Up early – we left the house at 9 – went to the office + I got film etc. Took off about 10:15. Long + monotonous drive up to the test site turn off – stopped to “rest” at Indian Springs gas station. Passed Ash meadows – Two cat houses pointed out. Stopped in Beatty for lunch at the Exchange Club. Such a venerable structure that it’s evacuated whenever there’s a test shot. A hospital there but no Doctor. Have never seen clearer air. Spilt my bloody Mary on Daddy’s hat. Drove on the Reno Road to Scotty’s castle turn off. Road began to be fascinating winding down through bare rocks. desolate, desolate Scotty’s castle incredible – a real castle. Tour guide pretty awful but the castle + its furnishings intriguing. Also the relationship between Scotty – Mr. A.M. Johnson whose money did it all + Mrs. Johnson – I got a feeling that Mrs. Johnson didn’t dig the desert scene. Had coffee + bought books + postcards. Alot of walking but Daddy did well + managed the stairs. A woman in a wheelchair [crossed out letter] made his advantages apparent. Left Scotty’s castle about 2:30 + went on to Furnace creek – this through Death Valley. What ghastly terrain. I drove the last part as Dick was falling asleep. We arrived at the Furnace Creek Ranch about four + Dick took us up the hill + winding road to the Inn. Changed our rooms to ones on the lobby + dining room floor. A gorgeous place but situated on a hill side so everything up + down + steps. I went in swimming – water warm but air cold Daddy + Dick came down + sat pool side. Climbed back up + repaired to our rooms. Made love + napped + then met for dinner which was excellent. Daddy off to bed about 8 thirty + Dick + I went down for a couple of night caps in the “oasis room” bar. Wall of colemanite specimens – fascinating crystal forms. So glad we came, but it’s the sort of place to stay a week + have pots of money. Chatted briefly with a solitary + crippled man who seemed much alone Bed about 10 + slept like rocks.
