Up early to the phone again. Called Mr. Farrar who is elderly + was muddled when I brought up James Brown’s name. I don’t know how he called me but it must have been via Henry via Ed Fancho Anyway I explained about the will which means nothing + he said it was sufficient for him + he would send the MSS to me first class. Also remarked that there seemed to be “a great many peculiar people in the case.” How true. He said “of course the book is unpublishable” I wonder. Called James Brown + said that was it + thanked him + to bill me. Out of relief I think he said no bill. Called Russell who wasn’t home but spoke with Colby. Mary’s been calling all over the country again. Daddy not there I’m glad. Co told me to send Jessie’s letter to New London. Dick left about 9 to meet an inspector + then after a bit I called Timmy + had a pleasant chat. I took Humbug to the Vets in Boulder City and he was pronounced “Healthy + Happy.” May have a touch of arthritis but otherwise in great shape. Took brief nap + then went to the Show boat + played 21 + Keno. I won $50 which was nice after playing all afternoon. I have the crazy idea that “Bill’s Keno ticket” will come in in a big way – to repay the money + maybe do something with the book – weird? Went to the Shop. Marty may have another pool – Rich – has sold nothing + neither has George Jr. One because he’s sluffing + should be let go – George because so far he hasn’t gotten the knack. Maybe Bill Rehn will help. Huge care pkge from Leon. We ate sandwiches out + came home + lights out by 9:30
122 3/4 lb
Dick passed his exam!
Day devoted to knitting. In A.M. finished fringe on Vanessa’s scarf + washed + blocked it. Quite pretty. Put together child Haven blanket. Went to Gloria M’s + had lost 1 1/4 lbs. Bought groceries + came home. Took a nap like a dead thing and then crocheted double border around blanket. Dick home at 2:30 as John is sick + they’ve got to replan the display pool before cutting. Bill from Dr. Gelfand in N.Y. for Bill Wellborne $75.00 which seems very reasonable. Washed + blocked baby blanket. Dick called the contractor’s board at 3:45 + Glory to God – he passed the exam. So pleased + proud of him. Phone rang minutes later + it was Co + Russell to say they’d had a good time (!!) and are dying to come back. Also – Russell just got a $2,000.00 raise. Oh Boy! What a good day all around. I worked on my dice sock – Marion Ryder truly a diamond in the rough – arrived about 5:30 with the pump – a white vision (looks like a mobile Fannie Farmer’s candy kitchen). He had about 6 drinks at the house. Dick since he’d come home was about even + then we went to the Holiday Inn for dinner before dropping him off at the Sahara. We were home a little before 10 o’clock. Had a nightcap (I had 4 drinks over the evening) + went to bed. Tomorrow Dick + Denny learn the pump.
Up at 6:30 – Dick not here. Pottered about wondering what to do. Called showboat at 7:30 – not registered. Called shop. No answer. Denny over at 8:45 – no key. Called shop again a little after 8. Dick answered, heard my voice + hung up. Russell suggested I write him a note which I did. We all had breakfast + then drove down to the shop. Russell went in to say good bye + gave Dick my note. Dick said he’d call me later. Co + R + I went to Circus Circus + then to the bank where they cashed a check for Russell. Picked up the Ford + [crossed out letter] came back here. Russell packed. Co + I played a little spite and malice. Went to the airport a little after noon. Had nice lunch + then played some slot machines. Thank God Both C + R won at last. Saw them off at 3 o’clock + hated to see them go. Came back via Stop’n’go. No word from Dick. I lay down + read + he came in about 4:30 + said “shall we just forget the whole thing?” I’m afraid that’s the catch phrase alot of the time but I agreed. We discussed trip to L.A. tomorrow + then the guy from Challenge Cook Bros. called + said they’d deliver the pump + save Dick + John $750 state sales tax. So we decided to fly to L.A. Got reservations. Dick went to see John + we called Denny + Wendy Had Chinese TV dinners + went to bed at 9 o’clock. Exhausted.
