Up at 5:30 – pottered about – shaved legs + underarms blah, blah – packed a few things like diary + knitting. Dick took me to airport at 7 – Arr. L.A. Internat’l 8:30. Got car + went in for hair cut from George. Then to Leon’s. Went by Benisch for coffee + out to Studio City. Saw Ed Hartman – Dear Ed + Virginia + Lionel (?) Thompson. Have nice part – shooting the 26th! Whee. Went to Aware restaurant – delicious. New Wardrobe Lady + all on order. Back to office then to Stephen Long street where I got two copies of early civil war novels autographed for Daddy. He just may like them. Stopped by a jewelers where Leon got something for Dick. Went to see Caro Jones – busy – went to see Tom Palmer at Goldwin + he just might get me a job – yes he might. Good to see him. Over to Desilu Gower + met Mike Rosen who casts for “Love American Style.” Then down the hall to Jim Merrick + Miracle of all miracles I got a job then + there (tiny) on “The Immortal” – Had to read two lines for the director but okay (I told him there wasn’t enough to screw up) Shoots Friday, the 12th. Delighted to have a new credit. Leon may have picked up a few other jobs en route for Buck Holland + Murray McLeod. My feet in new shoes killing me. Got Leon back to the office, gave Dorothy all particulars + went to airport. Turned in car – had supper + left. Home at 8:50. Dick there. Went to Cecil’s Palace + got filled in on the latest. Murray + Marty Lerit undersold another pool by $1250. I just don’t understand. I’m going to talk to Murray tomorrow. It was a “referral” from Highlander who got a pool cheap so they “had” to take it. Like the “Luck of the Netherlands chain letter – We’ll be referred right down the tubes. Leon’s gift to Dick a beautiful pen with a watch on it! Dick pleased about my job. Marlene Snyder a big success at office So that at least is good Oh dear Shirley out of town now for 4 days.
Crazy day in some ways – Up early – laundry, bed, diary etc. Happened to see in the paper about a movie casting at the Bonanza “Satan casts no Shadows” – [crossed out letter] “no fee involved” knew it had to be nutty but decided to go. Told Dick when he called. Wrote Dr. Bentley and paid Dr. Clarke for Pap test, Bathed + dressed + wigged + rode off into the overcast day. Bonanza “opera house” dark as a closet. Met Pat (Amaral) Peterson who’s working with the Producer. Has married + moved to Vegas. Used to be with Stalmaster so knew me. The movie a “sexploitation – 90% nudie” + non SAG but they may be doing others in the future – She invited me to the set next week. Told her I’d be intrigued. Heard a page for Jack Edelman + wondered if it was the same but couldn’t find out. Gambled a little + lost. Went to Dana McKay’s for jiffy-mailers + had a hell of a time finding the place. Finally did. Bought a few mailers all the wrong size but all they had + registered for CCA points. Bought “How Things Work” for Dick and the “Parade goes by” for me. Left with 2400 pts. Called Dick. Had a hamburger, picked up our cleaning + came home. Bill Tregoe in town at the Flamingo trying to help out Zsa-Zsa’s Show. Talked with him + will see him tomorrow. Several Tax statements in the mail. Read + napped. Eyes very tired. Dick fixed chicken livers for dinner + we watched TV. Have been thinking about Bill Wellborne + feel I ought to get him out of New York. I’ve left him $10,000 in my will but what good will it do him if he dies first and I’m afraid he will + soon without care. Can’t ask him here – just can’t. But there must be something to do. Will talk it over with Dick –
Morning began with Bill and a Mr. Duckett bringing Millie + picking up the chairs + table. Mr. Duckett like Daddy Grace. Bill told me about his con game. “Spend it like it was yours, honey” Had coffee + then went upstairs. Dick sleeping. I got to work on the papers etc. Depressing to pack Rita’s Mss. Not to know what was happening if anything ever with them Leon called + wanted me at his office at 1:00 for a “very important interview” with a test etc. Part in a film through Harvey Dermont. Blah Blah. I was near tears – near hell – in tears after I hung up. Too much to do + so damn tired. Millie ironed up my white striped dress. Rae O’dell called + that was a bright spot even though she can’t come tomorrow night. I bathed + washed my hair + got made up + it occurred to me that that part of it is the hardest part of acting with the most acting involved. Dick up by the time I left. Went to the bank + got $450 cash in case he gets the appliances. Then went with Leon to Desilu – Gower – Forget it! They wanted a 60 yr old dumpy swedish character woman. “But you’re too pretty. you’re too slim, you’re too young” etc. Finally told them I’d never been turned down so nicely in my life + they’d made my day. Saw Irving Lande after. Doing soap opera. Ran into Susan Brown on the lot and asked her to party – got her number + said I’d call. Got home. Montgomery Ward called + wanted the model numbers on the range + oven. Couldn’t find them so they said they’d send somebody out tomorrow! I was furious but helpless. Dick took Millie home – Dear Millie We’re almost finished. Timmy had suggested dinner tonight but we were too tired + there still was alot to do. A Bekins guy came + crated the paintings – Did a lovely job. We went over to the Iron Horse for dinner. I invited some more people and finished up on the papers. We went to bed around 11:30. Dick cleaned out the pool today.
