An eventful day to say the least – Wendy over about 9. I had been pawing thru the library for Tina’s assignment + am not at all sure – I had the right stuff. Wendy went out taking Ana they went to get Jeffrey’s shots pick up birdseed, paid Dr. Warpenski, took magazines to hospital. went to the bank, bought M.O.’s + went to the P.O. to send the money via registered letter to Ana’s brother. Meanwhile I called Geo Spicer + have appt. Sat. morning. Made reservations for Dick + Daddy at 11 + me at 7:00. Called [crossed out letters] Shirley + Alice + tried to get Eva Jenkins. Dick home at noon. Had run into a piece of reinforced steel + punctured his eyelid. It looked terrible. He rested for a bit Wendy back with Jeffrey (feverish) + Ana + then she took off again in her car with a grocery + booze list. We went to meet Daddy who came in exactly on time. A change of temperature of 100°!! He’d left at 20° below and it was 81 here! He got a look at Dick’s eye + said he’d scraped the eyeball + should get to an Eye Dr. We got an emergency appt with a Dr. Shearing at Rancho + went over – He gave Dick a painkiller and Rx + I got my glasses fixed at Benson’s. Home by five or so. Put the Roast in but it just didn’t get done in time + Daddy went off to bed quite drunk + really exhausted. Poor Ana all upset. Jeffrey screaming. Dick had some ale + I had 3 or 4 drinks + we went to bed early.
Up at 9:30 or so – still a little drunk. Went to the Valley Bank to see Jack Kiser + get the loan for George + Pat Garrett. Went to their store with a check for $4,925.00 + they were delighted. George gave us a couple of glasses of white wine and I made the first toast, “Fuck 1970” _ It went over big with George. Went down to the store + Dick’s Philadelphia gang came by – Wimpy + June Binder, Betty + Arthur Clark. Pat Grant + later Joe (?) + Fran. Went over to Country Quarters for 3 or 4 drinks – pretty raucous gathering. They wouldn’t let Dick pay + that was great. We left them all there. Stopped in at the Store + John had a signed contract with another financing deal for 1400.00. I told him we were not in the financing business. That we had put $90,000 into the business + were prepared to kiss it all good bye rather than invest another dime. I resented it most because Dick had already told him on the Grady pool that we wouldn’t do it again. Came home. Sent Nelda back in a cab. Lay down for an hour or so. Jack over + then George + Pat with a huge candle. Funny time. In the middle Dick disappeared + went to bed! They left right after. Dick didn’t eat any dinner. I ate + drank more + then to bed
Breakfast – still a bit tiddely – Furniture mart – not able to have my picture taken as no record of my name (Carpenter yes!) Given temporary passes. Went to patio furniture place. Man never stopped talking We had aspirins. Bought alot of stuff. Called Dick + asked him down. Left at 12:30. Went to Olvera St. Lunch. Shirley bought lovely candle holder. Drove around Music center. Back to hotel for a rest. Shirley’s friend called. Trouble with plane. Dick arrived at 5 – Had had “one drink” (later learned it was a triple!) downstairs + wasn’t in too good shape. Leon made an appt for Shirley to see Helen Davis. Scotty, Dick + I went to Timmy’s for a chicken curry dinner Dick slept part of the time But at the end when Timmy played part of his tape he was awake + very impressed. So that was good. We came home around 10:30 + went to bed. Glad to get Scotty + Timmy together.
Paid Carl + Herb + Dick – they’re off Deer hunting for a few days – Will this ever be done? Went to bank + store – played machines + cleaners. Home + bathed + Packed – Ana gave me a manicure but only a little as no time. Called Anabel. Dick took me + Shirley to airport. We got to Burbank at 2:45 – Got car + drove in to town. Took Shirley to Farmer’s Market where we had coffee + shopped. Then drove in to 20th + looked at Hello Dolly set. Drove by County Museum + got out at the tar pits. Got to hotel + saw dear Scotty. Had coffee with him + then went to Leon’s for dinner. Nice, nice time. Hotel + Scotty + bar. Danced + drank + went up to some man’s room + had more to drink. He was some kind of engineer + what he made of Shirley + Scott + me I’ll never know.