Slept all day. Russell woke me about 4:30 or 5 with coffee. Dick home. He’d thought we were “in jail” when we hadn’t come home at 6 o’clock this am. Seemed an unusual assumption. Russell took the Ford to get some groceries. Dick asked Jack + Joyce over + Danny + Margie for a drink. We were having clamdiggers – Dick called a cab + ordered more vodka. Everything fine until he told me he’d talked with Jimmy. I got upset. He told me that he’d merely called for “an opinion” + that Jimmy had said he thought Congressional interference from outside would do Dick more harm than good. I agree of course but I felt bothering Jimmy was very wrong. Dick then said I’d been willing to do it for Bill Wellborne – I said I didn’t think a grave and a license were the same + he asked me if I cared more about Bill than I did about him. That seemed so out of left field + so [crossed out letter] unrealistic that I answered very snottily that I’d known Bill alot longer than I had him. Whereupon Dick walked out. Russell back in a cab as the damn ford had broken down again (“battery low – new relay!!”) Other cab came with vodka + J + J + Danny + Margie all arrived almost simultaneously Jack told me he’d been against Dick calling Jimmy just on general principles Oh Blah Blah. Had pleasant time (except I was crushed) + they left. We had steaks + salad + baked potatos [potatoes]. Dick called to invite Russell to a poker game at the Showboat hotel – “Room – 223” – First Russell said okay then he called back + said the VW wouldn’t start. Put me on the phone + Dick hung up. We were all tired + went to bed. I read for a bit + had the phone by my pillow but it didn’t ring. What an incredible picture Russell + Co must have. Oh hell.
[crossed out words] Denny at the house at 8 – Told him I planned to keep Dick in bed til he slept it off – Denny told me he was supposed to be taking the exam today God! Called in + said he had to go out of town. Then discovered he’d called them yesterday + asked to take it today. Postponed til next Tuesday. Gave Dick strawberries + sherbet + a little later some ovaltine. Went to the bank with Coco + over to the Blvd. She got some nice things at the B’way + we walked through the mall. Stopped at B. Dalton’s to see Elaine but she was on phone – chaos reigning here. Home by noon. Little by little got Dick up. I’d talked with Murray Levine whom he was supposed to meet at 8 and some other people. Russell went with him to the shop about 1:30 – Co lay in the Sun and I lay indoors + read an Agatha Christie that Annie sent me. We played a couple of games of Spite + malice + then bathed + got all dressed up – in long skirts – I loved it!!! Dick + Russell back at 6 or so having put in a very constructive day. So happy – We went to the Sahara Don the Beachcomber’s first for a mai-tai and hors d’oeuvres + then to see Flip Wilson. Great show. After Dick said he was going to go home + go to bed + for us to stay. He was in good shape so I agreed + stayed with Co + Russell. We went wild – gambled like crazy + then went to the Hacienda Spent $450. Dick called me there at [crossed out words] 6:30 (from the Sahara) So I decided no point in our getting back to see him off. We came home at about 10 am – quite drunk + broke –
We slept til about 10. Then Benny O’Bannion came over with plans for 3 pools. Had coffee + some coffee cake with us. I did a little sewing + finished off + bordered the hammer square. Dick put in a new threshold on the back door. I laid out the afghan and stacked up the sqs. in piles. We had lunch + Dick cleaned out the garage. Beautiful job. We called Daddy who had to call us back. He said he was feeling better today. I said he’d sounded pretty great yesterday. He said he’d been feeling “groggy and it wasn’t helped by several cocktails in the evening.” I said that was some kind of fancy hospital to serve cocktails + he said “They didn’t serve them, I brought it with me.” And then added morosely, “I surrendered it this morning.” I wrote Jim + Hilary + said we hoped they could visit. I wrote Colby + asked her to see the lawyer in New London (she’ll be there this weekend) about Alaria. I wrote Leon + typed a proposal for Dick. Called Jean Cahlan who said Sue Winn was going over tomorrow. Called Sue + then took the certificate from House of Stereo over to her. Stayed a while + then went to Wonder World + played the machine. Up to 420! The guy playing it yesterday played until 8:30!! Lost over $400. Oh dear. I came out about even after an hour. Bought groceries + a little booze + came home. Dick was napping. Had gone out for some wine + knew just where I was. Funny. I gave him a shave + we watched TV with dinner. I [crossed out words] crocheted 2 strips of squares together. Bed about 11:30.
