Call at 5 – The coffee a godsend. Drove to the studio in pouring rain + pitch dark. Shared a trailer with Adele Claire My part infinitesimal but she had no lines at all. Wore blue chiffon. Bob Christianson the wardrobe man. Danced with John Howard + John Forsythe Stepped on all feet. Leon came over with Bob Kennealy. Leon + I went back to the Roosevelt, I packed + checked out. We went to his office + had lunch at Frascatti’s. Then I did a few cards in his office, changed reservation to 9:30 called Dick. Left at 4:45 for Mary’s. Got there about 5:45. Patsy + Abby there looking very tall + dear. Mary in great shape + Les too. Had a good, good time Lamb dinner. Left for airport at 8:20 + got lost. Then couldn’t find Avis return. Made the plane with only minutes to spare. Dick met me with the news Annie had had a fire in her house + is coming tomorrow night. Good God!
Up at 5:30. Dick called at 5:15 and I was so rock-sound asleep I hardly remember talking to him. 2 alarms and a wakeup call helped. The thermos of coffee helped most of all. I’d forgotten tooth paste + had to brush my teeth with hotel soap. No help. Mouth tasted terrible as I made my way out to the valley. Dick Cobos the makeup man gave me some berocca drops and a stick of cinnamon gum and I began to feel human. New hair dresser – Carmen. Jean the wardrobe woman very nice. The kids as always cute and it was a good good day my scenes went smoothly and at the end the director Charles Barton told me it was “always a pleasure” working with me. Leon came out + had lunch with me. He drove his own car + I’ve never been so flattered. Went to say goodbye + thank you to Virginia Martindale but she was out of the office so left word with Lionel Thompson. Bill Demarest not working today + by the time I was through the 3 sons people were shooting a difficult scene so I didn’t see anyone. Went back to the hotel for a quick nap + then on to Timmy’s. Had a really very good time with him. brought a half gallon each of vodka + bourbon. Listened to his tape which I thought was excellent with the single + all important reservation that the “background music was too loud. Told him I’d pay for a new tape + would write him a letter to that effect which he could show Mike Dutton (whom I think I might know.) Leon called with selections for the races tomorrow. His hunches. Had meant to get some from Timmy but I left at 11:45 + there wasn’t time. We’d called Dick at the start of the evening + he said it was 130° by our thermometer in the back yard. He was taking Shirley + the guys to the Landmark. When I got back to the hotel I saw Bill Overfeldt the sunglasses man + had one drink with him. Bed at 12:45
Up + called Rm Service for breakfast. Eyedrops + facial mask + washed hair. Dick a little cranky Got to the studio in plenty of time. The wig a great success. Wore new orange dress which was my favorite anyway. Nice girl playing the other secretary. Her first “acting” part – all mildly depressing but I had a good time. Dear prop man – Bob McLaughlin. Camera man Dave – Makeup Gene. Wasn’t through til 3:30. Saw Caro Jones who won’t ever use me for anything – that was my impression – the 2 lines were a sop to Leon! Took a cab back to the hotel. Cute young driver – faintly hippie who kept saying “that’s wild” re the studio, my being in theatrical makeup etc. Dick had gone out to U.I. with Leon today to lunch + all over. We napped, made love + went to Leons for a snack before catching our 8:30 plane which was an hour late. Hated to leave Leon tonight he seemed more vulnerable than usual. Also we’d crowded too much into too little time. Got into Vegas at 10:30 + went to the Safeway. Saw Elliot as we shopped for the party. Bought all the meatball + salad ingredients + bread etc. Left the mix + chips for tomorrow. Home by 11:30. Had a nightcap + went to bed.
