Up about 8:30 or so. Wrote Peter a Halloween card which he thanked me for. Called Campbells + ordered “The Doctor’s Story” for Daddy. At 10 – went to Contour + weighed 116 lbs. – Whee! Then went shopping at Ohrbachs for some shoes. Got two nice pair. On a hunch called the service before going to Pat Walker’s. Had a 2 o’clock appt. at MP.O. for a new detergent called “Bonus.” Dashed home + washed my hair, made up + went off. Imagine my surprise to see Rosalie Walton. Really was so pleased to see her. Gave her our address + phone number + asked her to call us. I have a call back on Friday. Didn’t even read the part I’m to read for them – it’s all a rather cute idea. Went from there to Pat Walkers. Was measured + found that I’d stayed almost exactly the same. Had lost 1/2 inch on my hips + 1/2 inch on my knees (??) but put on 3/4 inch on my abdomen – as it’s my period that seems fairly logical. The transistor radio made the time pass alot easier. Came home after shopping for metracal + cider + Halloween goodies. Called Mary who’d called me – told her Peter was on the Invaders. Called Hilary + had quite a long chat. Read her Daddy’s card + she thought it was very touching, which I suppose it also is besides the other things. What a good person Hil is. Was so glad I’d called. Went up to see Mary + Paul + fix trick or treat bags. Had nine callers in all – the last six were in a rather sinister group. My Faith was rewarded. I gave Mary + Paul our fish dish + ate metracal for dinner. We all watched the Invaders. Ben Wright opened the show! Very dreary show but Peter’s part the best + he looked very good + distinguished. knit alot on sweater + waited up for him til 12:30 – he’d gone out for coffee after + had been through at 10:30 – Think he could have called – but at least he was in a good mood.
Up at 6:30 – Peter off at 7 and I left at 7:30 for the Palisades. Had an interesting hour with Bob. Thought of so many things I haven’t for a long time + set off a great train of thought when I left – about my childhood – about old people-about my resistance to change. Home by 9:15 – Called Bonds + Texaco about the credit cards. Changed the sheets etc. + went for my steam + massage. Weight after steam down to 117 1/2. Figure in another month I should be at about 115 to stay. (+ not after a steam bath!) Went shopping for a few dinner items. Home – called Arthur to say we couldn’t make it tomorrow and as he’d fixed our lunch already changed my mind + said we would depending of course on Peter. Called Dr. Smith + made an appt for Sunday to take Mitzi in to be spayed. It’s going to cost $35 plus her shots – Still think it’s worth it. She’s an affectionate dog + might have a chance at a home if she’s fixed + fixed up a little. Called Sheldon Andelson about my license suspension + he said not to worry. Fixed a leg of lamb for dinner. The afternoon very hectic with the telephone. Leon trying desperately to get Peter + I couldn’t locate him – I tried the club 7 times. Tried Bache before. Somehow, though, it all worked out + Peter got out to Four Star for a Big Valley interview. It looks like he may have two jobs next week + both good ones. But the one he wants is The Big Valley + he won’t know til Monday. Hope by holding out he doesn’t mess the other + lose the one he wants too. Peter made $900 in “paper profits” today on the market – pretty exciting. Mary called to say she’d been accepted by the L.A. School system as a substitute teacher. Good news. I vacuumed the office + put on the new tablecloth etc. Mary + Paul came to dinner which was very good. Paul helped take out the garbage – actually he took it all out. We played Red Dog + Peter was the big winner – I the big loser. We wound up the evening with a game of – Oh Shit – Fun –
Up about 9 – wrote diary. Shortened slip, washed hair. Jean Thomas called with an 11:30 appt. at Jack Tinker + Partners at 1414 Sixth Ave to see a Pat Kirkland. I left the house at 10:50 + spent the next half hour trying to get a cab + getting soaking wet instead. Ended up 15 minutes late taking the B’way Bus + running across town on 58th St. I don’t know which busses + which subways around here. The reading was a voice over for “chock plus Iron tablets” + was a very funny script. My third taping was pretty good but I don’t know if they liked it or not. My being late didn’t help. Pat Kirkland used to be with United Talent. Knows Peter + is “a great friend of Parker’s”. Had lunch downstairs in the coffee shop. Went to the bank + got some money. Got copies of Annie’s keys. bought lightbulbs + groceries. Came home. Drue called + we’re having dinner on Sunday night. Jean Thomas called to say the Kool appt. has been postponed + Scotty called. We’re going to try to see a show or something Sunday afternoon to avoid drinking. I read another detective story + fell sound asleep. Woke about 8:30. Wrote a note to Susan enclosing $15 for her birthday and then started a letter to Peter – about midway I decided to call him + there he was – said he’d been about to call me. Mary on the sauce again. Newcomb made the mistake of writing her a letter which was very disapproviong – How I do wish Newcomb would think 15 times before, during + after every single letter he writes + then not send a good many of them. But at the same time that’s Newcomb + to expect him to be an amateur psychologist is too much. Our phone call was interrupted by “an emergency call from Mrs. Mary Enelow” – same old tricks. Peter called me back + it seems Mary was expecting a computer date, was gulping vodka + wanted Peter to call her in 45 minutes. She said “I hope you weren’t talking to my sister.” Peter said he was + she said “Oh my God” + hung up. Oh Lord I wish she would get off his back. I’ve had it as far as emotional involvement in Mary’s life. My own needs all the attention I can give it. I called Harold Stern after I finished the letter to Peter + went down there at about 11 – Harold’s place just a little fuller + he has at the moment 3 birds – also too much work + not happy with what he’s turning out. He gave me some sample interviews. He played Conan Doyle + Rudyard Kipling for me. How extraordinary to hear those voices – I had 2 drinks there + then came home laden with material + a lovely envelope of stamps for Coco. Called Hayes + Arthur Kingsley sounded as though he were cracking up.
Up late and hungover – Peter slept til 1:30 – We had only the briefest talk before he went off to see Dr. Brooks. I called Don Schwartz + asked him if he’d heard anything about the soap opera – I didn’t get it. Oh well. I thought yesterday I’d missed out somehow – any number of reasons. Phone rang and it was Ruth Burch asking me to go read for Bill Tregoe + Curtis Roberts for the part of the wife (Ruth) in “Blithe Spirit” – appt. at 4:45. By then it was after 2:00. Took a bath, made up and put on new dress from Bond’s. Drove downtown to Vari-Ad to pick up the copy for the souvenir booklet – It looks just great. Then went out to Cory Street in West L.A. to read. Stopped en route for a sandwich. Although I’m not familiar with Blithe Spirit I gave a good reading. – It involves six weeks in Chicago which was a bit of a surprise but the way things are now with Peter + me it might be good for us. Bill Tregoe had a cancer operation about a month ago + is now having cobalt treatments. The Tumor was self contained but he’s not taking any chances. Said he’d never been so afraid in his life and I can believe it. Came home via the store + bought some dog food for Humbug – Was depressed over the thought of six weeks away being a “good thing” – Peter had been given some “anti-hostility” pills – his name and had taken one. Dr. Brooks had told him it was very dangerous to drink in a highly depressed state – Which he’s in so had prescribed the pills (“elavil”.) Made arrangements with Mary Parker – ($5.00) for the weekend, Peter cashed a check and we left about 8:30 – stopped en route for a sandwich. Peter terribly tired + odd feeling – Whether the pill or hangover or combination plus a codeine earlier who can say. We got in about 11:30 – First the Crystal Pier + then to Danny’s. June not there. Arthur Lyman is in town and I gather there have been many late nights. Met a Bernard E. Reilly + Jim Isherwood. Saw Ida. Went back to our cottage at 2 am –
Was up at 7:30 – coffee + diary + washed hair- called Pat Walker to change my 2 o’clock appt to 12:00. Called Lucille Glasman at vari-ad + said I’d be in later today with the material. Drove out to Columbia Ranch weather unbearably hot – in the 90’s. About 5 or 6 people there + about 4 more came in. Very brief interview – had to react to some off camera dialogue. Thought it went well but didn’t know. They said they’d decide in an hour. Went to Pat Walkers. Came home – found 2 messages from Don Schwartz. And glory be I got the job. My first this year and my first through Don. Whee! Shoots on Thursday. Took off my makeup + combed my hair back to look a little sicker and older + tireder + changed into my green check for Bert Metcalf. Got to Screen Gems annex at 3:00 Wringing wet. Looked at script ghastly personality type named Marlene somebody came in. Went to annex to read – and there my God, was Wes Kenny. Such a delight to see him – he’s gotten very thin. Read for him + Bert Metcalf + Mrs. Corday and another man whose name I forget. I think I read very well. Bert Metcalf is good to read with. Left and drove downtown to Lucille Glassman. That’s going to be alot more expensive than I’d thought $10.00 a page. To be picked up Friday. Oh well. Came back via Carl’s – bought pork chops, broccoli and salad fixings. Peter home + worked on his car. Harvey kibitzed I did some laundry at the laundromat then took Humbug to the store – what a difficult passenger he is at present. Fixed pork chop casserole, marinated green beans + mushrooms, and broccoli. Jim Parker joined us for a late dinner. Druscilla called at ten and she + Dick are getting married on August 4th. We spoke to both of them. I’m so glad. I took Humbug for a walk on his new leash and one could have thought I was strangling him. Timmy called + asked us to call him in the am as he’d had several sharp pains. I finished “Doctor Zhivago” – what a truly beautiful book