Worked on cards – Got call for commercial – coca cola at Century City – at 5 – Bathed, dressed, made up etc. “demure prissy, New England D.A.R. – went + saw Margaret Wheeler, Ann Seymour + Jean Arnold. I + Margaret + nice English girl held over 2 of the 3” would get it. Felt they were both righter. Came home + called Dick (7 o’clock) Learned I’d called him a 2nd time last night. Went to Timmy’s for dinner. Nice Evening though Timmy bleak about Christmas. Coca Cola working Thurs. or Fri. So – supposedly is “Anderson + Co.” – ???
Busy day. Up at 7:30 – Bathed + puttered. Went to Leon’s at 10. Picked up my resumes across the street. Nice job. Took Leon to barbers + bought some stationary while I waited + wrote in diary. We went out to CBS TV city + saw Virginia + her new Assistant Peggy
Fleming (Flynn?) Then met Mr. Oronato of Wild Wild West + saw Pam Polifroni after all these years. She is very well. Ran into Ed Hartman’s secty. Went to UI for lunch. Saw Sidney Portiers in the commisary. Also Tom Williams whom I didn’t bother today. Saw Lane outside + am beginning to feel a little awkward about him. We went [crossed out word] over to see a really lovely woman named Jean Reilly next. Has a new series coming out – own project “Benjy + Me.” Liked her immensely. Saw David Victor who remembered me. (said Hello Patience out on sidewalk) Went up to Phil Roger’s office + My God Leon was right about the little blonde secty (about 25) having an ulcer. She was as shaken as I was. Went to the floor + met Wm Batkiner’s secty Ruth with whom Leon left a picture. Left Leon at 3. Went to see the dogs who were pleased to see me but didn’t cry when I left. They’re doing beautifully + seem very happy. Next stop Bekins – got more boxes + some packing papers. Cashed a check at Safeway + bought some makeup + contac at Super S. Home Spoke with Mary. Called Leon’s office twice at his request but he wasn’t in. Dressed + went to Timmy’s. Had 2 drinks + then we drove out to the Palisades – near Ted’s Grill to see Sharon’s show at the “New Hope Inn.” Nice dining room. Good food. attractive atmosphere but the show was a disappointment. Although the tale is lovely – Jerry Devine + Sharon both very inferior. Had a brandy at Timmy’s + came home. Had fun with Timmy. Bed about midnight. 7:30 wakeup.