Dick off to the house on Bonita at 6:15. I cleaned up the house a little. Leo called to say his battery had gone dead. Dick back for coffee. Gave me work address on 5 pennies Lane. Leo called again. Not battery – fuel pump I drove out to tell Dick + George. Went to Gloria Marshall’s. Only Evelyn Ryan there in the beginning. I like her. Bought a couple of paperbacks afterwards + some groceries. Home. Made pumpkin pie for Dick. Paid mortgage – $400 this [crossed out letter] month. Dick home in between working. Leon had called + I got all excited. Called + it was for an interview at 3:30 this afternoon for a cigarette commercial. No way I could make it looking right. My hair needs cutting + it was out of the question. I felt terribly depressed after. I’d like to work so much. The mail brought a letter from Newcomb that just killed me. Talking about my “reformed life” after the theatre etc. It was very poor timing + I was so upset I couldn’t see straight. Read a Leslie Ford detective story + took a heavy escapist nap. Dick raked the driveway. I started a letter to Daddy but found my depression creeping in so put it aside til tomorrow. Dinner, TV + then bed. After miltown + aspirin.
Up at 8:30 – Another gray day. Leon off at 9:15. I made coffee + bathed + went over lines. It’s really a rather dead little scene, alas. Got to the studio at 11:00. Bob (grant) Keats makeup man told me his brother was an ex-sheriff in L.V. + his uncle was the sheriff once. Nice hairdresser – Irene. Yvonne White the script girl. I’d known her as an actress which she still is. Bob Christianson also a musician. Had never known it Leon the sound man as dear as ever + Carl the prop man there. Sid Sidman + new 2nd assistant. I thought John Stevens was he!! (only production manager for all 3 shows.) Left set at 12:30. Went to Virginia’s office. Leon not there so went down to see Pam Polefroni. Miss? Sabbagh [crossed out letters] there + we had a very gay 15 or 20 minutes. I left which [crossed out letters] is always a nice change Virginia + I met Leon at the Iron Horse for lunch. Back on set at 2:00. Worked very soon after. Went perfectly smoothly. I love working for Fred de Cordova. Wrote a letter to Bill Demarast. Bob took me to his trailer where I left it. Called Estelle Winwood from what turned out to be a prop telephone. Took me 2 dimes to realize it. Called from real phone but no answer. Decided to go over + glory be I found her. Was greeted with “I hear you inherited a million dollars.” That was Peter who’d told her + I can’t say how much it bugged me. We had a very nice visit however. Margery has married Sam Terry!! 3 weeks ago! Estelle alone. Back to Leon’s a touch after 6. Called Dick. Spoke with Timmy. And then later with Paul + Val. Leon all upset over a money deal re Val with Millie Gussee. Furious with Henry. Am so afraid he’ll let Henry go – NOW when he needs him. Called Ray + Doug but she wasn’t in. Had a little too much to drink on purpose. Chicken for dinner. Bed about 11:.30
Up at 5 – Moved furniture, paid bills – John L. Roberts, Leslie Spicer (!) sent Xmas cash to telephone Secretaries, change of address to Aftra + Sag. Dick called at 5:45. Bathed + washed hair. Broke contact lens, tidied up a bit. Called Barker Bros. Not there. Called Timmy. Left house for Warner’s at 8:30. Was in hair styling for over an hour – I’d taken my fall + the lady, Larraine Rolands did a heavenly piece of work. Shared trailer with Susan Sullivan + Shirty (?) Makeup men Leo Lotito + Tim McNally – Assistant Directors Wally Someone + Joe Ellis. Didn’t work til almost 5 – Simulated sunshine – Darkness at noon Abbie Dalton + Fred Gwynn the leads. Stillman took some shots for me. Stopped for gas + dog food. Didn’t get home til 5:45. Thought I’d smelled smoke on the way up Lookout but didn’t give it 2nd thought. Couches + bed + chair all look lovely. Timmy had called Dr. Smith who said Hummy has “Kennel Cough” + to give him charcoal. Only had terpin Hydrate + not too appealing. Got dinner all ready. Glorious Timmy had peeled + parboiled little onions + started the pot going. We had a drink + about 8 o’clock Doug called to say he + Joan had been turned away at base of Lookout by fire trucks. Road closed. Radio cars there + TV. Big fire. We could smell smoke but couldn’t see a thing. Called fire dept who said it was a big fire but under control. Had called Leon for Val’s number who turned out to be there. Invited them as Val knows the back way but they couldn’t come. Timmy + I ate heavenly dinner + I gave him a large bowl to take home + froze enough for 2 dinners myself. Timmy left at 11. I fell asleep on new couch. Bed at 3 after waking up.