Dick left without waking me today. I woke at [crossed out letter] 6:40 + no Dick. Started the day off badly for me which was odd. I called Colby to wish her Happy Birthday + we had a nice chat + then I called Chuck Neighbors about xeroxing (that’s his idea) + he told me they have a lighter xerox paper now so it’s fine by me. It’s going to cost under $200 for 3 copies and that’s just great. He said he’d been seeing Mary Parker + that she’d changed – become very aggressive etc. Not all for the good. “Needs a man.” It’s too bad because I don’t think she’ll find one this way. (I’m in complete agreement from the little I saw). I wrote a birthday card to Anthony with $10 and I wrote a letter to Moose. Paid the rent Called Belle Davis at Tropicana pools + asked her to have Dick call home. At about that point I bogged down. Spent the morning reading + finishing the Shirley Jackson books that Annie sent. Really good + very interesting on the subject of writing. Dolores Quinlan called which was really a lovely surprise. Was in town seeing a friend + will be back within a month or so. I asked her to call the yarn dept for me at the May Co. + check on that order to finish Bill’s sweater. All I need to do is sew up the facings + knit the collar. I finished the first of a 2nd pair of socks. Dick called around 2 + I told him how unhappy I was when I woke up + he was gone. I went to the P.O. + mailed letters + Moose’s pke. Then went to the Panorama mkt + put $10 more in the slot machine Came back + took a nap. Was asleep less than 20 minutes when Dick arrived with flowers. Lovely white roses. It’s the first time he ever brought anyone flowers!!! They’re just beautiful. He worked on some plans for Gene Wright + then took them over but Gene was gone. I had a diet dinner + fixed him some beef stroganoff. I’ve been pretty good on the diet now for [crossed out letter] 14 days + am down to 124. About 7 lbs from the beginning. 7 more to go. Liza called after dinner – will be driving through with Courtney in early July. There’s some trouble between her + John. He’s gone on the Wagon after beating her up while drunk. Liquor can be such a menace. With us it’s just a huge waste + source of verbal disagreement + that’s bad enough. But at least we’re getting along better + better.
Scotty called us in the morning – asked him to our party tonight. Spoke with Drue. We’d changed time til 9:00 Made more sense Drue + Dick are giving us the tickets last night for a wedding present. We went up to Chemical Bank (NO more N.Y. Trust in the name!) + met Lester + Julia + had a quick look around. Went over to Sardis for a very gay lunch with 3 bloody Mary’s for me + 3 martinis for Dick. Everything had gone so well that I told Lester to invite Julia I’d originally said no while we were still in Vegas + Dick was up tight about meeting people. Julia is handling my acct. now. She’s a gay pleasant person + seems extraordinarily with it. Lester’s dachshund [crossed out word] is named Herman + that clinched it with him + Dick. His dog is about to be a father + we’ve been offered a puppy. At the moment we’re taking it. Next stop Bank of N.Y. at 2:45 to cash a check Went to see Jim Fleming who promptly took us over to the Algonquin + bought us 2 more drinks. Then at 4:30 back to the Chelsea where we started inviting people. Co + Russell Eddy + Amelia, Drue + Dick. Mary Parker + friend (named Polly Ferguson). Mary + Saul. (They came although Mary was going into the hospital tomorrow for induced labor with second baby!) Scotty + Harriet. Harold couldn’t come. Nor Lester + I couldn’t reach Peggy Pope. Dick was helpfully pouring bourbon the while I called! We went out at 8:15 to get the liquor + snacks + glasses – etc. for the party. No time to eat dinner. Talk about dumb! All the above mentioned appeared. Dick was absent for an hour or so. Went to get the car + planned to drive to Philadelphia + “get that over with.” Thank God he changed his mind + “went into a bar to sober up.” Thank God They wouldn’t serve him so he came weaving back midway into