Dick called from the office at 8 o’clock very drunk – hadn’t been home. I was very upset.
I wrote Leuse w/ check + paid VW insurance and exterminator Kind of a crazy day. It had gone down to 37° last night the house freezing. Dick off early, I bathed + washed hair + got suitably dressed for Fike luncheon at the Sahara Went down to the office at 9:35 – Shirley off with Dick to try + sell a pool to Randy Petrie (friend of Jack Kiser’s + client of Pat + George Garrett whom she’d met) Marty’s wife called from New Jersey + gave the operator his new number + then died a thousand deaths wondering if some woman would answer. Marty called + it was all okay. Bud Bartlett at State Contractor board called about Western Homes. Wants to see Dick. Shirley + I went to luncheon in separate cars. The Sahara parking facilities a shambles – One thousand irate women honking + yelling + backing into each other. 35 minutes to park. Confused inside. Saw Annabel. Finally caught up with Shirley + Darrell – saw Jean Cahlan + Judy Carmany. Met a woman named Babe Harnes. luncheon good. Speech okay. Then they couldn’t find my car. Couldn’t get to bank so cashed a check at the Sahara. Played a little 21 + won $25. Didn’t get car til 4:30. Home at 5. Packing – utter confusion. Letters from Scotty + Jimmy (enclosing line Daniell [?]) a note from Mary. Had good dinner + Armando + Ana drove us to airport. Arrived Reno at 9:10. Got to Lake Tahoe + King’s castle about 10:30. My skirt fell off in the lobby. Just slithered down to my ankles. Weirdly nobody noticed but Dick + I got hysterical. Came up to our room + then went down for a drink + a snack + 3 keno tickets. Bed about 12:15 Gorgeous view.
Went down to the office around 10:30 – Dick working on plans for Gene Devine’s pool. I took Gene’s credit ap to Nevada National to Harold Hansen + then I went roving – to 4 Queens where I lost the $30 I had + thence to the Golden Nugget where I cashed a check + got ahead about $40 after a couple of hours. Went to the main P.O. with 3 letters to register for San Salvador. Next tot he camera shop at the Blvd to pick up my pictures. Some very good ones. Came home. Clark Isom came over with his chain saw + cut through the stump outside. Saw too small to do much more than heavily score it for easier chopping. Dick home around 6:30 + he + Armando both took some swings at it with an axe. Dick is not in good shape – now about 20 lbs over weight. He wouldn’t eat dinner + went to bed. Ana put some food in a casserole for him to eat later. It’s a difficult situation. The meal was completely non-fattening It’s the booze that’s doing it. Dick slept til 10 + then woke up + ate + we watched MacCloud on TV very tired –
A day of no accomplishment. Slept til 9:30 although I could hear in the dim distance the electric saw + a hammer. Bill + Jack came by but Carl + Herb were not here. They never did get together. Tony was two men short in Henderson so Dick + Jack + Bill all worked with him. Jack couldn’t get back here so Carl + Herb were hung up + went home Dick came in about 2 o’clock – pretty exhausted. Went on back to the office after a drink. I took Nelda home at 4 – Very funny conversation in the car – mostly non communication Went to the office. We’re putting in an ad for a free pool sweep with all pools built in October. That should bring in a little business. Had a drink at the office – Dick was having several. Came home + he went over to J + J’s – Joyce back now. Invited them to dinner tomorrow. Dick took a shower + went to bed with a bowl of soup . no dinner. I ate with Ana + Armando + we had informal English lesson after. Bed around ten o’clock –
Terrible terrible fires in L.A. + now San Diego. The worst series in the state’s history.