Up at 8:30. Futzed about. Spoke with Paul Goolnick + have made arrangements for delivery Monday afternoon. Leon called at 10:30 + I bathed, dressed + went to the office to meet him. We went to the Reporter to put in an ad for “My 3 Sons” and were too late. Met Homer Harmon whom I liked alot. Luckily, Hal someone was there from Variety + we placed the ad with him, quarter page $89. We went out to Warner Bros. + had lunch with Bert + Barbara Remsen. Barbara has lost 10 lbs + looks really emaciated. Strain of the last few weeks. Mrs. Remsen left Bert + Guy the bldg on Doheny (13 units) and the affairs are in a terrible muddle. It was a good lunch and maybe Leon + Bert did some business for future reference. Took Leon back to the office and went to visit Humbug + Barkis. Dick Showalter put them through their paces and then I tried it with them. Really am awfully impressed. Met George Barnes + liked him alot too. Next stop Timmy’s. Had a cup of tea + then we drove out to the Palisades. He for his flu shot and I for my appt. with Leslie Spicer. I’m not the ideal candidate evidently for an I.U.D. and guess I’ll just stick with the pills. It was a mildly depressing visit. Saw Doug after + he gave me a refillable Rx for Enovid E. Timmy had trouble with his car + took it to the standard station where the guy showed him how to drive it without stalling until the carburitor is flushed. We followed Doug home + had a really nice visit with Doug + Joan. They’ve just rented their place to Ruth Gordon + Garson Kasin. Showed Joan the plans for the house. After several drinks we came back East + had dinner at Robaire’s. Timmy very gay and it was a funny evening. Topped off with a brandy at Larrabee Home at 11:30.
Jimmy wrote Leon again + sent him a copy of “We propose: A Modern Congress” Raining –
Picked up Jerry Devine on the street on my way to Leon’s
Up at 5:30. Dick got up with me. Took a bath + gathered up a few dresses and my long hairpiece. Left the house about 6:35 + got to the studio at 7. So nice to see everyone again. Bob Keith covered up my still black but improving eye and the hairdresser did a great job with my fall. Wore Green + black Tchin Tchin dress with jet beads + Benjamin Franklin glasses. My face still a trifle swollen but only enough to make me look quite different which is good. Bill Demarest had been ill, the scene went very well + Fred de Cordova was laughing. It should be funny. He told me “it was a pleasure as always.” to work with me. Stopped in + saw Ed Hartman. Virginia had told him what happened + we talked about it briefly. I’d been thinking lately of Mr. Rice saying “My dear child, you’re the kind of girl who would heal instantly” then I resented the remark now I know it’s true and am deeply grateful. Came home by 11 o’clock. Dick sleeping + I went back to bed. We got up around 3 and I fixed eggs + bacon. I’m becoming extremely attached to Dick. In fact I love him but it’s such an unlikely relationship in many ways. Certainly physically however it’s a great one. I went out to Mary’s at 6:30 with booze for the evening. Timmy came at 7 o’clock and then Rick + Eve Lee. Les didn’t get there til after ten + Mary was upset. As soon as he got there I left after explaining I’d been up since five. Good party. Raced back to Dick. Watched end of Star Trek + beginning of Hitchcock. Then went to bed.
