Oh Lord. What a day. Call from Clark Isom jr. Barkis and one black dog had beaten up Scoshe – Dick had to take Scoshe to the Vets and it was decided I should take Barkis to be put away He’s been getting worse and I guess I know it. Took him down to the Animal Shelter + felt just terrible. He wasn’t all bad and probably if he’d been an only dog + had had more love he would -have been all right. Drove to the office and cried on Dick’s shoulder then went to work and typed 3 copies of the Prologue + 3 copies of an outline. Wrote a covering letter to Helga. Also made several Xerox copies plus letter and 1 copy to be registered with the Screen Writer’s guild. Bill Rehn came in (hadn’t gotten my letter (?)) told Dick they should have the money by the 20th of January. (The loan is due Feb 14th) I left – stopped briefly by Alice’s + came home. Fixed salad with Ana + set up table. Betty Isom called to say that Scoshe had died + they felt terribly + didn’t feel like going out. I told her we’d had Barkis put away + how badly we felt blah blah blah. But think it was best they didn’t come. Got dressed + washed hair (reverse order) Ed + Casey the first to arrive and the the Philadelphia Gang – Wimpy + June, Betty + Art, Joe + Fran + Mary. Jack + Joyce next. The whole party stayed in the kitchen almost the whole evening. We remember Ed + Casey leaving + we remember J + J departing but after that it’s a bit of a blank _
Happy New Year
Woke about 9:30 or ten. Called Mom, Cassie + George. Called Daddy who said he’d come out after the 10th. Called Colby (They’re coming out in April + Cassie in June) + called Leon. We gave Ana + Armando the day off + after lounging around went over to J + J’s for black-eyed peas. Well it was a hell of a drunken party. Oddly enough Dick + I drank ourselves sober. We ate around 4:00 + left at 5. Jack + Joyce are going on the wagon tomorrow (?) + don’t count today as part of 1971. Maybe we’d better not either! We went to Frank’s + drank more + played the slot machine + lost $80.00 Came home about 6:20. Had a fight (not serious) about the dogs (Not too clear now what about the dogs) + went to bed.
This is a new year and I hope it will be a good one for us and for our friends – for Leon, for Harold, for the Garretts – for Eddie Royce – for all of us. And I pray that Bill Rehn will not let us down.
Leisurely day. Went over to see Betty Isom who goes back to work Monday. She gave me a brochure on the Corning counter top ranger and we traded some skin creams. Went over + saw [crossed out letters] Ed + Casey + showed them our plans for the new kitchen. had a beer which got right to me. Home. The tree surgeon came with his little boy and Barkis bit the child. Didn’t break the skin but scared us all. especially the boy who was really terribly good. Later Barkis was barking at the baby + if this goes on I’ll have to have him put away. Dick home at one. Anna made us soup + a sandwich Armando back about two worked on his car most of the afternoon. Mary called + talked for almost an hour – read poems etc. I don’t think she’d been drinking but everything was very non sequitur Dick + Armando went out to get a starter for the car. Went to the office first to meet Carl Lagerquist + run off the plans for the addition on the blueprint machine. They left at 6 + came back at 8:45. Dick very drunk + I was very angry Jimmy Judge stopped by while Dick was passed out in the bedroom. He only stayed a short time. When Dinner was on the table I got Dick up + he managed to eat a little + sobered up some Bed about eleven.