Called Les – not in so left a message. Carl + Herb “Los Hombres de Destrucion” came early + went to work. Jack here too to discuss electrical work with them. Called Shirley about accts (Jack has just gotten a raise!!!) Salvation army came to pick up rug. Anna + I went to Dr. Carter with Jeffrey at 11:00 – Jeffrey has an ear infection so can’t have circumcision til next week. Dr. C. spoke a few words of Spanish but I thought him very abrupt. $12.50 for 2 minutes. Jeffrey peed on the nurse. We went downstairs for one Rx + had coffee. Then to the Sav-on drug for the other Rx. Did a little shopping + came home about 2 o’clock. Carl + Herb were leaving. Had nailed a door up against the old kitchen opening. Good to keep out burglars. Not so good for getting out to the back. Also realized that Dick’s safe was [crossed out letters] in the closet so if a burglar came we would have been nailed in + unable to stop him! I took a nap + slept like a rock for 2 hours. Got up + wrote [crossed out word] Russell, enclosing the promissory note + a statement of full payment. Wrote Leon with $6 commission check. Janet Goldsmith called + invited Dick + me to “Bottoms Up” on Sunday afternoon. I accepted for me + tentatively for Dick. Dick home about 7 – we had a drink + then dinner. Dick went outside after telling me to show Anna + Armando all my scrapbooks. I said just the album Mother had put together. Anyway that took a longtime + Dick came in very angry with me. Oh dear. We had about 4 drinks (in all but had about a pint a piece.) Dick wasn’t measuring + I didn’t realize til too late.
Dick off at 7 am. I got up + dressed quite a bit later. Went down to the Shop at 10 to see Harold Hanson. Who didn’t come til 11:30. Bill Rehn had done some lovely sketches for Marty. However the first call he went on they wouldn’t let him in the door – and this after a very warm reception yesterday. Dick didn’t come into the office until 3 o’clock. Mr Dwyer had been calling all day as the plasterers didn’t show. Slightly ghastly Monday. I took Russell’s painting “Devote” to a frame shop. Then had lunch with Elaine + Mary Dean. Ostensibly to discuss my book. Forget it. It didn’t come up + there was no way for me to mention it so just sat + made small talk I stayed in the office quite a while. Marty sold a pool. Four leads came in including a big one for 2 pools that Dick + Marty are going on tomorrow. So at least things are looking up from that point of view. I left about 4:30 [crossed out letters] Deposited money in both banks + went to the Safeway. Sudden rainstorm Came home + fixed macaroni + cheese + sausage + green bean casserole for dinner. I did some wash + some ironing. Called the office at 7 and then at 8:00 – Dick waiting for “a Paul from call Grube” obviously been drinking – Finally came home blind drunk with Bill Rehn who took the key to the VW. I didn’t eat with them – just went + sat outside + cried after being told by Dick several times to shut up + go to bed. It’s all like something out of a bad movie – Italian realist school. Blah Blah Blah.
Most excruciating hangover in a long long time. I am too old to have a civilized dinner. Stick to one form of alcohol. Dick left at 9:30 to go pick up another refrigerator (which I do not want but let that pass.) At about 2:30 I called Joyce + could have killed her when she said that Dick was “in good shape” when he left their house. “He refused a drink for almost an hour + then I just made one + put it in front of him. Maybe I shouldn’t have.” I told her no she shouldn’t + I wouldn’t thank her for it. He + Jack came staggering back around three o’clock. Unloaded the refrigerator. I’d hidden the booze but when it became evident they were just going to go out to a bar I made them each a drink. Dick started picking (mildly but picking) on Winnie. Thank God Marlene invited her to the movies this evening. I think she’s had a thin time (not that we could have done things much better under the circumstances) Last night Dick told Stephanie that Winnie’s father was a millionaire which was awkward enough – then he told Winnie that Stephanie resented her which she hadn’t felt but which put the cap on her evening. Oh shit. Marlene came for Winnie about 5. Dick + I went to J + J’s at 5:30. Bill Muir came over + we had a very good rib dinner. I made a list of their plans for tomorrow + Dick + I left at 8:30 + came home + went to bed. The girls still out. There’s so much to get accomplished that Dick just cannot afford to get drunk. He does so damn well when he doesn’t.