Up about 8:00 – Henry had made coffee. Saw him off about 9 o’clock + went back to sleep again almost immediately. Leon had said he’d call in the morning but he didn’t + I slept til past one – Rushed about getting dressed + cleaned up for Culver city. Got there about ten after 2. Wardrobe ladies Grace + Julia. Fitted for costume – nice uniform size 10. Fit perfectly. Had to be shortened. Nice shoes. No cap. Ate a sandwich at the commissary + came home. Message from Lyle about the Actor’s Studio production of the new Irvin Shaw plays at UCLA. Wanted me to go tonight. Called him to say I couldn’t. Pleasant chat. Paul called – suggested he call Lyle about the show. I spent the afternoon reading + knitting. Have almost finished the back of Bill’s sweater. Tried to call Bill but couldn’t get him. Went to the Erdmans at 6:30. Sharon had fixed a lovely chicken dinner. We had a few drinks + chitchat then dinner + bridge. Alot of fun despite a fairly desperate family contretemps with Erica going on off stage + in shifts sobs filtered through from moment to moment. Poor kid – fourteen is a ghastly age. Came home about midnight. Thought Dick might possibly call from Vega + sat up + knit + read but all was silence.
Heat 99 – Paul in + out all day – packing + cleaning + putting out the garbage which was nice. A letter came for Mary from Shirley + Bill which I read her. They have room for her including a bed. Good news + I think she was much relieved. Her plane to Chicago leaving at midnight. Another day of knitting + reading. Seri Murad called to say he’d like the apartment but now I’m not sure. Told him had another prospect and I’d let him know by Saturday. Mary C. came over in the afternoon for her bridge table + we had a nice visit. Jane popped in + out to pick up her sunglasses. Mary suggested I post a notice about the apt. in County General. After she left I called Doug who goes in there on Wed + who said if I left the notice at the desk for him in the morning he’d see it was posted where the residents + interns gather. I drove over to Leon’s about 7:30. He submitted me today for a part that sounds just great – a salvation army worker. Will keep fingers crossed. We had cold chicken, cold artichoke hearts + cold asparagus for dinner – preceded by caviar. It was a funny evening but I left early – about 10 o’clock. Called Leon when I got home + then had a beer + knitted + read some more. I’m loving David Copperfield. Wept copiously this morning at the death of his Mother. I guess it brought back Mother reading it to me.
Called Bert today about Phil Paulson + made date to take my film script over on Friday
Up at 7:15 – Felt quite tired – Another hot day and my eyes were sore. Called Millie to tell her key was under mat + left some money for her to get some lunch with as well as her check + a fairly huge pile of laundry. It was a good day on the set. My final little scene made everyone laugh which was certainly unexpected to me. And I suppose the supreme compliment was one little guy who came over + told me it was “perfect casting” I was just right for the part. God knows I’m not but that’s what the audience is supposed to feel. Was finished by noon so went over to the three sons set to have lunch with Bill Demarest. At lunch he told me Charles Barton had said I was very good. We ate with Pat [crossed out letters] Miller, Adele + Patrice Gray. Some funny stories from Bill Demarest. Saw Barbara Feldon afterward + visited with her briefly in her trailer, goodbye to Bill + home by 2:45 – The house beautiful + by four the laundry done + Millie taken home. I packed + made some calls – Bert for lunch next week. Annie who wasn’t in. Ditto Henry. Leon, Timmy and Mary who’ll be joining us in Vegas Sunday morning. none of the kids there to say good bye to except Sue. Had nice letter from Bill Wellborne – The 2nd from Florida or third + he’s in great shape. God that does make me feel good. Visited with Mary + left her + Humbug who was curled up in a reproachful heap + took off for the airport. The traffic unbelievable + I was scared I’d miss the plane but made it. Wrote first half of a birthday letter to Daddy on it. Arrived to find one bag – the one with Mary’s stamps, Leon’s sweater + cosmetics (lenses too) hadn’t gotten there. Filled out the forms + was given a courtesy “over night kit” from Western Airlines. Newcomb there in front to meet me at the Hacienda. Hadn’t realized until I saw some of the dealers that it’s the same place Peter + I stayed at. I played [crossed out letters] 17 for Timmy + Bill Demarest + lost then played + won for a while (short while) Newcomb to bed at 3 am having been up since 5) and I went to bed 2 hours later having cut my losses a little at blackjack. Had gay evening.