the party. Having missed Russell in White Nehru Jacket + beads who’d been combing the local bars with Eddy as support in search of the missing guest of honor. Drue + Dick had taken a nap + almost missed the party. Arrived when Scotty did at midnight. Harriet there in plaid trimmed dark glasses upset by her face lifting but from what I remember she looked great. Mary Parker sat on Dick’s lap + I got furious. Scotty got very drunk + chased Polly F. into the closet. Mary + Polly left soon after. Dick dozing through alot. Eddy + Amelia, Dick + Drue + Scotty the last to leave but much of this is later information
Woke around 8 to discover I’d gone to bed with my lenses. Took them out + went back to bed. Eyes sore as hell. Jessie came by to say goodbye + told us Mary Jean was coming to lunch. I took a shower hoping to be able to see a little better but couldn’t. Mary Jean looked wonderful + she + Dick got along famously. “Lunch” consisted of a couple of bloody Marys!! When I asked Colby did find some crackers. I asked Colby if she wanted Alaria + she was delighted. I put the price at $15,000.00 which I know is Way under but I’d like her to have it. After Mary Jean left, Dick + I drove in to the Chelsea Hotel. The first room was so god awful I asked for another. Not too lovely but at least Dick didn’t see the first as he was parking the car. The fuse was blown + the handy man took forever to repair it. When he finally did we made love + took a nap. Up at 7 + dressed for The Theatre. Picked up our tickets + had a bite at Howard Johnsons. Our seats were second row center!!! The play “The Great White Hope” Was absolutely Marvelous. James Earl Jones was brilliant. Lou Gilbert, Jimmy Pelham + Jane Alexander were all wonderful + nobody was bad. Gil Rogers played the exchamp + was remarkably good. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe it + Dick was completely engrossed. I wanted to stop by + tell James Jones how much I liked his performance but I got cold feet + couldn’t. We called Harold Stern + went up to see him. He has only one bird left. Things haven’t been going well for him but his sense of humor remains intact We left about two. Came back to the hotel. Called Scotty but after 5 rings decided he must be asleep so went to bed.
Dick called George tonight + Irene told him “he’s Drunk!” – Also that they hadn’t worked for 3 days because of weather.
David stopped by to say goodbye –
Sent off a package of stuff to Las Vegas that we won’t be needing plus presents. Daddy joined us for breakfast. Hilary told me yesterday that he was delighted with Dick + I was so happy. Hated to say good bye to Daddy. Dear, dear Daddy. His book incidentally is in its final stages + we saw the end papers + lay out + binding + I think it’s going to be lovely. We drove down the Vermont side. Pouring rain after we left N.H. We got to Simsbury at 1:10 + Cotton looking just darling was ready in minutes. Off to Farmington where Winnie was waiting outside Main. She looks awfully well + I’m delighted She’s so happy there. We went to The Corner House for a heavenly lunch. The girls so cute. They had shrimp cocktails + oysters (4 between them) while we had a couple of bloody Mary’s + then they had steaks + I had fish + I forget Dick’s choice. We gave them each $5 after lunch. Certainly 2 easier to please children would be hard to find. We left Winnie first as she had to be back by 3 + then took Cotton back to Ethel Walkers. The drive down to Riverdale was really hairy because of the rain. We got there about 6 o’clock (Had a couple of drinks + then Russell went out for Chinese food. Anthony wasn’t his usual sunny self + I was sorry as I wanted Dick to meet him at his best. Jessie going through all the agony of being accepted at College. Syracuse has accepted her but now she doesn’t want to go. Co + Russell as always welcoming + easy to be with. We played Poker + Dick + I lost as the evening waxed on. But it was alot gayer than when Colby was losing at the beginning. Late drunk evening.
Hilary + Jim’s 2nd daughter born today.
