Woke at 7. Dick was leaving. I started to cry. I knew he had to go early but not that early. And I was upset with myself for wasting any of our time together. He changed his plane til 10 o’clock and we made love + he brought me coffee. He called a cab and I saw him off a little after 9. He called from the airport as I hoped he would and then I went back to sleep. Up around one or so. Made reservations for Vegas two weeks from now. Leaving here Friday night at 7:25 + coming back Sunday afternoon at 4:30. I wrote him to tell him + told him I was sorry about last night. I went to dinner at Leon’s. Nice evening. He gave me a cake to bring back to Jim and he talked with Mr. Bozem on the phone + said he wanted to buy me the refrigerator + washer + dryer as a present. We didn’t argue about it at the time but I can’t have him do a thing like that. Came home + gave Jim the cake. Had some beer with him. Michael + Brenda leaving tomorrow for San Francisco. Asked us to join them for a beer so we did. Brenda I like. Michael – no matter how you slice it is odd. He asked me to write a note to Signe for him + I was at a loss. I know she told Annie after talking to him when she called me that “the man is rozy so I wrote Signe “Michael Leighton who is bringing you this note has been staying in my house. I’ve moved out. etc etc.” All true. Came down stairs about 2:30 –
Up around noon. fixed eggs again. Kept trying to get Mrs. Bozem on phone. No answer. Had called yesterday so we just drove up. Nobody home but the back door had been left open so we spoke to the neighbors + [crossed out word] went on in. Dick thought it was a steal. Later outside, He said “I’m so relieved. I’m so relieved” Don’t know what he’d thought I’d get but I was rather touched + very pleased with myself. We drove along Mulholland drive back to Cahuenga. Stopped to look out over the valley. We had some coffee + walked along Hollywood Blvd. I told Dick I loved him + had wanted to say so before. He said he was glad to hear it as he felt the same way. We went to see The Odd Couple and enjoyed it. Came home + Annie called. She’s bought property in Willetts, California. Told her I’d try to come up next week. She said Willetts was near Fort Bragg. I told her Ft. Bragg was in Georgia we called her back when Dick said the same thing. He talked with her while I got the map. By god there’s a fort Bragg near Willetts. We had several drinks + then went to Helenes for dinner + wine. I had too much to drink. Really shouldn’t combine wine + booze. Bruce had a beer with us when we got back – all very vague in my head. Bed.
Up at 5:30. Dick got up with me. Took a bath + gathered up a few dresses and my long hairpiece. Left the house about 6:35 + got to the studio at 7. So nice to see everyone again. Bob Keith covered up my still black but improving eye and the hairdresser did a great job with my fall. Wore Green + black Tchin Tchin dress with jet beads + Benjamin Franklin glasses. My face still a trifle swollen but only enough to make me look quite different which is good. Bill Demarest had been ill, the scene went very well + Fred de Cordova was laughing. It should be funny. He told me “it was a pleasure as always.” to work with me. Stopped in + saw Ed Hartman. Virginia had told him what happened + we talked about it briefly. I’d been thinking lately of Mr. Rice saying “My dear child, you’re the kind of girl who would heal instantly” then I resented the remark now I know it’s true and am deeply grateful. Came home by 11 o’clock. Dick sleeping + I went back to bed. We got up around 3 and I fixed eggs + bacon. I’m becoming extremely attached to Dick. In fact I love him but it’s such an unlikely relationship in many ways. Certainly physically however it’s a great one. I went out to Mary’s at 6:30 with booze for the evening. Timmy came at 7 o’clock and then Rick + Eve Lee. Les didn’t get there til after ten + Mary was upset. As soon as he got there I left after explaining I’d been up since five. Good party. Raced back to Dick. Watched end of Star Trek + beginning of Hitchcock. Then went to bed.