Sen. Ed Muskie Vice presidential nominee.
Was over at Studio City at 7. Makeup man Dick Cobos liked him. Hairdresser Armiene- funny lady + the hair band worked marvelous. Thelma the wardrobe lady a bit of a pain kept telling me she’d never seen anyone perspire so much + that I really had a problem. She’d been supposed to put shine in + forgot. Therefore I was late getting on to the set + she made my day by telling the AD (Richard Learman) that I had “a bit of an accident.” (Christ!) Charles Barton, the director looks like Mr. Magoo + couldn’t have been nicer. I played the part a little fruity and I suppose he liked it as nothing was said to the contrary. Had free time between 11 and two. Went to Ed Hartman’s office + autographed the book for him and we sat + talked for about 20 minutes then I went over to the “three sons” set. Old home week. Barbara Morrison was working + we had brief chat. Fred de Cordova kissed me + so did Bill Demarest. Very supportive to be so well remembered. Went to the trailer for a bit + went over the 2 speeches for the afternoon + wrote in diary. Went to the commissary for lunch about 12:15 and was joined by Bill Demarest + then Ed Hartman. Bill had gotten upset with Fred who’d meant to be funny but was needling him about lines. Too bad. I went back to Bill’s trailer with him for a few minutes and he told me to put $1 on #17 when I got to Vegas. Oddly enough so did Timmy (Bill gave me the buck) He invited me to lunch tomorrow. Saw Virginia Martindale. Other AD on the show John Gaudioso. The kids very cute + “Buffy” a darling. Ken Tobey, Pepe Hern, Sue Casey other actors. Brian Keith pleasant although very withdrawn. Was finished my bit around 4:30 but they kept me til nearly 6. Raced to the Pairon [crossed out word] Restaurant at the music center for Moose’s birthday party. Annie not there as the onstage girl drummer had broken her wrist + Annie had gone to the hospital with her. Fritz, Joe, Phil (?) Moose, Vicky (?) + Allen(???) Pleasant group but very rushed + I wasn’t dressed or with present. Took Hummy to the store + bought dog food + hairbands + beer. Had 2 of the latter with Mary Parker – 9 am call tomorrow. The heat unbearable. Looked at tomorrow’s lines + put in 7 am wakeup. I guess professionally it was a very good day today.
Woke at 6:30 Slept again til 8. Was up when Lyle came to wake me + scared him silly. We went + woke Jimmy + had breakfast again with our little lady. John Howard Lawson spoke after breakfast. I called Mather before listening. Good speaker + very warm -kindman. Talked in terms of committment. Looking for a synthesis of the Brechtian epic + Living newspaper presentation. Sets enormously high standards. After his talk drifted over to Rose 12 to work. [crossed out letters] Jimmy joined me + I ended up cuing him again. Should have been firmer less frantic about needing to work by myself a bit. Instead just got uptight. Left lunch to go back to work + pasted + cut + put together the fresh script. Was miserable during afternoon rehearsal. Jimmy making token use of his script – I quite denpendent on it. A few things were all right. I cried a few stupid tears in the ladies’ room. Back to cabins at 4:30 – Took a nap after looking over script again. Bathed + dressed. Have a sore throat + can’t tell whether or not it’s psychosomatic. Drink before dinner. Joined by Mather + Winnie who did nothing all day. No swimming, no walking, boating. Nothing. Oh dear. Nice dinner but I left before it was really over. Read through script once more – went over to the main building fortified with cough drops. Throat quite bad. Lyle lecture went well – so did the reading. I really took off in “Our Town” could feel it happen. Got all the others too – despite a flub or two in the Joan Levy “Bury the Dead” scene. Was later told I had “magic” – I really “reached” them. blah blah blah. All nice. Mather + Winnie liked it. Left after 2 drinks. I sat around + drank then went on to a party at Rose 11 with a Seymour someone. Got drunk like an idiot. Good time but throat sore as hell.