3 wakeup calls managed to get Peter up + finally me this morning – anniversary not only of Lincolns assassination but the sinking of the Titanic. At first I didn’t think I’d make it to my appt but by some sort of miracle did Not only that but looked + felt, by the time I pulled up at Lee Lacey, very good! Jo Kranitz out sick again – Jennifer Shull very pleasant + welcoming. Saw Margaret Wheeler, Monroe Arnold, Pitt Herbert + 3 or 4 others I don’t know as well – very gay. As for the interview – I didn’t feel I did anything spectacular in the way of impressing but we’ll see. Drove to Don Schwartz’s to do a tape for Jimmy Wasson. Saw Peter there he went in with me + then on to the club. Giggled half the time I was with Jimmy but did do two tapes without any retakes + he was very pleased. I stopped by to see Reve Barskin + say hello. Then to the Safeway where I cashed a check for $40 – oh the joy of having a little cash in hand whether [crossed out word] we can afford it or not. I bought all sorts of fruits + came home + made a glorious fruit compote + fixed [crossed out words] broccoli, corn + got the hamburgers ready to cook. Cleaned the kitchen + futzed about. Jim Parker came by about 5:30 to see Peter. Then he + Diane listened to Peter’s tape which is coming along. He did some good work on it + has fixed up the Dental [crossed out word] sound effects + done some other much needed polishing. I watched Henry Jones on TV in the Man from Uncle + then we both watched the first 45 minutes of “The Investigation” – a Nazi warcrimes play – I couldn’t take more. Saw the end of the Avengers + called up Timmy who was in a blue funk today. Really swivelville [?].
Jack Donaldson called to say he didn’t have the film. He must have left it with Reve or lost it. We staggered up + got dressed for the appt. Had started to go in separate cars but then decided to go with Peter even though it meant his driving me home before going to the club. I said I was sorry for what I said last night, that I wouldn’t leave him, that he meant more to me than children but I don’t think he really cared. I have no way of knowing. Oddly enough we had a very good appt. Everyone laughed alot. Came home to find out the appt. had been cancelled but Don couldn’t reach us in time. No wonder they laughed. But we couldn’t have lost anything by it so what the hell. Peter went to the club. I futzed about-Called Jo Krantz who was home sick. Don is having Lionel change his last name to Grant. I lay in the sun a little and then went to bed for a while. We heated up last night’s stew for dinner. Mary Parker had to come home from work today-with a throwing up hangover. We went to see “The Devils” at the Mark Taber forum. Saw Gordon outside, saw Ditta, Eleanor Peters + a friend + Doug Lambert + a friend. Very dreary play really + not overly well directed. Nicely staged but not directed. Liked the male lead-Joyce Ebert in the Anne Bancroft part got very tedious. We left after the 2nd act at 11 o’clock. Also Fran Spaner + Ed Balin. I wore my Korean evening coat-big deal.
Up around ten-Peter paid bills-Parker, Hayes, B.L. Orary + Lauria’s – we’re really low. I called friend of Lyle’s, Lucretia Cole + will see her on Tuesday. Don’t really know to what end but Lyle wants us to meet. I washed my hair + dressed up in a poodle-type blue dress with little blue bow in my hair + went off to VPI to read for part of a poodle. Funny call-some very nice actresses there. They ran 30 seconds of film on everyone. No telling what happened for a while but felt I was out-poodled by at least one girl. Fixed ham rolls + raw vegetables + carrots + salad + rolls + strawberries for dessert. Don arrived around 7:30-Mary Parker + Diane joined us. Pleasant evening. Good dinner + think Don was interested in Diane. Paul came in about 11:45 and I gave him some dinner and Don worked out a composite for him. I modeled my poodle outfit. Party broke up around 1:30-Paul stayed down a while + we watched Humbug + Burly play-Bed about 2:30-So tired. Humbug met one of Shana’s puppies today and was frightened silly-Mother called from Phoenix-I’d thought they left last week. Hil + Jim still there too. Nice chat although so unexpected I had nothing to say.