Dick left early. I went by the Dwyers to pick up the excavation payment. Pleasant chat with Mrs. Dwyer. On to the office. Driving the little car. Annabel already at our office. The last day. We had 5 kids come in. Debbie Miranda seems like a likely prospect for Colby Jr. College. Said I’d write + find out about scholarships. Will also call Mrs. Stringfellow about her. Donald Ray Smith came with his Mother – sent him to the Fremont + a kid named John McCoy I referred to Hoffmeister. Michael Zeck + Frank Adams were interviewed by Annabel. We moved our stuff out + Annabel went to a hair appt. Bill Carlos came to the store + I was really terribly depressing. Had a sandwich with Bill Rehn – he’s going to see Charles Banks at 2 tomorrow. Went to the bank + cashed Newcomb’s check sent $400 to Leuse. Paid insurance bill. Went to Cleaners + stopped by library to see Mrs. Stringfellow who was out sick. Turned around + came back to store. No time to get home Called the house + suggested the kids go out for dinner. The company meeting I think was successful. The only trouble was the diggers weren’t there + they’ve been causing most of the trouble. But I do think alot got ironed out. A bit too much beer for yours truly. Went afterwards with George Jr + Dick to Tom Corcoran’s. Had another beer but I doubt if Tom noticed. We (Dick + I) had dinner at the Cockatoo. Ran into Timmy Philips + an inspector named Orland something. Home at 10 + drunk – Mardi + Winnie up. Jessie sacked out I stayed up with the girls for a bit they had a really good time at the Grand Canyon. Jess + Mardi leave tomorrow.
Busy Busy Day. Dick off early. I wrote diary + made plane reservations. Paul Rogers by + talked with him about working by the hour. Later talked with Shirley. Told her to keep the $2,000.00 owed me but not to mention it. Called Alice to say I couldn’t make the “Breakfast Club” today. Called some of my interview kids. Called Jim Brown + Timmy [crossed out words] about L.A. Washed dishes. Did four or five loads of wash including yellow bedspread + green blanket. Paid Nevada Power, Mr. Mendoza + Florist bill – Mailed Alaria papers. Worked on lines all day long as I did chores. Lucky thing as the phone rang at 4 o’clock and a gay little voice said “Auntie P! Hi!? It was Jess + a friend, Marty McLeery in North Las Vegas. I was completely thrown + told her so. Had to go out + do shopping so told her not to come to the house til 5:30. Went to cleaners, Drugstore Safeway + got back by 5. Jess + friend sitting on porch swing. Told then they could stay in the den on the couches. Had to pack + get together wardrobe for L.A. Discovered my bone shoes were beyond repair + Dick who’d just come back raced me over to the B’way + bought me a new pair – perfect. Home + had a drink and a sandwich + got off somehow. As a matter of fact, felt a little better about leaving Dick with the two girls to keep him company. Met a pretty little girl on the plane named Luane Wallace. Ended up by giving her Leon’s phone number although I told her that he wasn’t taking anyone. Picked up my car – a mustang + drove to the Roosevelt. Talked to Leon + called Mary – Talked with Debby + then Mary who came in as I was about to hang up. Went down to the bar for a drink + got involved in bizarre conversations with an ex-producer, an ecologist and a merchant of sunglasses. 4 or 5 old fashioneds later, I went to bed at 1 a.m.