The cats fighting at 4:00 a.m. Woke Humbug + then me. Had to let him out. End of sleep. Just dozed off again when he started up. Winnie this time – couldn’t sleep + had mosquito bites. Found some witch hazel + tried to get back but not much use. Alarm at 5:45. Bathed + washed hair. Went up to see Winnie who came down + had breakfast with me. Cued me again. I took off at [crossed out words] 7:30. Had very busy day today. Called Jimmy Goodwin who could make it + he brought Winnie for lunch. Also saw Florida Friebus who came to see Joan Thomkins + ran into Arthur Gersher at the cafeteria. Jimmy + Winnie + I sat with him. Back at the set I introduced Winnie to Bill Demarest and the Livingston boys + Jim Hennigan + Fred de Cordova whom I like enormously. Fred said “aren’t you proud of your aunt” + Winnie made a non-committal sound + he said “oh putting you down isn’t she?” to me + then said he was proud of me. Fred also said during the day that I looked good in the rushes and that I was just fine + very good etc. 3 or 4 times + it made me feel marvelous. Bob Christianson the wardrobe man very nice + I really had a good day from every point of view. Was doing what I like + doing it well with all the pleasure that brings. Bill Demarest hugged me at the end + said it was a pleasure to have me work on the show, blah blah + would I come + have lunch with him sometime. I said I would + I will. I felt almost tearful leaving – would like to work with that whole bunch again – especially Fred de Cordova. Got home at 6:15. Was pretty knocked out. Winnie had our dinner all fixed + laid out. Just one more day of our diet. She measured herself + says she’s lost 3 inches on her waist. That’s pretty damn good if true. We’re going to go on Sego when this is over. Rae O’Dell is caught up with me and I have to start reading more of Rita’s stuff. A pkge came today but was registered + I wasn’t here. Will have to pick it up tomorrow. Izzy called but wasn’t home when I tried her. Tried Leon – no luck either. I took a nap for a couple of hours. Got up to watch “Family Affair” + then I Spy. Peggy Pope called but I was so groggy she said she’d call back in the morning. We went to bed about midnight.
Up at 7 am. Diary. fixed grapefruits for the day. looked over script. Called Bess to change appt. to Sat. Woke Winnie at 7:30. She came down + had breakfast but had painful back sunburn so we decided to change her appt. too + she went back to bed. I called Peggy Pope to see about coming to lunch at Studio City with Winnie on Monday. She’s going to be in San Francisco alas and then is going back to New York in ten days. Rae arrived just as I was leaving and I gave her some more poems and the first half of the novella. Forgot to say goodbye to Winnie as I was late starting. Got to Studio City at 11:00. Ready to go at 11:45. Lunch at 1:30. Ate with Sarah Selby + were joined by Joan Thomkins and then Fred de Cordova. (Gee I like him). So glad to get to know Joan T. at long last. We have an enormous list of mutual friends from Hal Gould to Ben Wright to Lyle to Florida Trubus + on + on. Teary unexpected moment at lunch about divorce. Afternoon dragged on. Two makeup brushups but didn’t work. At 4:30 they told Bill Demarest + me to go home – they decided to cut that scene. (I have no lines in it) Saw Ed Hartman + Virginia Martindale + both said yesterdays rushes look good. Betty Lamm stopped by + I promised to call her. Came home by way of Safeway, bought lovely steak. Timmy had called – he’s back – Oh dear oh dear. Tried to tell him how busy I am. Winnie getting Tonsillitis again. She’s been supposed to have a tonsillectomy + wants to have it here. Called Doug + have appt for tomorrow. We wrote Mather letters + I showed Winnie mine so it wouldn’t be in conflict. Then discovered after we’d mailed them that she’d told Mather she had tonsillitis again + wanted a tonsillectomy while I’d written she was fine. I was pretty annoyed. Mary Parker went with us to see Rosemary’s Baby – good film. Discovered while waiting inline in Westwood that Winnie had left front door unlocked. Oh Lord – Nobody robbed the house + this too shall pass.