Up fairly early. Western Union man with telegraph “Number One son’s number two daughter arrived today. Tell Mary. Love Co.” _ Called Mary. No name evidently as yet. Newcomb called a little later with same news. Also said there seemed to be some hopeful signs in his set up. I’ll keep fingers crossed. When I’m not too bogged down in my own bundle of misery. Next phone call was Mather to say that Winnie was arriving next Tuesday evening for 4 weeks. Brief chat with Winnie. Invited her + I think we’ll have fun. We did last time. I called Phemy + Stuart + we had a very long talk. They’re both seeing therapists + seem to have found it a great help. I tried to get George August who’d called when Phemy did but no luck. I spent most of the day reading Rita’s book – “The Lost and The Found” – It’s so patently autobiographical although like Muchacha distilled + made something more. (+ alot more than Muchacha). Fascinating + saddening to read. So much of death and secret agonizing fears. Spoke with Leon who said he’d been ill but was taking some pills + felt alot better. I asked him what the trouble was + he said “a touch of a nervous breakdown”!! I told Mary Parker + she said maybe I’d caught it from him. I had dinner with M.P. Jim came over later. Some agent wants him to be an actor. Jim wanted to know if 15% was too much. I felt that should be the least of his questions + told him so. Had bourbon + then scotch. Had too much Later invited Jim Klein from the Delicatessen over + he stayed + had beer + looked at Mary’s paintings (he too paints) + then stayed the night.
Up at 7:30. Picked up Bess + had a massage + steam. Went to the Safeway + bought some metracal + diet-type food. Also some greeting cards + paper. Dropped a few things in the Good Will Box. Went to Laundry + left + picked up wash + cleaning. Bob Bass called a little after 11 o’clock at Daddy’s suggestion. Sara Fergusson had contacted him + told him she was concerned about Winifred’s summer + the lack of plans for her. I told him I’d take Winnie for a while + would write Mather today inviting her. Also that I would send him (Rob) a copy of the letter + when he received it he could call Mather + ask about plans. Daddy doesn’t want to get involved + Hilary’s having a baby in July so New London doesn’t seem too feasible. The only thing I don’t feel inclined or equipped to do is to write Mather advice. Marilou is out of it at the moment. The mail brought a card from Winnie which gave me a good excuse for writing. It also bought a bundle of receipts + cancelled checks from Peter along with a letter from the Chem. N.Y. Trust Co. + a tax form for an audit of our 1966 taxes. The letter requested substantiating data for Peter’s alimony payments and our combined “professional expenses” + asked that it all be returned prior to June 12th. At first I was furious with Peter but then realized the envelope containing it all was postmarked May 31st. However he should have written 1st class on it and called me. He also sent on a note from Bill Wellborne saying to write him before the 14th of this month. Got a letter from Colby asking for immediate information on Alaria and I felt slightly beseiged! Paid bills. Dr. Richman, Dept of Water + Power and Pacific telephone. Then I went out + lay in the sun for a while. Blistering hot. Came in + read a Charity Blackstock mystery + fell sound asleep for about 3 1/2 hours. Mary Parker + I had a diet-type supper at 9. emptied the garbage + repaired to work. I got together my 1966 tax stuff + sorted it + sent it to Dick Rund + then I wrote Mather [crossed out word] + Rob Bass. I’d left the front door on the latch and a drunk wandered in. Excitement. Mary + I had a late beer about 2 am + then to bed.
Robert F. Kennedy Shot
Up about 8 – called Bess to say I’d be a little late. Went + voted at new polling place on West 7th. Electronic voting machines this time. Picked Bess up and took her to vote then had steam + massage. Went over to Melia’s insurance + gave Tony a check for comprehensive on the new car. Went to Boneshell’s + had flowers sent to Colby for her birthday. Stopped at Bank + cashed a check. Mailed Birhtday card with $5.00 to [crossed out word] Anthony. Home by 11:30 – Les called at noon. New car ready. Called James Enelow + went out to pick him up. We went to Gardena to get the new car. For some reason found myself depressed by it. Don’t like new high seats. We had lunch there + then I took James out to Harvard school. I thought it was nostalgia for the old play fields. Also that he wanted to put in a good word for a teacher of his who was leaving. Learned to my horror that his intention was to tell Father Chalmers what a rotten school he runs. Tried ineffectually to talk him out of it. Had a desire (unexpressed) to turn around + drive him home but he’s 18 