Up early to the phone again. Called Mr. Farrar who is elderly + was muddled when I brought up James Brown’s name. I don’t know how he called me but it must have been via Henry via Ed Fancho Anyway I explained about the will which means nothing + he said it was sufficient for him + he would send the MSS to me first class. Also remarked that there seemed to be “a great many peculiar people in the case.” How true. He said “of course the book is unpublishable” I wonder. Called James Brown + said that was it + thanked him + to bill me. Out of relief I think he said no bill. Called Russell who wasn’t home but spoke with Colby. Mary’s been calling all over the country again. Daddy not there I’m glad. Co told me to send Jessie’s letter to New London. Dick left about 9 to meet an inspector + then after a bit I called Timmy + had a pleasant chat. I took Humbug to the Vets in Boulder City and he was pronounced “Healthy + Happy.” May have a touch of arthritis but otherwise in great shape. Took brief nap + then went to the Show boat + played 21 + Keno. I won $50 which was nice after playing all afternoon. I have the crazy idea that “Bill’s Keno ticket” will come in in a big way – to repay the money + maybe do something with the book – weird? Went to the Shop. Marty may have another pool – Rich – has sold nothing + neither has George Jr. One because he’s sluffing + should be let go – George because so far he hasn’t gotten the knack. Maybe Bill Rehn will help. Huge care pkge from Leon. We ate sandwiches out + came home + lights out by 9:30
Dick very nice in A.M. (6 or so) the 4 am beef right out of his head. Guess he was asleep. Woke next at 8:45 when Jess was at the door + ready to go. Dick was in the John + had overslept too. He left immediately – Jess, Mardi + Winnie left with Newman at 9. Called from Boulder City at 9:45 – they had to pick him up this afternoon as the place is closed. Carol Whitmoyer said the dog is about 2 years old. I wrote out a command invitation to the Company meeting at the store on July 7th and right after Wendy came I left in the Carmen Ghia to meet Bill Rehn – Got there at 10:40. Talked with Bill. Xeroxed invitations to be given out with pay checks. We discussed Direct mailing project. Then went over the financial statement with Shirley Not too good. But them again, not as bad as it could have been. Dick + I went to the Golden Nugget for lunch + them over to Nevada national for lunch where we talked with Harold Hanson. Gave him our statement and my most recent one ($650,000 – market value). We may have done some business. He’s away for 3 days in early next week but will call on his return re a dealership. Back to the store briefly. Then to Bank of Nevada where I deposited check from Family Affair. Mailed commission to Leon + garbage bill. Went to Bank of Las Vegas to deposit $200 + chatted with Ralph Sheer – discovered George Jr. had taken all the papers away with him last night after trying to sell a pool to Ralph’s roommate. Called the office Safeway + shopped – home. Girls locked out with a very groggy Newman. Had loved Boulder Dam – I wrote Rich Ware. Jess wanted to try selling pools – I thought fine but Dick said No. We had barbecued hamburgers, corn on cob outside. Called Mary – Sue’s birthday tomorrow Dick not feeling well. Funny evening though. Paul Prokag [?] called. Wanted to bring film over + I said no. Got very on the defensive (I did.) Girls out for a ride down strip. Bed early.
Elizabeth’s funeral today. Was up early. Paid Exterminator bill – sent for dog tags. Woke Jess + Mardi to see if they wanted to go to “Breakfast at the Blvd.” They didn’t. Did some laundry. Put out garbage – blah blah blah. Had to wait around the house for a delivery of tile. Didn’t come til 12:30. Vic came by + then went + brought me a piece of 3/8″ rebar – the kind Paul fell on. am going to try to find a cap that will fit it. Had a call from Cornelia diBruin about the service guild (she’s Review Journal) Bill Muir + Denny were over. Jessie + Mardi went to meet Winnie while I washed my hair. [crossed out letter] Winnie looks wonderful – has lost weight and is becoming very pretty. I called Carol Whitmoyer in Boulder City about getting Newman fixed. The girls will drop him off tomorrow. Called Annabel after Bill Carlos called me with 2 girls to interview on Tuesday. [crossed out letter] Went down to the office for the meeting but Murray had had to go out to look at a pool with Paul Young so I went down to the R.J. and talked with Cornelia diBruin. Liked her told her to get in touch with Bill Fain for more details on the guild. Back to the office. Had meeting. It appears that Murray has been having his car paid by the company – drawn against his 1% of the gross. That was unknown to either Dick or me and It’s upsetting. We’re losing money at the rate of $10,000 a month. Murray Young on commission + I hope to hell he starts selling pools I came home + fixed the Roast – girls helped with salad. Dick back at 7:20. The girls very gay but Dick having none of it. Wants me down at the office. Later in the night he woke me up to tell me Newman (whom I’d left in) had knocked the garbage over + dragged it all around the kitchen. Wanted me to take him to the pound. I couldn’t get back to sleep + am writing this at 4 am. I feel very sorry for myself right now. Dick has his new teeth + they look awful.
