly with Vic Dean. Saw Betty Nichols, told her (she knew), went to Drugstore bought an alarm clock + had a very touching + nice talk with Marian Towne. What a dear. Went to College Sportshop + settled my bill – exchanged sweater + chatted with Jen + then saw Mary again. Cashed check at bank Saw Bill Kidder who told me funny story about kid + cornflakes. Everyone now knows about Peter + me + I’ve impressed on one + all how hard it is for Daddy so don’t think he’ll be bothered – The main thing is the people I’ve talked to have been genuinely sorry + that’s something. I worry so about Newcomb in two weeks. For both Newcomb + Daddy More for the former because he assumes guilt more than anyone in our family. I phoned the Barclay + reservations are confirmed. I called Dr. Richman’s office + have 3 appointments – [crossed out word] tomorrow, Weds + Thurs. Called the service – no messages except from Mary. Called the house + little mail. Had funny letter from Mary Parker today. Lovely letter from Bill Wellborne. Spoke with Lester – Lunch on Weds. Had nice dinner with Daddy + Hilary. Will [crossed out letters] come back again fairly soon even if for just a short visit. Watched Rowan + Martin with Hilary – talked a while after. Came home – have had 2 beers as I pack – am going to bed –
A day in which I got quite a bit done. I wrote 7 notes. A long one to Newcomb and rather brief ones to Celeste, Marge + Mrs. Parr, Anne Cleveland + Susan who’s 71st birthday is on the 11th. Aunt Hope called last night + had seen Louis Auchincloss so knew I was coming into town. I figured he [crossed out letters] must have said something about the divorce so called him + found out Aunt Hope had brought it up. Must have been Co or Mary. As Louis said Old Ladies love disaster.” I told Daddy who said Aunt Hope sure does. I wrote her a note explaining why I hadn’t written sooner. Blah Blah Blah. In the morning Daddy showed me his Civil War Slides and gave me the “short form” talk. It was extremely interesting. I went downtown after lunch + bought some sneakers. Then Daddy + I went over to the cemetery to see the two stones he’d picked out for Mother + himself. We went for a walk down the “Burma trail” to the pond + back up. With Pekie and Puppy dashing along ahead + to the sides of us. Good walk. Came back + saw Eva Best who I feel quite sure thought I was Colby I brought her some mystery stories. Saw Sam Best who asked me about Peter so I told him + he kissed me profusely + said “anything” I did was “perfect” – a little bizarre but I guess you couldn’t ask for more in the way of support! Kiss, Kiss. Hilary over for a drink + Daddy made several + very strong. Too strong I now know. After dinner he + I watched the Red Sox beat the Washington Senators. Beer + too much. Good time but after I went over to the Condicts like Pavlov’s dog. A complete recreation of last summer. Oh Lord. Home drunk around four am. Not going to do that again this trip. Too little time as it is.