years old. Troubling experience. He didn’t at least take in his written statement on why he’s a conscientious objector (slamming mostly on Harvard School.) Father Chalmers evidently handled James very well as he came out + told me he’d “modified” his statements + that actually Father Chalmers had been “reassured” by his visit!!!!??? No comment. I took James back to Pelham. Came home, napped + went to dinner with Jim Kellenberger, Mary + Paul. I do like Jim K. Paul a little offensive I felt. Jim Parker came over. He’s pretty odd these days too. Oh well – After we watched the results of today’s voting on TV. Kennedy the projected winner. Heard his victory speech at The Ambassador Hotel. Turned the sound off + had turned away as I preferred McCarthy any way when Mary Parker said look – Somebody’s been hurt.- Incredible confusion. Robert F. Kennedy was shot in the head five other people wounded. Even as we listened we could hear the sirens screaming past. He was taken just to Central Receiving. Then Good Samaritan…[continued on June 5th]
Up fairly early. 9:30 or so. Had breakfast of coffee + juice + bacon + toast. Called Daddy + told him about the address book. Called Mr. Thomas with Mary’s correct address. Called Colby + made a date to see her later tonight after her poetry meeting. Went to the Dentist at 12:00. Asked for a little less gas and spent another painful hour in the chair. He was very sweet when I left + said I was an attractive girl + had a whole life in front of me. Was so rattled I left my raincoat. Met Lester at Pierre’s on 53rd Street. We had 3 drinks and a lovely leisurely lunch. He’s going to send $5,000 to the Bank of New York for the new car. Colby Jr Dentist etc. Kept reminding me I’m “rich.” Hard to get used to the thought but of course I am. We walked back to the bank + hotel. Bill Wellborne called + I met him on Sheridan Sq. at 4:30. He’s sober as a judge + really looks well besides being in very good spirits. He passed his physical today. We had coffee on an outside terrace and then walked around the village. Laughed about Nime Schuman-Heinck, Jane Darwell + Van Heflin. And a children’s book – “Let’s all get together + do something for Margaret” – (Beware)let’s all get together + do something about Margaret” (Beware, Beware but worst of all the day will come” Let’s all get together + do something to Margaret.” If Bill were like that more often he’d be such a joy to have visit. We had a good time + dinner at a place on Waverly place or thereabouts. Went back to the hotel at 7:45. Met Colby at 8:30 at Grin’s coffee shop on 8th ave + 52nd street. Met some of her poetry group. Seemed pleasant enough. Went across to the Howard Johnsons after + had several beers + finally a drink. Read alot of her poetry + was interested. Talked alot about that. Skipped over or around any unpleasantness. Colby down on poor Newcomb but I wasn’t about to play along with anything. Still + all we had a good visit + I was glad I’d seen her. Went up after to see Harold Stern. We had a good time. Talked alot about alot. Harold likes my Christmas jabberwocky “non generation.” – It got very late and after several tall drinks I decided to spend the night there. Hardly room with the records + file cabinets
Up at 9:30. Daddy not up til 10 – Fixed breakfast. Wrote Mary and a few postcards – Timmy, Millie + Elizabeth. Went to Church and it was a lovely service and a good sermon. Mrs. Warren Sargent read the scripture for the day which was on Charity and I really felt badly at my grudge against Colby. And as I began to feel badly the grudge began to crack up like an ice floe and drift down the river. Or something. Anyway I told Daddy after that I was no longer “bitter” – I suppose I’ve been nursing it along really. We came back Daddy had sherry but I decided on another cup of coffee. We went to the Edgewood for a lovely Sunday Roast Beef dinner. Daddy got off on the old farmer with daughters just married who said to his (Daddy’s) grandfather – “The Devil’s paying me off in sons-in law” – Funny thing Daddy wasn’t applying it to his own situation. Which of course I thought he was. Only when I said from generation unto generation”. Should have kept my mouth shut! We came back + watched the Red Sox v. the Yankees. They won 8-1 Whee! And the 2nd game we listened to on the radio + they won that too 4-2. So it was a great day. I fixed clam chowder for us both and then we watched The Ed Sullivan Show and the Smothers’ Brothers. Which Daddy laughed at alot. We had a good time. Jimmy called from Washington to say he couldn’t make it up here. Nice of him to call although of course I’m sorry. Daddy to bed at 10. I stayed up + watched Mission Impossible and the late news. I leave the day after tomorrow and there’s alot I haven’t done that I’ve meant to. Bed by midnight