Up early for steam appt. Bess is retiring + Friday will be my last time. She’s going to live out on the desert with her former husband! I went to the bank + deposited $520 from N.Y. acct + Mary’s Las Vegas check. Picked up my prescription from Doug. Went to the Alpha Beta and bought a stiff scrub brush cleaned the front porch. Paid the rent. Knitted. Went with Leon to National General + was told by Harvey Clermont I had the part of a nurse receptionist. About 3 speeches. I was bitterly disappointed + Leon knew as I got quite tearful in the car. Why the hell nurses all the time? We went over to MGM + saw Leonard Murphy. We got held up + were late. I dropped Leon at the office + went tearing out to the Palisades. By some miracle I made it in time. Blurted out all about my reactions to being constantly cast as a nurse, teacher, welfare worker etc. Asked him if that was his idea of me + he said no. Then I told him about Dick’s call last night + his wife having found the letter. He asked how I felt + I said I was sorry but I couldn’t feel awful about it. Suddenly remembered the story of Grampie + told him – “if you’re going to be wicked, be wicked but don’t be thilly.” Said I thought it was a little thilly to keep the letter. Told him about writing Mrs. Parr + not the RR letter which is a veritable albatross. He asked me [crossed out letters] what the various members of my family thought about my “mind” + I suddenly realized for the first time I don’t think one of them has ever given it a thought except for Mother + Daddy. My mind just isn’t in it. Bob went on to say that that seemed odd when I had “a good mind + reasoned clearly” I said do you think I reason clearly? ” + he said yes + I blushed + said thank you. Whereupon he said I didn’t mean that as a compliment, it’s [crossed out letters] a fact. And I said well that’s even better, isn’t it. And we both laughed but I felt just great. Went with Doug to his + Joan’s house for a drink and I loved it + them. A jolly lady named Marge Ran there. Asked them all to come see Mary’s paintings. Home about 9:30. I read + knitted
Somewhat better day although no reason for it. I guess the panic has subsided a little. Spoke with Mary C. over the phone. Still haven’t bought her birthday present. Went to Leon’s office at 2 o’clock. Got a ticket en route for speeding. The policeman thanked me for my “courtesy” + wished me luck in my career!! Went with Leon to “Scream Gems.” Saw Lou Deuser + had a nice chat in the ante room. Met Ernest Losso – casting director for “Bewitched” + Here come the Brides.” Liked him. Ran into dear Wes Kenney. Next to Columbia. Saw Fred Breskin – nice secty’ – Barbara Williams (?) who complemented me on Time of the [crossed out letters] Cuckoo. Saw the name Dave Dwarski on a door + wondered if it’s the same David from “Take Her She’s Mine” Took a nap because I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Went to Timmy’s with Mary and Humbug Good dinner. On the way I thought of Annie Sullivan apt. + got all excited. When we got back we had some beer + I called Annie – got her about one. The place alas is sublet. Was sorry I’d talked so much about it. Went to bed around 2 am. Mary has been packing things + moving them out to Jim’s all day. Her mother called in the morning and told her to come home for a little which she’d planned to do.
Up at 7:30 – Took Winnie to Pat Walker’s. Picked up Bess + gave her a ride to work. Went over to Mrs. [crossed out word] Wallick’s and she pinned up the 3 dresses. The blue without sleeves is going to look marvelous. Came home + straightened out apartment + made Busy’s bed. Talked with Rae. Do like her. Winnie back at 11. Helped me with Newcomb’s bed. Leon called at 11:00 – appt not until 2:30. Winnie went to Carl’s to get me some stockings. She also suggested I call the cleaners to see if my yellow dress was back + Lo + Behold it was, Called Mary. Went to Leons at 2 o’clock. We drove out to Culver City to National General Studio (in the Paramount lot.) Everyone just getting settled – first day. Mark Robson’s sect’y Cecile? very nice. Saw him fairly briefly after an hour wait. He felt I was very right for the part of Meg – “30-33.” (I told him I was 33 having seen the cast breakdown) I met Harvey Clermont. Leon felt the appt. went well – I couldn’t tell. My mind was on Newcomb + Busy arriving + waiting. Leon stopped at Ma Gordons for lunch + then I took him back to the office + came home about 5:00. Busy + Newcomb had arrived 5 minutes before. After long waits + delays. We went out to Ports of Call for dinner with Mary + Abby. Very pleasant place + nice evening. I had steamed clams. Winnie bought birthday gifts for Newcomb. Home by 10:30 and all in bed soon after. Newcomb ran into Frank + Marilyn Cox from Tulsa at Ports of Call.