Up around 10-Don Schwartz called-Is sending me up for the part of a poodle on a Winston commercial-Said he needed a Bulldog type and I suggested Bernie Fein. I called Bernie who was willing + free + thought it was a funny idea. He (Bernie) also chatted with Peter + said he’d send him a script of their next production-Enemy of the People. I called Don back to clear Bernie. I got a call back for Sunkist Orange at 4:30 this afternoon. Peter off to the club. I finished my letter to Chuck Neighbors + wrote one to Bill Welborne – got both off in the 2 o’clock mail. Letter from Colby saying I was to be responsible for the programs for Mother + Daddy’s Golden Wedding party. All a little confusing-will have to write or call her. Card from Sue Glick saying they’d seen Peter on the Andy Griffith’s show. Elizabeth called + I was so depressed I’m sure she wished she hadn’t called. Paul came down with a 3rd set of pictures-taken by Gary Young and we chose about 21 between us. Peter home at 3:45-I left at 4:00 with a Miltown under my belt. I seemed to be one of the only girls there on call back + they asked me my availability once again but I didn’t feel as good about it as yesterday. Came home via the Safeway + shopped for dinner. Had mentioned going out for dinner but it seemed suddenly very stupid. We should save it til we have something to celebrate-if ever. Hamburgers, salad, turnips + carrots. Went to the Civic playhouse-Marvin Kaplan off + his understudy on. The whole play didn’t strike me funny tonight – I know it too well + suddenly the chart business was alot too close to home. Had a beer with Martin Brooks after + came home.
Up earlyish – Pottered about-Hemmed my green check housewife dress. Steve + Pam came down + said goodbye + thank you. Went out + got me 3 packs of cigarettes then wouldn’t let me pay them. I washed hair + made up + drove to Lee Lacy on Melrose Place only to discover I was supposed to be at 6912 Santa Monica Blvd. Whipped over. Only one other girl there-everyone else marvelously ferocious character men. Had nice time waiting. When I went in the director (Jim Weir?) knew me from “Warrior’s Husband” of all things!! Read (or rather repeated-no script) well. Funny idea altho the mother (me) very straight But they liked me-I could tell + they asked my availability-Oh God am I available. Came home-cashed check. Finished first page (both sides single space) of letter to Chuck Neighbors-It’s quite painful to go back over all that period of frustration (especially from the point of view of my current frustration-will nothing I do come out right?) We went to Timmy’s at 7:30-Watched Daktar, the Invaders, Peyton Place and a special on England + Texas. Good dinner + no necessity to talk which was a pleasure to me. Dale had a baby boy early this am. To be named Steven. Mary Parker goes to work for Kelly tomorrow + Paul’s unemployment has been suspended for six weeks pending a hearing (also thanks to Kelly). We’ve all “Fallen on Hard Times” as Mary Parker said to Jim.
Hangover supreme- Peter off to the club again with the car-I got up around eleven + made the bed and then shortly thereafter just lay down again. Called Doug + he doubled my thyroid dosage-2 a day now. Told me to call him again in 2 months. Got nice letter from Anne in a St. Patrick’s day card. Also Peter got a check for $86.00 from Bayer Aspirin. Nothing to flip over but better than a poke in the eye-Mary came in with her hair around 5:30 and I must say George outdid himself-it really looks just great. Peter had a fairly good appt. Called Don after. He bought me a record called “How to Train Your Dog”-will start playing it tomorrow. We went to Timmy’s for dinner-pleasant evening. Delicious dinner-lamb curry. Came back about midnight. Shana had had one puppy. Diane’s door closed as evidently Shana is a nervous wreck. Mary + Paul came downstairs for a beer. We took some Polaroid pictures of Mary’s + my haircuts-Two very funny ones of us [crossed out writing] with the heads just on the edge of the table. John the Baptisty-a cute one of Humbug and one very straight one for Peter to show Don tomorrow. If I had a car I’d drop in to the office myself but what can I do. I checked the service before we went to bed + discovered that Mary had called + asked me to call back-but by then it was too late.
