Call at 5 – The coffee a godsend. Drove to the studio in pouring rain + pitch dark. Shared a trailer with Adele Claire My part infinitesimal but she had no lines at all. Wore blue chiffon. Bob Christianson the wardrobe man. Danced with John Howard + John Forsythe Stepped on all feet. Leon came over with Bob Kennealy. Leon + I went back to the Roosevelt, I packed + checked out. We went to his office + had lunch at Frascatti’s. Then I did a few cards in his office, changed reservation to 9:30 called Dick. Left at 4:45 for Mary’s. Got there about 5:45. Patsy + Abby there looking very tall + dear. Mary in great shape + Les too. Had a good, good time Lamb dinner. Left for airport at 8:20 + got lost. Then couldn’t find Avis return. Made the plane with only minutes to spare. Dick met me with the news Annie had had a fire in her house + is coming tomorrow night. Good God!
Millie came at 9. I mailed letter + journal to Anne and a package of detective stories to Carl + Sue. Had lunch at the Cock’n’Bull with Neil Burkhardt. Gee he’s a nice guy and I’m really so delighted that he’s handling Rita’s writing. I think she would have liked him so much. After I went to visit Henry and we played a rather hurried game of anagrams – My first I don’t have the knack. Went shopping, took Millie home and came back + took a nap before getting things ready for Mary + Les, David + Debbie, Sue + Mike and the twins and a friend. Had the most enormous steak. Told Mary about Newcomb and Anne and she was of course distressed. Told her I was going to Vegas next weekend and she asked if she could come too. I said of course + she was actually able to get a reservation. It was a pleasant evening although Abby [crossed out letter] was a little left out by Patsy and her friend. Have so many things I’ve been meaning to do and just don’t seem to get around to them. Tired and bed fairly early.
Special delivery card from Nicky Korda asking if he could stay at the house tomorrow night thru tues.
Took Mitzi to the vets to be clipped. am leaving her overnight. Went shopping. Went to Contour at one o’clock. Came home + got dinner all set up then went out at 4 to Pelham Avenue. I put all our family addresses in the twins’ books. Mary was fine and it was a nice party. Stephanie + Jessica Monash there + Debbie’s little sister Liz and about 8 other children. I helped but didn’t tell the ghost stories the twins wanted as I couldn’t remember them. Was home by 7:30 – We had dinner at 8 and then played gin rummy.
Woke with ghastly hangover + brooded about everyone who didn’t come to the party. House a mess but not as bad as it might have been. Peter upstairs with Mary + Paul having beer in a coffee cup when I arrived up there-Discussion of party-Peter described a small group of [___] leaving guests as “tired and scared” and for some reason or other that struck me as terribly funny. Mary called to say thank you-the only one who did. She came over later with the twins + Margaret who helped clean up a little. They went on to Olvera St. Bruce’s two sons Terry + Mario came in + Peter showed them the house + fed them coke, fresca + potato chips-I gave them a copy of my book. Bruce in for a drink. We left at 7 to have dinner at Timmy’s. Pleasant dinner + time-NO TV!! Until 10:30. Watched ‘Trail of the Lonesome Pine”-Sylvia Sidney, Beulah Bondy, Fred MacMurray + Henry Fonda. Peter + Timmy laughed + I cried like a baby. Came home + played poker with Mary + Paul on our new green felt. Bed about 3:30 and then to compound the idiocy I read a mystery.
Went shopping with Liza-found marvelous stores but nothing I wanted except a mohair knit coat. Liza got two dresses and a slack suit for the party on Sunday. She was off to her 3rd call back for the Cole Porter Revue-the dancing audition. I wrote Annie a letter saying we were coming [crossed out writing] up in 2 weeks + I wrote Ed Mullen saying I couldn’t invest in “Gus.” James had called just before I left with Liza so didn’t really speak with him. When I got home Lyle called-long talk-he’d been back to New York for 10 days. Ida Mazzanti called to ask us down to La Jolla for June’s birthday party-Talk about coincidences-we told her we were coming tomorrow night. Abby had called while I was out + talked to Peter for 45 minutes + he’d said I would call her back-so did but made it brief. Mary called-extremely depressed-talked for a long time-very pathetic + not at all hectic. Still though, not really utterly reasonable. Has no plans for the 4th. If only these holiday dates didn’t mean so much to her. She called back again a little later. I went shopping for a pair of shoes. We went-Paul, Mary, Peter + I to Timmy’s for dinner. Peter not feeling well + I suggested he limit himself to 3 drinks. What idiocy because of course he didn’t + our evening though nobody else’s ended up in fighting or long pointless arguing + discussion which is the same thing.