Pretty busy day. Up at 7 – Diary. Called Chuck Neighbors and I’m free with “The Lion is …”. He’s been in a custody battle which is why he hasn’t written. Called Fred Botterman who said to write him and he’d answer questions by mail. Was very friendly. Woke Winnie at 8:00 and we began with Sego. She went off by bus at 8:30. I proof read four of Rita’s stories already typed + one new one which Celeste sent. Rae here at 9:30 and we talked a bit. Gave her our film script again. Bathed + washed hair took off in orange wool dress for Leons. We drove out to Studio City and I burnt a hole in my dress. Damn Damn Damn. Met Pat Harris + felt it went very well. Went into Studio City + waited in car while Leon went to see Virginia Martindale. Ed Hartman came by the car + told me I looked very good in the rushes and he hoped to use me again in the other show with “a better part hopefully”. I told him I’d loved that part + loved the people. Fortuitous meeting and I felt great. Virginia joined us for lunch + she too said lovely things “One take Patience” – also that Bill Demarest had asked for me to play the Librarian with him in an up coming episode. We ate at the Iron horse. Came back to Leon’s office at 2:00 + then home. Called Henry Jones – may go out there to the beach next Monday or Tuesday. Told him Ed Hartman had been asking for him. Went over script set up with Rae. Took dress to re-weaver. Called Isabell. Wrote note for Harvey about rent and started letter to Fred Botterman. Harvey sold Jim’s packard for him. Winnie + I went to the Farmers Market and I bought 3 dresses. All of which need shortening but still am pleased with them. Back via Safeway. Shopped for dinner. Home at 7:20 Mary P + Winnie helped get dinner ready. I started fire. Had important message from Leon. Called + I have an appointment tomorrow for a very good part in a big new feature film. Should be chic, 32, friend of the star part. Don’t know what I’ll wear but decided on gray suit. Made early appt with Ivey Wallich for alterations + called Bess to cancel. Jane over at 8:30. Had a couple of drinks + then good dinner. Izzy called just as I was burning the meat. Hectic as hell. Jim over at 10:00 + he + Mary took Jane home + Winnie with them. I sent $500.00 to Jimmy’s campaign + 30 to the Fresh Air Fund + then started looking up name of music publisher for Fred Botterman – hopeless so far – Winnie home at midnight – Bed right after for me.
A grayish day but beautifully clear after the rain. The city emerging in [crossed out letters] layers back to the hills. I finally wrote my addition to the round robin letter Started one so snide I was ashamed + began again Got in all the news without one word of opinion or comment. I wrote a long letter to Sue Glick in answer to her very dear letter. I called the telephone company to have the bills sent to me + evidently have to go through some formalities. Was talking to Timmy when Leon’s office interrupted with an emergency call. I thought it might have something to do with Peter but it turned out Leon wanted me to go on an interview at 3:30. Called Benito to say I’d have to leave rehearsal. Went to the Argyle at 2:00 – we rehearsed until a little after 3:00 + I took off. Leon took me to meet Simon Taub – a very bright + interesting lawyer. The mind was palpable (right word.) then we went on a round of Leon’s errands + back to his office. He’s being interviewed by TV guide. It was too late to return to rehearsal so I stopped in to see Timmy who’s feeling “out of step with people – Two paces behind – ” unidentified.” Quite touching. Nice brief visit. Home – Mary had fixed a lovely dinner. Rita unable to eat. Feeling nauseous. Bad day. I had to go back to rehearsal at 8 – things went a touch more smoothly – at least we ran a whole section which allowed us to get some feel of things. Joe decided I was two similar in the 2nd + 3rd scenes + he’s right. We’ll work on that tomorrow. The subject of the theatre came up. I abstained but the debate was heated. Joe may let Sandra Marshal go [crossed out letter]. She’s not good. God knows, but I don’t like to be in on any of it. And so much time has already been spent on her. Magda + I talked quite a bit. Got home around 12:30 or 1 – was wound up. Took some beer upstairs + sat + talked with Paul til almost 3:30. Foolish as I had to get up at 7:00 But the conversation was fascinating if in spots disturbing. Paul has gotten so involved with Rita in his mind that it’s really a bit much even for me. I should think it would drive Mary nuts. And the oddest part is he has no idea at all of what Rita’s really like – Just one facet of an extremely multi faceted person. It’s funny and irritating and touching and macabre and – at the moment – very helpful – oh Dear!
Up at 5:15 – cancelled other call. bathed, washed hair left a note for Angus + Rita with directions on how to get to U.C.L.A. Had trouble getting Humbug inside left the house at 6:50. Got to the studio 10 minutes late + they’d just called the house. Make up man – Roy Stork – Wardrobe woman Gwyn. Oscar Beregi – a Hungarian actor playing the Producer. Very funny. The director, Richard Bare – no contact there. A. D. Tom Audré. We were finished shooting at 9 o’clock. The second part shoots the end of the week and I picked up my script at casting. In three scenes but nothing worth being called a part. Home at 9:30. Called Iva Wallich + made appt. for 2 o’clock. Went to [crossed out letters] Milt Hammerman’s at 11:00. Nice to see him again. For a Lark commercial. Don’t know how it went. One guy I liked – the other a blank. Went over to Leon’s and picked up our loaf of bread. Saw Paul Wilkins + Dorothy but not Leon. Came back – missed Angus who’s coming back on Sunday before taking off for Europe. Rita feeling very well. She had a letter from Celeste bur didn’t read it right away. I went to Mrs. Wallich’s with 10 items to be shortened. Nice woman. Next I went to the Broadway and bought some nice new underwear – bras. 2 girdles, panties (including 2 bikinis!) Slips. Came home to show Rita Mary + Paul who was a little amused. Rita told me Celeste wanted to come for the weekend but that she – Rita – was going to call her and say no. We talked a bit about it but Rita was adamant – Said it would be too hard on her Mother. She also talked about after she left here and then looked close to tears and said “I won’t have anyone to talk to” – Dear dear Rita. She has meant so very much to me these 6 weeks. I can’t bear the thought of her leaving. I paid Timmy’s parking ticket for the other night ordered some more checks. Rita ate a little dinner with Mary + Paul and I gave Mary some more food for her. Rehearsal at 7:30. I took a pot of coffee. It went smoothly. We did Act I Sc. I. I gave the boy playing Vito a ride home. (Del?) Home before 12 – Had a beer upstairs with Mary + Paul – then bed. Celeste called Rita tonight and Rita told her not to come.
