We did alot today. Went to the Inn for lunch. Saw Grace Dean whom Daddy wanted me to introduce Dick to to “prove I was still in the ring.” We made all the rounds – Sport Shop, Bettys, Drugstore, Post office Saw [crossed out letters] Millie about Alaria. Got the Saunder’s address from Hilary, we went to Pine craft and bought a few odds + ends for Joyce + Irene + Jack + George. In the morning we went to Newport and bought liquor for Daddy. Got a scrapbook + fillers for Ethel. Plus five dollars. Everyone pleased I guess. After dinner we went to the High school to see David in his play. 3 one acts. Competition between Sunapee (“Hello out there”) Newport (This property is condemned”) and New London with an original adaptation of the prologue to the Canterbury Tales. “Hello out There” was unbearable. The boy just awful. The Newport entry was inappropriate but the girl a little bit interesting. The New London Show was last + best + really very entertaining. David terribly funny. We’d taken Lincoln with us + gave him a ride home with a funny little friend of his. We played cards when we got back + when Ethel joined us it got quite gay. I was big loser + Dick big winner. Evening ended with me owing him $1750 + Ethel owing him a cool thousand. Ethel sold him a piece of mince pie + was even + I went to bed with him for my debt.
Up at 6 – Peter off at 6:30 – I went at 7:15 – Got out to 910 by 7:50 + went right in. Cried alot + said I was at the end of my rope. I didn’t actually but said I was depressed + terribly unhappy. Bob asked me about Peter’s attitudes towards women + when I didn’t understand he said I kept feeling that I was causal in our current relationship but that just possibly Peter’s behavior which he called “punishment” is a symbolic punishing of women. Not me particularly. I had a little trouble accepting this. I told Bob it seemed too marvelously easy a wayout + Bob said that it was odd that both Peter + I for very different reasons couldn’t see it this way. He said our current situation was extremely malignant + damaging to my self esteem. Oh God – don’t I know it. Bob wants to see Peter + me together [crossed out word] next Monday at the same time + warned that there might be real strife but anything’s better than the current set up. Came home still crying. Call for Peter from Don Schwartz – appt. at 2:30. Got him at Bache. Later developed the call was for me – mistake at the service. Peter home for clothes – oh hell. Went out to De Patie Freling in the Valley at 2:30 – Saw Larry Sands there – from Detroit. He’s a Vice President. Whee. Nice chat. Saw Alice Backus, Olive Dunbar, Ann Stowell + Irene Tedrow. Was very wrong for the part. Nice visit with Irene. Letters from Daddy, Colby, Newcomb + Rita who wants [crossed out letters] to visit 1st 2 wks in December. I said great in an answer + looked up an address for her. I called Colby + chatted for about 25 minutes with her. Paid the phone bill – $85.00 [crossed out letters] Man came to the door whom Mitzi had bitten + said he was going to have the police come take her away. I didn’t see him but I guess that’s that. Went out to Mary’s – got there at six. Letter from Allen had arrived today and it was pretty awful I thought and I thought she should make a stand. We played bridge with Katie + Dolores. Gee – I like them. Nice women. Home at eleven – Peter home a half hour later – had gotten bored in class – gone to a girlie movie! We looked over plate blocks – bed at 1 –
Peter picked up Mitzi and she looks pretty cute I guess. Must find a home for her. Did alot of nothing today. Waxed + [crossed out letter] washed the kitchen + pantry floors. Fixed a potroast for dinner + invited Mary + Paul for dinner. After we played Oh Shit – went to bed about 11:30 –
Up about 10 – Diary I sewed two blue bandanas for [crossed out letters] Jan + mailed them with a thank you note to him + Mel + a check for $5.00 for the sewing machine. Wrote thank you note to Joyce Ryan and answered a note from Ema which came today. Also Finally fixed Timmy’s shirt. Mary + I had planned to go see a “Man For All Seasons” but decided instead to see “Blowup”. Mary told me Eleanor Luster had called + wanted to play bridge but couldn’t get a fourth. I said something very tentative + Mary called Eleanor + called me back + said I was on. I left a note for Peter + some frozen beef pies in the refrigerator. He’d said he was going to be busy working on his tapes this evening so I decided to take him at his word although it felt odd and not too happy. Mary came + got me + we went to Blowup. What an extraordinary film. Almost more than the senses can absorb at one moment. Beautiful. I called Peter after + couldn’t tell if he minded or not. We had a roast beef sandwich at “The Original Roast Beef Sandwich” and then drove out to Brentwood. We were a little early. Eleanor Luster has a nice apt + plays a very crisp decisive game – a little scary. A friend of hers, Evelyn – was there with a broken shoulder + I felt that I could play as well as she did as long as she was being distracted with pain. We played nine rubbers – until 12 o’clock. I lost $1.80 but at the worst was much further down than that. I got some lovely hands at the end. Came home – Peter had gone out to Sunset Strip – Whiskey a go go – didn’t come home til after two. We all had a drink + finally went to bed. When I think of how I’ve begged to go out in the last 5 or 6 months – it bugged me that Peter would go to the strip by himself.