Somehow by the Grace of God we made it-woke up 2 1/2 hours late to put the turkey in but Peter wrapped it in foil which cut 3 hrs off the roasting time. Called Mandeville to say we were a little behind + not to come until 3 or a bit after. Called Hilary + Jim-they’d loved the Christmas cards-nice chat. Called Mother + Daddy who sent their love to Mary + Margaret. I promised to write this week. Spoke with Mary who told me she’s going to see Allen tomorrow about visiting the children. I said I thought it might be a bit of a mistake but she wouldn’t hear of it + I told her it was none of my business anyway. Said I’d call her later. We got the table set up and when the Enelows arrived we all went to work with the strings. Great success. Everyone happy with their gifts. I got Spaniard in the Works by John Lennon. Brandy for Allen and shaving lotion for David flashlight for Jim. Somehow got all the food on the table + everyone had plenty. Sue an enormous help. Cleared the table and later after the pinata swept + vacuumed. So grateful All Margie’s gifts a success. David recited poetry-really remarkable how much he knows and all of it good. Sue put on a show + Allen talked throughout which led to tears-my sympathies with Sue. Gave them the turkey, a pie, the remaining brandy that Allen had brought plus the new bottle + Leon’s bread to take home. David took the twins home + then Allen Jim + Sue went to the theatre together. I called Mary + let Margie speak to her. She said all the right things + I had tears in my eyes when she’d finished. We-Peter, Margie + I went to a drive-in + saw Mad Mad Mad Mad World again and How to Murder Your Wife. Stayed til the place closed at two am. Came home + put Margie to bed with my nightgown the kitchen pretty much cleaned up + the ice box filled with food.
Alarm at 8:15-twins awake but silent as mice til I went off. Breakfast downstairs. They dressed up in the [crossed out writing] cellar + Peter took pictures of them on the front porch. Margie called to find out how Peter had liked her oil painting. Twins + I went boating on Westlake-really alot of fun-boats cost about a dollar an hour per person go 4 miles an hour and anyone can run them. Next stop miniature golf out in Santa Monica. All quite close and that was fun. Home about 1 o’clock. James back from New London. Asked him how Mother + Daddy were + he said “Still alive + kicking.” I could have shaken him but suppose it’s hardly his fault. He brought everyone presents. I had to leave before I got mine but will collect it Monday. Back by way of Price St. Insurance bill-notice of Nelson Algrens new book and a letter from Harold Stern who’s in Europe-whee-He’ll be back on the 15th in N.Y. and then out here on the 22nd so I’ll miss him both ways. He sent me a published copy of the Franchot Tone interview with my name printed Patience CLEVELAN and he sent me the releases of the Fonteen-Nureyev story which upset me so much I cried. Awful captions + headings. Undoing the entire story “the way ballet stars behave at taping”=”nothing graceful about the taping” etc. The only thing I hope to get out of this some recognition + to have an obviously illiterate baboon mess up my stories like that is heartbreaking. Came home + felt lousy-sort of grippe or something. I read the Venetian Affair-just loved it. Slept. Spoke with Timmy, was supposed to go to screening of Leon Lance’s film but felt too sick. Peter worked late anyway-didn’t come home til about 10:30-had seen some of the film. Saw John Lodge who avoided him. I sent stamps to Colby (Harold had sent me some too) Paid insurance, paid Hayes, wrote Ev. Britz + sent new leases and wrote Aunt Hope + Dru. Peter + I sate + drank beer + then the cointreau as there was nothing else around. I decided to stay up until I could talk to Allen as he was leaving at 11 in the morning. Hit the phone-Miss Leland-Mrs. Rice-Annie Warner + Hilary.