Had 3 wakeups – 6 – 6:30 + then 7 – finally made it, bathed, filled a thermos with coffee after a cup here + drove out to the Palisades. A nice sunny warm looking day + with only 4 hours sleep I still felt pretty good. As I came up Chatauqua I began thinking how lucky I am to have Iverson and Doug Forde and enough money and my health and my wits and Leon too with a whole new outlook on my career. I ran into Bob Iverson downstairs + told him I’d just been thinking how grateful I was to him and he said “you must be feeling better” – which I laughed at + he immediately said “I didn’t mean to sound cynical, but you do don’t you.” We spent most of the precious hour reading my letters – first [crossed out letter] Daddy’s then [crossed out word] the copy of mine to Colby which he thought was very good + direct. Then Colbys two answers which he found pretty loaded + which he pointed out never answered my question. Nor after 6 pages did they in any way indicate that Colby had budged an inch from her original stand. I showed him Mary’s letter which was written for that great big Publisher in the sky + finally Newcomb’s which he said was a very nice letter – “supportive.” I told him I wouldn’t mind if Colby wasn’t supportive if she would only be answerable. Told him I planned to get Peter to write her. He told me it was helpful to him to see the letters. He seemed to feel as I’ve told him that both Colby + Mary could be pretty difficult to deal with. Next appt. not til next Thursday which seems a long way away. He said I seemed to be doing very well + I said “Thanks to you” + he said that was good to hear. Had coffee + metracal + went to see Doug at 10. Had a pelvic (“Good Morning”) + then coffee + a long talk about Rita. – I am in good shape physically, incidentally. Doug took Rita’s letter and is going to line up some people to see Rita when she gets back. Came home + washed hair. Had a 2:00 appt at M.P.O – request by Bob Palmer for a Kodak commercial. I told him I was with Leon now. Met some nice girls there: Lia Waggoner esp. Saw Mary Ann Gibson. brief dumb interview went to unemployment + met a nice cameraman named Myron Schnieder. Reinstated myself. Came home + took a nap. Forwarded Peter’s mail + wrote Rita + forwarded a letter to her. Leon called + I went to dinner with him noodle [crossed out word] soup, cold cuts, a couple of drinks and a little canoodling. I’m not very good at fending but have decided a blend of laughing, intensely serious talk + too much smoking plus a few tears when called for will keep the situation comfortable.