Busy day and a bit of a shocker-Washed + set hair. Peter up + went to the bank for us both. Picked up Annie’s Rx and mine for Miltowns. I drove out to Filmways-at least they redid the waiting room which is nice. Met Charlie Smith who’s playing the lead in the whole RCA series of commercials. Very pleasant. Saw alot of actresses I know. Read rather well I though then chatted with Gloria Lord [crossed out writing] who’d come in just as I was called. Talked about that evening + mentioned the woman named Mambo who’d said she was going to have a party-I said “I guess she never had that party after all,” Gloria said yes she did-at my look she went on to say that Mambo wanted to invite me but not Peter who’d gotten very hostile with her husband Irwin. The odd thing is that my one reaction was one of great responsibility. I guess I’m really a hell of a poor wife in alot of ways-I’m so involved with my own problems that I am unsupportive. With a promise to call Gloria + Terry I left + started thinking about changing my ways. It’ll be hard but I am going to try. Went to Film Fan Foto and left my pictures. Went to Don’s and then went to Manny’s to have the blue velvet altered + pick up the already finished ones. Got home about 2:15-Gave Peter the car for the club. Futzed about,, fixed dinner-just the salad + rolls etc. Peter had already made his shish-kebab. Dr. Ware + Eve arrived about 7;20. As always with them a very nice evening. Humbug was a great success. They left about 11:30 and Peter + I had some beer together + went up briefly to see Mary’s new sculpture line-by a mythical + mathematical sculptor named Philip Now-very funny.
Woke at 11:15 this am. Lyle had been by at 10 to take me to the music center + had pounded at the door to no avail. Saw only a startled Mary Parker. Thank God, remembering my appt, he had the grace to call us + get the service to let him ring through. Somehow I managed to get to the appt. Read with Jack Cassidy (played Lurch on the Addams Family) + read as well as the other time but felt a little doomed. Ran into Don Schwartz there-fleetingly. Then drove down to the music center parked in the garage + presented myself for the addressing of envelopes. Joyce Rosenberg was there + very friendly + pleasant. [crossed out writing] Went to lunch + brought me back coffee which was pretty damn decent. Lyle stopped in + I thanked him again. the head girl on the envelope detail was a dreary named Dorothy Blass. She had a friend there though named Belle something who had a little humor so the afternoon blurred by quite happily. I kept going down the hall to see Lyle who said offices weren’t my milieu. But I did do alot of actual work. Came home at 5 and took an hour or two nap and then we went off to Timmy’s for dinner. Came home fairly early + went to bed immediately as I have a 11:10 appt at Filmways tomorrow-
I got up early and washed + set the hair again-Peter drove me over to my 10:30 appt in the kaiser-I’d been ready to take a cab but he said that was silly-MPO the product was a new facial cream called “cheek to cheek” (!) Ran into Ann Seymore, Geraldine Wall + Patsy Garrett-the latter two both friends of Lyle’s who begged to be remembered. Learned from Ann that John McGiver will be going back East momentarily-we must try to get him to dinner. I read well for the commercial but didn’t feel I was too right-a little old perhaps alas. The old kaiser brought us all the way home-whereupon we both lay down again- Poor Peter had only had about 5 hours sleep. The Volkswagen was finished at 4 in the afternoon-total bill $91 for all sorts of work including body work, new brake lining, new emergency brake, left rear signal and a tune up. Really highly reasonable. I finally got ahold of Eve Lee and invited her for [crossed out writing] Friday night. Lyle called-said he’d be by to pick me up at 10 o’clock for envelope addressing. Don called with a call back for the Johnsons’ Turkey commercial tomorrow at noon. Peter + I had dinner and several hundred drinks too many-called Drue-staggered off to bed in the dawn.
Peter came to wake me up about 11:30-Don Schwartz wanted me to go for a commercial-Johnson’s “Butterball Turkey”-at 2:45-Felt like hell but managed to pull myself together. washed + set hair etc. Peter drove me there in the Kaiser. We stopped + got some money first for cabs if necessary. The Kaiser made it to Western + Lexington + stopped dead. 10 blocks to walk-not bad. Saw Stuart Lancaster on the call + some other men. Peter’s category. What the hell that Chan Gross is doing if anything escapes me. The women had one smart line to read “Speak for yourself, John.” I did a rather funny bit with it but that was about all I could do. Barbara Slate gave me a ride back to the car. Peter managed to get it started again + drove me home. Then he washed up + drove out to St. John’s in Santa Monica to work. He called at 6;30 to say he’d made it + then called again to say he wouldn’t be finished shooting til 2:30 am. Don had called with a 10:30 appt. tomorrow so I decided not to wait up for Peter-I went out + got some yogurt + some beer + watched “The Invaders” and “Fugitive” just great!-with the famous ‘one-armed man’) And then went to bed. the $3,000 came today + we deposited it.