Slept lateish – up around 11:00 – checked service + had a message from Dick that he was arriving at 4:45 in the afternoon today! Surprise. Went back to the house + bathed + shaved legs + tidied things ups a little. Napped Talked with Dorothy about tomorrow’s work call. Had to leave house around 3:15 because of rush hour traffic. Dick’s plane a little late. We had a drink upstairs + then went for his bag. I checked the service and my work call was for 7:00 am tomorrow. The weather back East had decided him to put off the job til Spring. We went to the Safeway where I cashed a check and Dick bought all my groceries including the dog food. Told him I felt like a kept woman. Came home + called Millie + asked her for 2 days next week instead of tomorrow. We made love, drank a little. I ate a little. Made love again. put in a wakeup call for 5:30 a.m.
Up at 10 or so – Mary called – Said Elizabeth hadn’t been too well + as I’d been meaning to call her for a long time I felt bad. Spoke with Rich Ware + made date for tomorrow night. Called Liza + John about tonight. Accomplished very little during the day. Finished a book by Winston Graham called “Take My Life” – Started the pockets for Bill’s sweater – one inch wider + 2 longer than the pattern. Got a letter from Michael Leighton – friend of the Garmes Who’s going to take the apartment with his wife at least for a while. They’re arriving on the 10th. I talked with Leon. Meant to write Round Albatross letter but took nap instead. Woke at 6 + went to Liza + John’s. Very pleasant quiet evening. Long tall wisk drinks. Courtney cute as can be. Relaxed time. Ghost story by the fire afterward. Left at 11:45. Came home + had some beers + read + knitted. Kept hoping Dick would call. Well he did at 3 am. By which time I’d had several beers too many. He burned my last letter, I’m glad to say but his wife has both the others including the one with my phone number. She’d been going to call me. Oh hell. Dick’s going to Philadelphia next week + wants to spend the weekend here before he goes. Will call Thursday at 6:00.
Long talk today with Jill Chandler. She also invited me to the Shaw plays tomorrow night.
Millie came at 8:45. Gray day + was going back to bed when Bess called. I’d almost forgotten. Went picked her up + had steam bath + massage + facial. Came back via Safeway. Cashed check + bought things to clean with + dog food. Took my laundry + picked up great bundles of it. Spoke with Dr. Ware + Henry Jones + Leon + Timmy. Things began to get a little complicated about dinners etc + I lied here + there. Millie + I had sandwiches from the store. I wrote Mary Parker a rather funny letter + sent off the mail that’s been accumulating for her. I gave Millie a ride downtown to shop and I went to the automobile club on S. Figueroa + Adams + got a new membership + paid off my speeding ticket. My deadline on it was October 2nd. Somehow I’d had it in mind as being the 6th. Home + took nap. Paul called + said he was coming over. Doorbell rang + it was Jim Parker. Not looking too well. Said he’d had a breakdown when Mary left. Gave him a ham sandwich + some fresca. Door bell rang + it was Jane. She had a cup of coffee. Finally Paul came. He invited me + Timmy for dinner on Weds. He gave Jane a ride home. Jim stayed a few minutes longer then left. I took the dogs over to Timmy’s. A very nice evening. I knit quite a bit on Bill’s sweater. Have started the front Rt side now. Home by 11:30. Sat up + read “Cynthia” the spy story Jack Spieden had sent me. Kept hoping Dick would call but he didn’t. Went to bed about 3 am.
Up about 8:00 – Henry had made coffee. Saw him off about 9 o’clock + went back to sleep again almost immediately. Leon had said he’d call in the morning but he didn’t + I slept til past one – Rushed about getting dressed + cleaned up for Culver city. Got there about ten after 2. Wardrobe ladies Grace + Julia. Fitted for costume – nice uniform size 10. Fit perfectly. Had to be shortened. Nice shoes. No cap. Ate a sandwich at the commissary + came home. Message from Lyle about the Actor’s Studio production of the new Irvin Shaw plays at UCLA. Wanted me to go tonight. Called him to say I couldn’t. Pleasant chat. Paul called – suggested he call Lyle about the show. I spent the afternoon reading + knitting. Have almost finished the back of Bill’s sweater. Tried to call Bill but couldn’t get him. Went to the Erdmans at 6:30. Sharon had fixed a lovely chicken dinner. We had a few drinks + chitchat then dinner + bridge. Alot of fun despite a fairly desperate family contretemps with Erica going on off stage + in shifts sobs filtered through from moment to moment. Poor kid – fourteen is a ghastly age. Came home about midnight. Thought Dick might possibly call from Vega + sat up + knit + read but all was silence.