Up at 6 – Peter off at 6:30 – I went at 7:15 – Got out to 910 by 7:50 + went right in. Cried alot + said I was at the end of my rope. I didn’t actually but said I was depressed + terribly unhappy. Bob asked me about Peter’s attitudes towards women + when I didn’t understand he said I kept feeling that I was causal in our current relationship but that just possibly Peter’s behavior which he called “punishment” is a symbolic punishing of women. Not me particularly. I had a little trouble accepting this. I told Bob it seemed too marvelously easy a wayout + Bob said that it was odd that both Peter + I for very different reasons couldn’t see it this way. He said our current situation was extremely malignant + damaging to my self esteem. Oh God – don’t I know it. Bob wants to see Peter + me together [crossed out word] next Monday at the same time + warned that there might be real strife but anything’s better than the current set up. Came home still crying. Call for Peter from Don Schwartz – appt. at 2:30. Got him at Bache. Later developed the call was for me – mistake at the service. Peter home for clothes – oh hell. Went out to De Patie Freling in the Valley at 2:30 – Saw Larry Sands there – from Detroit. He’s a Vice President. Whee. Nice chat. Saw Alice Backus, Olive Dunbar, Ann Stowell + Irene Tedrow. Was very wrong for the part. Nice visit with Irene. Letters from Daddy, Colby, Newcomb + Rita who wants [crossed out letters] to visit 1st 2 wks in December. I said great in an answer + looked up an address for her. I called Colby + chatted for about 25 minutes with her. Paid the phone bill – $85.00 [crossed out letters] Man came to the door whom Mitzi had bitten + said he was going to have the police come take her away. I didn’t see him but I guess that’s that. Went out to Mary’s – got there at six. Letter from Allen had arrived today and it was pretty awful I thought and I thought she should make a stand. We played bridge with Katie + Dolores. Gee – I like them. Nice women. Home at eleven – Peter home a half hour later – had gotten bored in class – gone to a girlie movie! We looked over plate blocks – bed at 1 –
Carl Stokes won + Hatcher – two negro mayers [mayors] and old Mother Backlash in Boston lost so that’s a step forward. Was up early – went to pick up Bess + take her to work. Had to cancel my appt. Went out to Columbia Ranch at 10:30 – Katherine McLeod + I (I thought) were the only call backs. They liked my reading + I felt very good about it – did it once with English accent + once without. Katherine unhappy about hers – I thought I had the job. Was home about noon + took a long nap. Paul + Mary went to the Post Office + bought me a couple of sheets of the New American Artists issue. Also picked up a registered pkge for me which had the twins lockets. They’re lovely. Katherine McLeod called to say that her agency (Pacific Artists) had gotten the Dupont commercials (she didn’t) They have re-titled the one we were up for “The Gym Teacher” and they got a nice tall gangly girl to do it. I wrote yesterday that even if they used somebody else I’d have contributed something. Well, I did but it does hurt. And it makes me a little mad. Peter was properly sympathetic when he came home and that was nice for a change. He had a bad day too – His stock is down to 14 1/8 after hitting 17 5/8 two days ago + although he’d had a sell order in at 15 3/8 they went right through it. Maybe it’ll pick up again tomorrow or soon. I hope so. We had a good dinner. I finished my sweater and it’s about 3 sizes too big which is pretty depressing. I went upstairs to talk briefly with Mary Parker – I’m going to hire her tomorrow to help me clean the house from top to bottom. It’s beginning to drive me buggy and I cannot do it all myself. She’s getting up very late these days because of Paul’s rehearsals but from 2 – 7 will be 5 hours + I can get a good morning start. We went to bed a little after 11 o’clock. Jill Chandler called – she + Lew Brown got married this summer. Mary called + was depressed but when I tried to call her back I couldn’t get her.
At this writing still don’t know who won the Cleveland + Gary, Indiana elections for Mayor but Louise Day Hicks lost in Boston – Whee!
Up about 7 – no market because of N.Y. elections. Wrote Colby + sent her a check for $100 to cover the Indian Head coins + again told her to lay off the little digs. – Why she throws them in I don’t know + I hate writing all these peevish [crossed out word] letters but there it is. Went to unemployment + thence to Ohrbachs where I got money back on the shoes then Pat Walker’s + home. Dressed, washed hair + went out to the Columbia Ranch in the Valley for a Dupont-Lucite commercial. Long wait but pleasant. Saw Holly Harris, Katherine McLeod, Chaim Wynaut, Don Haggerty, Steve Bell over a period of 2 hours. Went in about a Greyhound commercial while was there so did everyone else – quite funny. Finally in on the Dupont – 8 men there dreary commercial. Very Dike-y. Used the word myself after two [crossed out letter] pretty grim readings. They agreed. I said they’d offend alot of people if that’s what they wanted. They agreed. I had the idea to try it like Joyce Grenfell’s games mistress all girlish gangley enthusiasm and it worked like a charm. They were delighted + I have a call back tomorrow. I left feeling I’d contributed something + was really very pleased with myself Even if they use somebody else for my idea I’ve spared the American public another of those ghastly put-down commercials. Blah Blah Blah. Came home + went + saw Mary + Paul. Called Lennie Dunne about the Farmington meeting + said I’d be there. Went + bought some vodka + fresca to take to Timmy’s – Peter home about 7:15 – went to Timmy’s – Shephard’s pie. Ate too much. Watched Television – Daktari, Invaders, N.Y.P.D. and Sid Caesar show. Election results not yet in – went home + to bed [crossed out letters] immediately – almost midnight.