Made quite a few phone calls this a.m. + left the house at 9. Went down to the shop + looked at the photographs from the master pool brochure. Chose one of a pair of jolly old folks lolling about looking happy. Talked rather briefly with Bill Rehn who didn’t ever get to see the photo before it went in. Arranged the “office”. Dorothy arrived a little before ten. Charles Banks a really engaging Negro kid came in first + while I was interviewing him Richard Baldridge came in + Dorothy took him. Some guys came in with pool equipment + Charles leapt to his feet + offered to help them. The first time that’s happened. I really liked the kid. Will call Penney’s for him + failing that I’m going to try an ad agency. Next came Steve Guess whom I liked also, although I didn’t feel he was quite as outstanding – in fact not at all outstanding. Just a nice kid. Wants yard work. Brent Paton never showed. Long talk with Dorothy + I’ve gotten to like her. We closed up about 12:30. Was over at the office when John (Bill) Brown appeared. His big thing is show business! Wants to play guitar. Is currently self-employed so I suggested he contact the various agencies in town + try for auditions. Went to meet Joyce at the Landmark, had a little lunch + looked over the script. Played Keno + won $2.50 all afternoon. However broke even at Black Jack + on my way out I bought a roll of quarters + hit four bars for $250! WOW. Came home, Dick home a bit later – really smashed. Going to have John Carpenter put away, buried, killed. Called Jimmy Judge. I told Dick if he did I’d have to leave him + that would kill me. We couldn’t live together with something like that I cried + called Dave Abbatangelo who said to come in tomorrow at 11:30 + we’d start an injunction (evidently John had loused up another job!) Jimmy Judge over + said “I think Patience is right – do it legal” – A pretty grim evening. Dick falling on a bed etc. “On the wagon” tomorrow. The worst is Dick on the phone cocktails – started with sitting in a bar at 9:00 am this morning.
All slept in a bit – Dick off in a huff (?) without vitamin at 7. Daddy up at 9:00. I wrote diary, paid phone bill. Dorothy Beagle called + I said I’d stop by this afternoon. I called the adoption people + said we were still interested – Our case worker Janet Owens is now Janet Bubnis – she got married. Wendy came over for her check + said goodbye to Daddy. I called Alice Turner + spoke with Clesse. Got their son-in-laws name + had Daddy sign his book for him. While Daddy packed I made some calls – tried to get Mrs. Bradley at probation couldn’t get her. Called Joni Marie – not working. Called Mike McShea + spoke with his Father who’s got him going to school for programmed learning which sounds good. Daddy wanted to get a couple of bottles for Dick so we went to the store + got vodka bourbon and some gin for Daddy’s trip to Denver (“Uncle Alston is a little strict. Maybe strict isn’t the word so much as parsimonious!”) Came home + Druscilla called from the office – Scott back – London + England a fiasco. Drue + M.J. had sent flowers hoping I’d hate them as they were sick of getting them!! Funny. She said hello to Daddy. I fixed sandwiches for lunch + a final martini for Daddy. Dick back at 2 Winnie called! To wish me Happy Birthday a month late + to ask me how to fix steak!!! She leaves for San Antonio tomorrow + I suggested she might come in for a few days after. We went to the airport + put Daddy on his plane. The first unhappy moment of his whole visit. Just hated to say goodbye to him. Dick off to the office + I went to Dorothy Beagles – got a whole batch of new applications + discovered a new probation officer – George Bubnis!!! If that’s Janet’s husband it will help a great deal. Pleasant time with Dorothy – home – called J + J. made calls for interviews. Early bed – Ed Kulick over + Dick out of bed + into the vodka. I got a little frosty.
Slept most of the day after being brought home – There had been a flash flood + hail storm – I read a little on waking – Dick had gone out to try + find Marie to run the store in place of Tom Cooke. Went to airport + was told she was in L.A. – went over to Laura’s to get the LA. Phone no. + had to crawl thru the doggy door (a 10 minute operation with Herman licking his face.) (Laura in Hawaii. When he came home we napped a bit more – By now I was feeling really sickly remorseful. Dick decided we should go to the Tropicana Golf Club motel in a pool suite. There was one available so off we went. Stopped at Frank’s bar + saw Jerry – (almost 8 months now.) Bought a half pint of vodka + some ice + grapefruit juice. Our suite very posh. The pool water really hot which was a blow but probably the best thing for us. The bed had a vibrator in it so we steamed + vibrated + made love + slept + around again all night. Dick went out for flapjacks about four – then back to sleep + so on. We’d left the number with the service but nobody called –