Excitement Excitement. Began [crossed out letters] with the appearance of a little black dog that looks so much like Humbug I thought he was. A puppy obviously abandoned. I called Channel 3 + put in an announcement but in the meantime named him Newman (the new man around the place) + with Dick’s approval am prepared to adopt him. Next a clamorous barking set up + there was a desert turtle outside the back door big as a football – the dogs nudged him around the house + halfway across the road. I flagged down a car + a man got out + pushed him off the road. Then Ed came by + carried him off into the desert. Dick came to get Daddy at 10 o’clock + took him around on a series of jobs. I sent flowers to Rich + to Carl + Sue. The TV-repair man was over + we’re going to need a new picture tube. Went to the bank + deposited $325 from my N.Y. acct. (I was overdrawn by about $76!!!) then to Wonderworld – bought 3 lawn chairs + a new table cloth for the poker table and groceries at Pantry Pride. Played the machines a little + visited with Daisy. Home Daddy back impressed with the work. They’d eaten at the Tropicana + had a tuna fish sandwich the size of a pillow I fixed a meatloaf + potatos [potatoes] + turnip greens. Jack + Joyce over at 5 + we had a really nice evening. They loved Daddy + it seemed to be mutual. We’re going to go out fishing on their boat on Sunday. Daddy stumbled in his room but Jack + Dick were there. I called Dave today + the receivership supercedes the corporation by-laws. Called Walt Jenkins + he + Eva may come by tomorrow evening –
Up at 9 and after quick coffee off to airport to meet Daddy. About a half hour late from Tulsa. So good to see him. A little more unsteady perhaps + I hate that but so damn dear. Brought him straight home. While he unpacked we had some french toast. He was very pleased with his room, the books from Steven Longstreet – with everything. Dick went for some ale while I fixed Daddy a sandwich – then about two/thirty we all took naps. Jack + Joyce stopped by for some cartons. They’re sending Jack’s daughter back to Hawaii (!) I put our roast in the oven about 4 – we sat outside + had our drinks + Daddy loved it – The breeze was light + warm + the desert went through its color gradations all on cue. Had dinner + then Ed + Casey + Mr. Casey + a guest named Marv something (whom I didn’t like) all came over. More drinks + the dogs got under Daddy’s feet + he took a fall. I should have put them out but didn’t (though it was so suggested). Dick I had too much to drink and it was a delirious evening. Barely remember their leaving. Bed somewhere around ten.
We called Jimmy who called us back at his expense – he was 50 yesterday! Hil had given him a small house down on his pond as a present.
The astronauts of Apollo 13 landed safely
Day all screwed up but I guess a good one from Dick’s point of view at least. They sold a couple more pools and John is in agreement with the financial arrangements. I went to Mel Close’s office at 11 o’clock + waited an hour and a half – he’d forgotten the appt. Made another for Monday at 10:00. I wrote TWA re refund. Wendy came + cleaned the house which was genuinely dirty thanks to the sand + the dogs shedding season. I brushed 6 brushes of hair off Barkis + we vacuumed him. I went to Gloria Marshall’s + I went shopping. knitted + read. Wendy home about 4:30. Was reading when the dogs started barking – looked out + there was a sherriff’s car. Heart in mouth I went out – “Nothing wrong” – they wanted to ask some questions. They came in + it seems a body was discovered up over the little hill. Had we heard anything? Seen anything unusual. I’d seen the cars + deputies there on the road this morning + hadn’t known what had happened. Didn’t notice anything unusual last night. Later when Dick came in he told me a body had been dumped in the road. Discovered at 6 am. Shot in the head + chest. But killed somewhere else. A man in his 30’s as yet unidentified. It rained briefly and there was a sudden sharp + transient rainbow over sunrise mountain. Dinner + TV. Almost through with socks. Mary + Les called. David + Debby there + anxious to come to Vegas this summer on their way back East. David has been accepted by the English Dept at Yale. Such an honor + so proud of him. Bed at 10 –
Wakeup at 7:00 – ordered coffee + melon for Dick. I ate his strawberries. Left at 8:20. Got to Burbank at 9 checked in the car + waited for our plane. Dick suddenly noticed he’d been charged twice for the Roosevelt garage + went to call them. While gone they announced our plane “First + Final call” – Dick no where to be seen – Everyone boarded. I had Dick paged twice they told me they couldn’t “hold the plane, madam.” Still 4 or 5 minutes before scheduled departure but I was fit to be tied by the time Dick appeared. I guess I thought too that he’d been in the bar. Which he hadn’t. Anyway I calmed down + it was an all right flight. I read Ellery Queen’s mystery magazine. Home at 10:40. House clean. Dogs happy to see us. No digging We went to bed, made love + slept til nearly four. Dick shopped for dinner. I called Magda and gave her a list of names + numbers in New York. Jimmy Judge stopped by for a while + ate most of Dick’s cookies. We pottered about the place picking up a few things here + there. Had nice steak dinner and went to be watching the Pink Jungle. Quiet recuperative day. Which is just what we both need.
Dick Rund called this A.M. for Dick’s extra tax information. I ordered flowers sent to Mary Jean + Druscilla then I wrote Henry Avery with a check for $250 for a month’s rent at the Van Rensselaer. And I asked him to have Dr. Schiffman mail me his bills directly I wrote Bill + told him I’d sent the money for one month’s rent + would send him his check as usual at the end of the month. With his rent paid and Dr. Schiffman sending me the bills I told him I felt the $350 would be ample to cover any extras. I wrote Annie + returned her 2nd check for $250 along with one of my own for the same amt. Told her in detail about the trip. We made a shopping list at Van Tobels for some outdoor work + went over – we’re going to re-lay the bricks in back + re-plant the front lawn. Got the stuff + then went to Keno lane to mail the letters including a letter to Leon from Dick with a check for $3,000. Then went to pick up the dogs. Delirious to see us. All groomed + shiny. Glad to see them. Brought them home via the strip. Saw all the pickets. Dick started pruning branches + I did a little weeding of [crossed out letters] grass in the driveway. Went to the Safeway for dinner stuff. Al Guida over with insurance policy. Worked a little more. Was tired + depressed so took a nap. Dick fixed up his workshop. He, too tired + depressed. Strange. Had barbecued steak + went to bed after a little TV. I wrote rough draft of letter to Mr. Berg.