Up fairly early. Futzed about doing not much. Henry Jones called to say he could drive + would I like to have dinner with him – told him I’d call back. Dorothy called with a commercial appt at Gerry Shnitzer’s at 5:30 for Maxine Anderson. I went out to Culver City at 12:30 to National General. Harvey Clermont took me over to the set. Got the nod from Mark Robson a little after one. They wanted me to come back after lunch for wardrobe so I ate in the commissary + read the script. It’s going to be a real thriller. Really very tight + deftly done. Saw Peter Donat who’s going to play the Doctor. Had met him years ago in New York when he roomed with Peter Buchan. We chatted some + I learned that Peter Buchan is married, lives in Denver + has a little girl. I suppose after all these years I wish him well but I’m not too sure. Had to wait a long time + they finally told me to come back tomorrow at 2:00. Home, called Henry. dinner date. Went to Schnitzers. Saw Trudy + Gerry + Sally Hughes. Quick interview + painless. Home paid bills, Laurias, DWP, Hayes. Sent $265 to George Hadley in Louisville for Courtney Terry. (my plane fare) Wrote Jimmy a note asking hime to write a letter for Leon. Henry arrived about 7:30 or so. We had a drink + then went to dinner at Helene’s. I love that place. Henry spent the night as he didn’t want to drive. I told him about my change in attitude without going into it very far. A marvelous wild thunder storm. Thought of Dick + how he’d love it. Played “Beyond the Fringe for Henry + he enjoyed it.
Had 3 wakeups – 6 – 6:30 + then 7 – finally made it, bathed, filled a thermos with coffee after a cup here + drove out to the Palisades. A nice sunny warm looking day + with only 4 hours sleep I still felt pretty good. As I came up Chatauqua I began thinking how lucky I am to have Iverson and Doug Forde and enough money and my health and my wits and Leon too with a whole new outlook on my career. I ran into Bob Iverson downstairs + told him I’d just been thinking how grateful I was to him and he said “you must be feeling better” – which I laughed at + he immediately said “I didn’t mean to sound cynical, but you do don’t you.” We spent most of the precious hour reading my letters – first [crossed out letter] Daddy’s then [crossed out word] the copy of mine to Colby which he thought was very good + direct. Then Colbys two answers which he found pretty loaded + which he pointed out never answered my question. Nor after 6 pages did they in any way indicate that Colby had budged an inch from her original stand. I showed him Mary’s letter which was written for that great big Publisher in the sky + finally Newcomb’s which he said was a very nice letter – “supportive.” I told him I wouldn’t mind if Colby wasn’t supportive if she would only be answerable. Told him I planned to get Peter to write her. He told me it was helpful to him to see the letters. He seemed to feel as I’ve told him that both Colby + Mary could be pretty difficult to deal with. Next appt. not til next Thursday which seems a long way away. He said I seemed to be doing very well + I said “Thanks to you” + he said that was good to hear. Had coffee + metracal + went to see Doug at 10. Had a pelvic (“Good Morning”) + then coffee + a long talk about Rita. – I am in good shape physically, incidentally. Doug took Rita’s letter and is going to line up some people to see Rita when she gets back. Came home + washed hair. Had a 2:00 appt at M.P.O – request by Bob Palmer for a Kodak commercial. I told him I was with Leon now. Met some nice girls there: Lia Waggoner esp. Saw Mary Ann Gibson. brief dumb interview went to unemployment + met a nice cameraman named Myron Schnieder. Reinstated myself. Came home + took a nap. Forwarded Peter’s mail + wrote Rita + forwarded a letter to her. Leon called + I went to dinner with him noodle [crossed out word] soup, cold cuts, a couple of drinks and a little canoodling. I’m not very good at fending but have decided a blend of laughing, intensely serious talk + too much smoking plus a few tears when called for will keep the situation comfortable.