Twins’ B’day. Slept til about 9 o’clock. Wendy had cleaned up the house yesterday so not coming. George over around 10 – John Carpenter too. Got to know him a little and I like him. Called Howard Pennington + woke him in time for his plane. Funny chat. Gave Dick a check for $33,000. He + John off to see Lamarr Bennett today. I was exhausted + got nothing accomplished. Wendy over to pick up her check. Its the twins’ birthday and I’d meant to do something about it + didn’t. Dick came in + said would you believe me if I told you I miss the dogs? Called Pet Town + we’ll get them out tomorrow. I lay around all day + read. My big jackpot went on Weds. $1229!! Ho Ho. Will never let a machine get to me like that again. We had chinese TV dinners and went to bed early. Dick tired too. It was a crazy trip.
Slept in. Up about 9. Dick + George over a little later. Barkis + Humbug had torn the insulation out in the garage. Mess. Gave George his socks. Wrote a long letter to Ben + Muriel Wright. Wrote a few Christmas cards. Turned the house upside down looking for Rich Ware’s new address. Can’t find it. Check didn’t come today. Either from Julia or rent check for Browns. Oh dear. Cashed $30 check and bought groceries. Went to look at Dick’s job at Howard Warner’s. Really beautiful. Home. More cards. Have done about 60 now. We went over to Jack + Joyce’s to take back a drill. Gave them their Xmas present. The Sears. catalogue. They really liked it. Had several drinks there. Joyce told me Jack didn’t make love to her anymore, which startled me as a confession. Talked about it a little with Dick after. Guess. She was a little high. Leon called me about a possible job. I fixed ham for dinner, We watched television (dreary), I gave Dick a Shave (I’m getting very good) + we went to bed.
Hungover. Went to Bonita. Dick + George + Jack there. I took a pot full of coffee but joined them in Cold Duck instead. They sent me out for some more + some sandwiches + as I drew back up I saw Jessie Emmett’s realty office car parked in front. Jack came running out – obviously sent to head me off so I made myself very unobtrusive in the garage. After the prospective buyers left (+ Dick felt they were enthusiastic) we sat around + drank Cold Duck + called it a day. A bad one, too, as they had to cut through the drywall from the dining area to the Master shower to locate new disturbances. Oh dear. We went to the Valley Bar + then took 4 bottles of Cold Duck over to J + J’s – finished it + came home. Didn’t eat. Fixed nightcaps. I banged my nose on the cupboard under the guestroom sink + brought forth an incredible torrent of blood. No stopping it. Scared Dick. Humbug later bit Dick when he tried to put him out. He bit him hard + Dick in turn hit him hard. Luckily I was a little too out of it all to be too involved. On second thought – luckily is the wrong word. If I hadn’t been tight it might not have happened. We talked seriously about adopting a baby. I think we both need the responsibility of someone to care for + think of besides ourselves. We both feel that way and I don’t seem to be getting pregnant so we might as well go ahead before it’s too late.
Dumb, stupid day. Kept waiting for the glass man to come (“Will be there before 12”) + measure the guest bath tub for shower doors. I read + knitted while waiting. Finished center panel, did a reverse of the canoe square + knit one plain. Finished my crime club selections. Made bed + futzed about a little. No mail. Started “A day” by Nabokov + don’t like it, not just because there are 10 words a page I don’t know but I find it extremely smart-ass. Maybe I’m a dumb head. Could be. I’d wanted to get out early in the day + had waited for the damn glass man who never showed. By one o’clock any impetus I’d had was gone and I went to sleep on the couch. Dick home about 2 – Full of energy. Painted frame of new door to bathroom + then went back to work on the sprinkler system I did some laundry + ironing + fixed a stupid dinner. Dick didn’t eat any of it which was about as depressing as anything could be. The dogs getting on Dick’s nerves + I think he’s carrying his yelling etc too far. Oh Blah, Blah, Blah. Went to bed after watching “Laugh In which was a big disappointment. Dick came to bed a little after + turned on a TV movie “Nobody’s Perfect.” Found myself getting interested though I couldn’t barely keep my eyes open. Funny film + we watched it until it was over at 11 o’clock.
